Village of Calamity is the 1st main story mission in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. This walkthrough will guide you through all areas of the Village of Calamity Main Quest.
Recommended Level: 1
Region: Encounter
Requirement: none, this is the game’s starting mission
Reward: Zhao Yun reinforcement, Best Flag Forward
Start walking down the main path until you reach the first enemy by a climbable barricade on your left. Follow the on-screen tutorial to learn how to perform a Normal and a Spirit Attack.
If you’d like though, you can sneak up on him from behind by gently tilting the left stick and press to perform a Fatal Strike.
When you’ve killed him, turned around to find Genuine Qi Flake x1 at the opposite side of the area. Now climb up the wall to find Genuine Qi Flake x1 and continue on to find another 2 guards.
In Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty you can parry with and deflect attacks by pressing right before an enemy is about to strike. Familiarize yourself with these controls as early as possible as the entire game’s fighting mechanics revolve around mastering them. Now go up the stairs to grab Genuine Qi Flake x1.
Continue down the main path to find another guard wielding a torch. Right after him is another guard ready to ambush you behind the tree. So, guard up and face him.
Then, jump over the rooftop to grab Heatproof Ice x1 and kick down the shortcut.
Continue up the opposite roof and you’ll be introduced to the Morale Rank System. Morale Rank affects your combat power. The lower your Morale Rank, the less damage you deal. Conversely, the higher your Morale Rank, the more dangerous you become. This, however, is also true for enemies. Drop down the rooftop to find Morale Rank 3 guard. If you die, you will lose Morale Points and half of your Genuine Qi. The Morale Rank of the enemy that killed you will increase to boot. However, you can regain your lost Genuine Qi and Morale Points by defeating the same enemy. If successful, you will also get Revenge. If the enemy is a boss, you will regain them by challenging them once again. However, if you die again before regaining them, the lost Genuine Qi and Morale Points will disappear forever.
Now sneak up and kill the guard standing by the tree. Now enter the house left of the guard you’ve just killed and open the chest to obtain Polearm Podao x1.
If you’d like, you can equip it for a slight damage boost, but bear in mind that Deflect Difficulty will drop, making it harder to deflect enemies’ attacks. In the same area, break the crates to grab Yellow Turban Bandit Garb x1. Now exit the building and proceed to the first Battle Flag of the mission.
At Battle Flags, you can rest to replenish you Dragon’s Cure Pots, level up and do more things we will uncover as we progress further into the game.
Battle Flag 1
Next to the Battle Flag is Yellow Turban Bandit’s Note – Part 1 tablet.
Now go up the stairs and perform a Fatal Strike on the enemy at the top, then climb up the platform to grab Heatproof Ice x1.
Drop down and you’ll be at a split, with several wicker crates on your left and some stairs on your right. First, go up the stairs to grab Yello Turban Bandit Footwear. Then, go back down and through the crates.
In this area, you’ll find a new enemy type, called Changgui. It’s a Morale Rank 15 enemy, so feel free to ignore it and come back for it another time. However, if you’re up for the challenge, sneak up on it from behind to remove half of its health bar, then it’s safer to alternate 1-2 strikes with the occasional dodges when it plunges at you. As for when it uses its slash attacks, you can hold to parry it. Rinse and repeat until it’s dead.
Once it’s dead, go behind the building it was facing and climb up the roof, then drop inside to find a chest with Lieutenant – General Greaves, then open the door to get back outside.
Climb up the same rooftop again and stay on it to eventually reach Genuine Qi Fragment x1. Then, turn around and drop down to find Yellow Turban Bandit Garb x1.
Return to the split and raise Marking Flag 1 to increase your Fortitude, then jump over the next set of platforms to find Genuine Qui Flake x1.
Dispose of the three guards here and then interact with Marking Flag 2 in the area. Continue up the stairs to reach Battle Flag 2.
Battle Flag 2
Interacting with this Battle Flag will also unlock Wizardry Spells, elemental magic you can cast in combat.
There are five elements, called Phases, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire. To learn a spell you must have a given Virtue level (attributes) and a Morale Rank. Once you’ve met both requirements, you can purchase a spell and then use the Set Wizardry Spells section to slot it. To then use a slotted spell, you must use + the corresponding button.
From the Flag, drop down and watch out for two sleeping enemies, behind the first tree and a bush respectively.
Then, loot the area for Genuine Qi Flake x1 and the platforms for Genuine Qi Flake x1. Continue up the hill, looting and killing enemies as you go. Shortly after, you’ll reach an area with two spearmen and an archer. In here you can also find Marking Flag 3.
Continue up the hill to find a Morale Rank 9 enemy. You need to defeat this enemy to access Battle Flag 3. Again, play it safe by landing 1-2 strikes, then deflecting and/or dodging his attacks as they come.
After killing him, interact with Battle Flag 3 and get ready for your first boss fight.
Battle Flag 3 – Zhang Liang, General of Man
Zhang Liang, General of Man’s boss fight spans over two phases.
- Phase 1: during Phase 1, he will try to smash you with his mace. This is the perfect opportunity to practice parrying and deflecting. Try to favor the latter over the former as learning deflection will help counter the Critical Blows (red sparkle). As Wo Long doesn’t have a proper stamina mechanic, be aggressive with Normal Attacks. Using Normal Attacks repeatedly breaks his defense. Occasionally though, take a break and let him attack you to practice deflection. When a red sparkle appears on his body, be ready to counter his Critical Blow at the very last moment (NOT when you see the red sparkle). This first phase is fairly simple, so use it to practice deflection. If necessary, let him kill you to keep practicing.
- Phase 2: during Phase 2, he will turn into a stone demon. Now he will try to attack you with both his mace and tail. Parry his tail attacks as well as when he summons stone from the ground, but try to deflect his other attacks. If you manage to deflect his Critical Blow, you’ll be able to deal massive Spirit Damage, gradually leaving the boss open for a Fatal Strike (lock-on turns red). Eventually, you’ll be able to use + to summon the Divine Beast. Press the prompts when you see them to end the fight.
