A Mystery in the Depths is a Main Quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TotK). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the A Mystery in the Depths story mission.
Requirement: Finished Main Quest: Camera Work in the Depths (and potentially Main Quest: Regional Phenomena)
Reward: Auto-Build Ability, Schema Stone (Schematic to Autobuild objects), Large Zonaite
Quest Info: Josha pieced together a large mural from fragments to complete a picture that might show a series of statues in the Depths. Each one looks toward the next, until the last gazes at a temple-like building that’s the focal point of the mural. Josha thinks this place may be real and hold a special Zonai power.
Objectives:
- Find the Temple-Like Building in the Depths
- Master Kohga Boss Fight
- Return to Josha in Lookout Landing
Starting Location: A Mystery in the Depths
After finishing Main Quest: Camera Work in the Depths for Josha & Robbie in Lookout Landing, they will give you “A Mystery in the Depths” main quest. This might not trigger right away, in which case come back later after making more story progress. I had also completed all of Main Quest: Regional Phenomena.
Find the Temple-Like Building in the Depths
The Temple-Like Building is found in the Depths at coordinates -805, -1926, -0520.
There are no quest markers for it. From your first visit to the depths you should already have activated the Iayusus Lightroot. Fast travel there (if you didn’t activate it, drop down the red crater next to Jiosin Shrine). From there you must head south in a straight line, going past another 2 Lighroots “Nihcayam Lightroot” & “Nogukoyk Lightroot“. See the map below, you can count the fogged quadrants on the map and put a marker at that spot.
When you arrive, you will see a temple with lights on it. Go inside and activate the green altar. This unlocks the last missing ability “Autobuild“.
Now use Ultrahand to put the wheel back on the cart. Then use Autobuild on the second cart to repair it. This triggers some dialogue and spawns a boss.
Master Kohga Boss Fight
This boss drives in a vehicle. Climb the side of the vehicle, then attack the boss on it. Repeat until he’s defeated. Sometimes he will also stop the vehicle to do special attacks, which makes him vulnerable for attack.
Defeating the boss also triggers Side Adventure: Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan. Also open the chest that the boss leaves behind for a Huge Crystallized Charge, which is equal to 100 normal crystallized charges and lets you upgrade your battery capacity. You can also talk to the Construct to get a new Schema Stone which unlocks a schematic for autobuilding Fanplanes.
Return to Josha in Lookout Landing
Return to the quest giver, Josha, in Lookout Landing to report your findings. She gives you a Schema Stone for Hot-Air Balloon.
Use it on the broken balloon next to Josha. You get a Large Zonaite as a reward.
This finishes A Mystery in the Depths Main Quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Next Quest: Impa and the Geoglyphs / The Dragon’s Tears / Crisis at Hyrule Castle (Part 2) / Find the Fifth Sage
