Battle Flag 1
From Battle Flag 1, you can go right or left of it through some bamboo or along the stream. First, head right to find a dog and Decorative Knot item which gives you a boost in Genuine Qi obtention.
On the left side of the Battle Flag is a Changgui which is Morale Rank 10.
Unless you’re confident to take it on, I’d say move on along the stream. On the stream, defeat the two Shuigui and the dog and then get ashore.
From the bank, turn around as though you were to go back to the Battle Flag and get rid of the giant Huoshu. Continue past where the giant Houshu was and you’ll find Battle Flag 2.
Battle Flag 2
Immediately after Battle Flag 2 is a small wooden alcove with some Dragon’s Cure Powder, which restores health over time when used. Before proceeding, go back to the river and get to the opposite bank to find two Changgui. Defeat the one closes to the bank and then interact with Marking Flag 1.
Afterwards, defeat the second Changgui going up and down the hill, and then you’ll reach an area with several Huoshu and one more Changgui perched on a rock. You need to defeat this Changgui as well to be able to interact with the corrupted Battle Flag.
Battle Flag 3
Return to Battle Flag 2 and make your way up the stairs. Here a Zhuyan enemy will ambush you. Deflect his attacks and counter with some heavy blows, then open the chest from the shrine.
Behind the shrine, follow the stairs leading to Marking Flag 2.
Now return to Battle Flag 3 and continue downstairs. Before doing anything else, destroy the bamboo at the bottom of the stairs for a side area containing Marking Flag 3. Watch out out through as there are two small and one big Huoshu here ready to ambush you.
They like blowing themselves up, so watch out for AoE damage and don’t forget to deflect their rolling Critical Blows. We can continue along the stream. Clear out the area of the Shuigui if you feel up for it, otherwise proceed on to Battle Flag 4, in your path and hard to miss.
Battle Flag 4
Immediately after Battle Flag 4, up the small staircase, is a Shitieshou.
Now, continue on until you see some brown bamboo on your left to destroy. Destroy these and then continue on to Marking Flag 4.
Continue along the main corrupted path until you see a big branch on your left. Walk along this branch to land on a platform with a Golden Cicada Shell.
From the Golden Cicada Shell’s location, jump over the branch in front of you and then climb up the ledges to eventually reach an area with the Despairing Taoist’s Note tablet.
From here, continue along the branches to eventually pick up Dragon Vein Essence.
Now make your way back to the very first branch and continue on to the main area. There’s a Battle Flag here but it’s corrupted by a new enemy type called Zhupolong, a crocodile-looking demon. His Critical Blow attack is similar to the Warlock’s, i.e. he flings his tail at you with some delay. Other than that, let Hong take care of most of the fight, keep your distance and cast your Divine Beast when available.
Next, interact with Battle Flag 5, the final one for this mission.
Battle Flag 5
Loot the area where you fought the Zhupolong. Directly above the Battle Flag you’ve just activated is the next Marking Flag. Continue on up the branch that was behind the Zhupolong’s location and at the split, head left and up the branch. Follow the branches to reach Marking Flag 5, the final one for this mission.
Return to the split and continue on. Immediately after the split are two stone lanterns. Behind the left one is Taoist’s House Key.
Now you can proceed to the boss.
Aoye Boss Fight
Aoye is an enormous bull-looking demon. You may want to first do a couple of test runs to familiarize yourself with his move set. He has quite an extensive one and never follows the same pattern. Here’s a brief rundown for his wide plethora of attacks and what to do for each one of them:
- Critical Blow: he only has one Critical Blow. This can take many forms, including one during which he releases his tentacles from his mouth. The common trait of all types of Critical Blows is that they’re always charged and delayed. When he unleashes it, deflect it at the very last possible moment. This is key to deal considerable Spirit damage. The Critical Blow is one of the possible starting moves.
- Belly-flop: he will jump in the air and try to squash you with his belly. Try to deflect or dodge it. This is another possible starting move.
- Tailspin: he spins his tail to inflict damage. Deflect it.
- Sweeping/Piercing Arms: when he sweeps his arms, deflect them. He will sweep his arms at you 4-5 times in a row. So, focus on deflecting to deal Spirit damage. When he pauses, retaliate with some 1-2 quick attacks. A variant of this move his that he uses his arms as daggers.
- White Horn Stabs: he uses his white horns for some quick stabs. Better to dodge away when he starts using the horns. These attacks are really quick and need optimal deflection to avoid damage.
- Tentacle Stomps: he summons his back tentacles and continually uses them to stab you. As with the white horn stabs, try to keep your distance.
- Ice Shards: when he raises his body while still on the ground, he will release ice shards from his belly. This only usually happens during the second half of the fight. The ice shards he sends at you can be deflated.
- Icicle Storm: every time you successfully deflect a Critical Blow, he will summon an Icicle Storm which can be deflected or avoided.
The key to winning this fight is patience and impeccable deflection timing, especially with Ayoe’s Critical Blows. Do a couple of test runs to learn the timing of his moves and how to deflect them as optimally as possible. Don’t play aggressively, but prioritize deflection to increase your Spirit damage and land 1-2 hits only when he momentarily takes a break. Eventually Ayoe will perform a Critical Blow. When he does, get ready to deflect it for considerable Spirit damage and eventually a Fatal Strike when the lock-on turns red. If you can’t, repeat the same strategy until the lock-on turns red. If you need a temporary truce, encourage Hong to unleash her moves. A tough fight for sure, probably the first in the game.
