The Closed Door is a Main Quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the The Closed Door story mission.
Requirement: Interacted with the door to Temple of Light during Main Quest Find Princess Zelda.
Reward: 3 Abilities “Ultrahand”, “Fuse”, “Ascend” and Energy Cell to power Zonai Devices
Quest Info: When you tried to open the door to the Temple of Time, Rauru appeared and said he was the original owner of your new arm. He also said you need to revitalize the arm so the power of its touch will open the door. To do that, visit the island’s shrines. A green light spirals above each of them.
Objectives:
- Mark the 3 Shrines
- Finish Ukouh Shrine
- Finish In-Isa Shrine
- Finish Gutanbac Shrine
- Open the Closed Door
Starting Location: The Closed Door
This main quest automatically starts after interacting with the door of the Temple of Time in Great Sky Island, during Main Quest Find Princess Zelda.
Mark the 3 Shrines
Raura tells you to mark the 3 Shrines with your Scope to find them more easily. From the Closed Door turn around and pull out your Scope by pressing the Right Stick. Then place pins by pressing . Below all Shrines are shown with their exact map location. Simply copy the map markers from below, open your Map with and press to put markers.
Shrine Location #1:
Shrine Location #2 (hidden behind a floating rock, you can’t actually see it with the Scope from here, so just put a waypoint on your map as shown in the map below):
Shrine Location #3:
Reach Ukouh Shrine
This is where you must go:
Drop down the side of the Temple of Time, then simply climb up the mountain to reach the shrine on top. Go inside.
Ukouh Shrine – Solution
Upon entering the Shrine you get the Ultrahand ability to move and combine objects.
- Use the Ultrahand ability with > > – then press to pick up the stone slab, rotate it with + / / / . Place it over the missing floor to create a bridge with it. The first time you do it the controls can take some time to get used to.
- On the second gap you will find two stone slabs. You must place them on the floor and using Ultrahand ability connect them together by pressing when they are close together. This turns the two slabs into one longer slab, now place it over the missing floor to create a long bridge with it and walk across.
- In the third section will be a long rail, to the left of it is a big wooden board and metal hooks. There are also small metal balls but those can be ignored. Using Ultrahand ability connect one of the “S” shaped metal hooks to the wooden board (press to connect them). Then put the hook on the long metal rail and QUICKLY jump on it with . The metal rail has a slight decline which will make the hook-platform slide down to the other side.
- After the third section you reach the end of the shrine. Simply interact with the green glowing shrine piece. This gives you a Light of Blessing and restores power to your arm.
Reach In-Isa Shrine
This is our next shrine destination, mark it on the map:
How to get there:
South-east from the first shrine is a rail with platforms and hooks. Use Ultrahand ability to combine these into a platform with a hook, place the hook on the rail, quickly climb on and let it slide down. Just like you did at the end of the first shrine.
In the area where you land is a broken bridge. You must combine 3 wooden logs into one very long log. Then place it over the broken bridge. This creates your own bridge of wooden logs, you can walk over the logs to cross the broken bridge.
Now keep heading south. Along the path you may encounter more Constructs that explain bow-hunting and cooking. Doing this isn’t mandatory, but you can use bows with and hunt animals to get their meat. Cooking is incredibly useful to turn food into meals that restore more health. When you find a cooking pot, open your inventory , press and “Hold” on ingredients, to return to game, to drop them into the pot. Wait a moment to finish cooking. This isn’t mandatory for now but it’s important to understand how it works.
Anyway, for now keep heading south until you reach a waterfall. Drop down this waterfall.
After dropping down the waterfall, go on land to the left of the river. There you find wooden logs and sails. Using Ultrahand, combine 2 logs and put a sail on them to make a boat.
Carefully place the boat on the shore. DON’T put it in the water yet! The wind will make it sail away really fast. Put it on the shore (on land) and walk against the logs to push them into the water slowly. QUICKLY jump onto the boat before the wind pushes it away. If you’re too slow you need to build another boat.
Now simply let the wind do the rest, it will push you on the boat across the lake.
On the island go up the stairs to find the shrine.
In-Isa Shrine – Solution
Upon entering the Shrine you get the Fuses ability to combine weapons with other objects.
- Pick up the “Rusty Claymore” sword straight ahead from where you enter the shrine. Select it from your weapons list (hold ). Now press + to select “Fuses” ability. Walk up to the Boulders and press to combine the boulder with the sword. With the newly combined Boulder Hammer press to attack the stone blockade, thus opening the path ahead.
- In the next section, take a right turn and pick up the Bow and Fire Fruits from the tree. Now hold + to pull out your bow and open the item select, then to select the Fire Fruit. This combines the Fire Fruit with your Arrow to make a Burning Arrow. Shoot it at the vines on the wall, where a platform with a chest is. This will drop the chest, open it for a Small Key, then use the key on the door on the main path. Bonus: you can destroy the left pillar in front of the door with your Boulder Hammer to get a bonus chest.
- The next room has a pretty tough enemy using ranged and melee attacks, and he has much more health than previous enemies. The easiest method is to shoot him with arrows from a safe distance. You can also run in and land 1 strike with your Boulder Hammer, then quickly run away and wait for another opening. There are a bunch of weapons and combinable items in this arena should you need them. Afterward, smash the stone blockade with your Boulder Hammer like you did in the first room.
- Now simply follow the path upstairs to the green Shrine. Interact with it to restore some power to your hand and get a Light of Blessing.
Upon exiting you get the Energy Cell, which can power Zonai devices. Steward Construct will point you in the direction of a cave, we will go through there next.
Reach Gutanbac Shrine
This is where the third Shrine is:
How to get there:
Enter the Cave south-east of the second Shrine (“Pondside Cave”). Go through this cave.
Along the way you can break some rocks with a Boulder Hammer to get resources like Flint and Rock Salt. There’s also a glowing toad-like enemy called “Bubbul” in the cave, it will drop a Bubbul Gem that will be useful later (but not mandatory for story). There’s also a chest near the end of the cave containing Archaic Tunic that you can equip as upper body armor.
After exiting the cave you will find Rauru and more Constructs that explain how powering Zonai devices works. There are a bunch of green fans/turbines and logs scattered on the floor. Using Ultrahand, stick one of the green Zonai fans on the end of a log. Then place the log in the water, climb on, hit the fan with a melee attack to power it on.
This will create a fan-powered “boat” that pushes you across the lake.
After arriving on the other side you must head upstairs until you reach another cave called “Mining Cave”. We must go through here.
It’s really dark but you can make light by hitting the Brightbloom Seeds with melee attacks. You can also collect these seeds, drop them where the cave gets too dark to see, then attack the seed to illuminate the area. Throughout the cave you can destroy rocks to get Zonaite. a material that can be traded at Forges for Zonai Charges (to power Zonai devices) & Crystallized Charges.
Near the end of the cave you will find a Forge where you can trade some Zonaite. It’s good to always have a few Zonai Charges and Crystallized Charges in reserve, so get a few from him now.
Then talk to the Mining Construct at the very end of the cave where you see light at the end of the tunnel. He gives you 3 x Zonai Fans in capsules.
Open the inventory > Zonai Devices > Fan > > Take out devices. Stick it to the back of a minecart. Then place the Minecart on the rails, climb in, hit the fan to power it. This will push the cart up the rails.
Where you arrive is the first Device Dispenser in the game. Talk to the Construct there and he’ll let you use it. From Inventory > Materials, select a Soldier Construct Horn > Hold > to return to game > to drop it into the chalice at the dispenser. Then it spits out 1 Zonai Device per Zonai part you put in. I.e. putting in 3 Zonai Parts at once will spit out 3 RANDOM Zonai Devices in Capsules. It’s good to always have a few of these in reserve to craft things on the go. This Dispenser only gives Fans, Flame Emitters, Portable Pots.
Also on this island you find a Forge Construct that gives you a miniquest. Talk to him, he tells you he must get back to his friend.
Combine another Fan with a Cart, use Ultrahand to lift the quest giver into the cart. Place it on the rails next to the quest giver, climb in, hit the fan. This will push you and the quest giver to the other side. Take him out with Ultrahand and place him next to his friend. They give you 2 Korok Seeds as a reward.
Now backtrack to the previous island with the Dispenser (can simply turn the cart around using Ultrahand, hit fan again). Follow the path north-east into Pit Cave. Harvest the Spicy Peppers growing at the cave entrance and cook them in the Cooking Pot. It’s best to cook one Spiy Pepper at a time, this gives you Spicy Sautéed Peppers that protects you from cold for 2:30 minutes. Eating these is super important for the next section, without these you can’t survive the cold! Cook about 10 of these. To cook open your inventory , press and “Hold” on ingredient, to return to game, to drop them into the pot.
Go through the cave and you’ll reach a snowy area. Be sure to consume the Spicy Sautéed Peppers now. A 2:30 minute timer will start to count down from the top left corner in the screen. You must constantly refresh this just before it reaches zero or you will take damage from the cold. Go north through Bottomless Cave. You will encounter some new flesh-eating plant enemies here. It doesn’t matter whether or not you kill them but they drop new materials if you do. Can attack their mouth repeatedly.
Exit Bottomless Cave at the top. Then head around the left and slide down the ice wall to a waterfall.
Behind the waterfall is a climbable wall. Everything else is frozen and can’t be climbed. You must climb specifically this wall behind the waterfall.
At the top you will finally reach Gutanbac Shrine!
Gutanbac Shrine – Solution
Upon entering the Shrine you get the Ascend ability to teleport through ceilings.
- Press + to select Ascend, stand under the ceiling at the end of the path, press to use it. This beams you up one floor. Press again to exit.
- Stand under the big pillar and use Ascend again (bonus: you can also use it under the small pillar for an extra chest). Beware, there’s an enemy upstairs and it will attack right away. To the right of this enemy are some wooden boxes you can destroy and then use Ascend behind them to reach another hidden chest.
- Cut the two strings holding up the bridge. Then stand under the bridge and use Ascend to beam up. Then use Ascend on the moving platform. When it moves underneath the top platform use Ascend a second time to reach the very top.
- Now simply interact with the green shrine. It restores power to your hand and rewards you with a Light of Blessing.
Return to the Closed Door and Open It
Now we have to get back to where the quest started. Luckily, there is a fantastic shortcut!
In front of Gutanbac Shrine, use Ascend ability on what looks like a dead tree above you.
Up there you also find some bonus loot, the chest contains Archaic Warm Greaves that increase Cold Resistance.
Behind this loot go down the snowy path. There you will find some Bird Machines. Pull out a Fan from Inventory > Zonai Devices, attach it to the back of a Bird using Ultrahand ability. If you don’t have a Fan you can grab one from the Dispenser to the right of the birds (use Ascend to get up the hill there).
Place the bird near the end of the bridge on the rails. Quickly step on (it will start to slide down so be quick) and hit the fan with a melee attack. Stand in the center of the bird, the activated fan will make it fly forward. When it’s above the water near Temple of Time you can jump off. You can balance the bird by standing on the wings to move it more to the side, or stand in the front to make it fly down. This allows you to aim it to where you want to go.
After landing in the water you will be right next to the Temple of Time! Simply climb back up the stairs and interact with the door and the quest is done.
