In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there are the following weather effects: Cold, Heat, Flaming. These hurt Link’s health if you don’t have protection against extreme weather effects. In the bottom right of the screen, next to the minimap, you can see the thermometer. If it goes in the blue zone you take cold damage, if it goes in the orange you take heat damage. There are also underground caves in Eldin Region (northeast region) that can cause Flaming Damage.
This guide explains how to protect against all extreme weather effects. In general, you can either cook a meal or wear armor that negates the weather effects. In the bottom right of the screen it also shows on the thermometer how severe the weather effects is. Some areas are colder and some are hotter. While a single piece of weather-protective armor may be enough for a slightly cold region, a very cold region would require two armor pieces or cooking a meal.
How to Protect Against Cold
Method #1: Cook a Cold Resistance Meal
An easy method is to cook Spicy Peppers. Don’t add other ingredients, toss only a Spicy Pepper in a cooking pot. Spicy Peppers grow at the entrance of Pit Cave, in the southeast of Great Sky Island (flying island where the game starts). A cooking pot is found in the same place, at this cave’s entrance. To cook open your inventory , press and “Hold” on ingredient, to return to game, to drop it into the pot. This results in Spicy Sautéed Peppers. Per Spicy Pepper it gives 2:30 minutes cold resistance. This effect stacks, so tossing multiple into the pot at once increases the length (e.g. if you put 2 peppers the effect lasts twice as long for 5:00 minutes). You can also cook them one by one, this doesn’t matter. Just be sure to carry enough of these when going into snowy regions.
Method #2: Equip Cold Resistant Armor
Armor that has Cold Resistance will show a blue snowflake icon and the words “Cold Resistance” in the item description. Each armor piece you equip with this effect makes the blue part of the thermometer smaller, meaning you can withstand a certain degree of cold without taking any damage. This effect stacks for up to 2 armor pieces. However, if it gets too cold you still need to consume a meal. You can buy Cold Resistant Armor from the merchants in Looking Landing (Central Hyrule region) and Rito Village (Hebra region).
How to Protect Against Heat
Method #1: Cook a Heat Resistance Meal
An easy method is to cook Chillshrooms (found in snowy regions such as Hebra in northwest), or Hydromelons (found in desert regions such as Gerudo Desert in southwest). To cook open your inventory , press and “Hold” on ingredient, to return to game, to drop it into the pot. You can find a cooking pot in the underground shelter of Lookout Landing.
Method #2: Equip Heat Resistant Armor
Armor that has Heat Resistance will show an orange sun icon and the words “Heat Resistance” in the item description. Each armor piece you equip with this effect makes the orange part of the thermometer smaller, meaning you can withstand a certain degree of heat without taking any damage. This effect stacks for up to 2 armor pieces. However, if it gets too hot you still need to consume a meal. You can buy Heat Resistant Armor from the merchant in Gerudo Town (in Gerudo region, desert area in the southwest of the map).
How to Protect Against Flame Damage
Method #1: Equip Flame Resistant Armor
Armor that has Flame Resistance will show a red fire icon and the words “Flame Resistance” in the item description. This is a “special” weather effect that’s not covered by the thermometer display in the bottom right, and normal Heat Resistance won’t protect against it. You must buy special Flame Resistant Armor that’s available from the merchants in Goron City (in Eldin Region, northeast part of the map). This is needed to enter certain lava caves that are burning hot.
