Starting Location: The Trial of Crooked-Eye Phil
This quest is started in the Overworld after Main Quest 6: Ballad of Bones.
Find Crooked-Eye Phil in Crackmast Cove (it will change to just “Find Phil”)
Your mission is to free Phil. Go to Crackmast Cove by following the quest marker to find him.
Knock on box
Knock on Phil’s box once you reach it.
Use lever to release Phil
Use the lever behind the box to release it.
Check out the ruckus
Check out the box you just released
Kill cage guards
Some guards will appear, kill them.
Find direc-shi-oh-nays to Phil’s cave & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Follow the path to find the certificate.
Find a local & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
With the certificate in your hand, you need to find a local. Follow the path.
Talk to Surle Finbreaker & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Talk to Surle the local, who is a pirate NPC.
Enter lower caverns & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Surle wants you to find the lower caverns to get the real certificate.
Move deeper into lower caverns & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
After you entered the caverns, move deeper into them.
Kill pirates & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Kill the pirates.
Examine Phil’s puzzle & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Approach the puzzle and examine it.
Solve Phil’s puzzle & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Solve the puzzle. Use the middle lever once, the right lever once and the left lever two times.
Enter Phil’s lair & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Now enter Phil’s lair.
Find Phil’s inner sanctum & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Find Phil’s inner sanctum by following the path.
Open Phil’s inner sanctum & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Pull the skull to open the sanctum.

Just enter the sanctum.
Search inner sanctum & Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Search the sanctum to find the certificate. Or just open the chest to end this objective.

Simply open the chest.
Take Find Certificate of Non-Evilness
Take the certificate.
Find secret exit & Find Phil
Find the secret exit to your left.
Go to Scallywag Landing & Find Phil
Got to Scallywag, follow the path.
Talk to Surle Finbreaker & Find Phil
Talk to Surle again.
Enter Scallywag Landing & Find Phil
Phil will open the gate, follow the path once again.
Melee mysterious totems & Find Phil
You need to melee three totems, they are not far from each other. You’ll find them easily.

Talk to Surle Finbreaker & Find Phil
Talk to Surle after you destroyed the totems.
Enter jail compound & Find Phil / Optional Objective: Destroy Totems x2
Enter the jail to find Phil. Follow the quest marker. On your way to the jail, you’ll find two totems. You can melee them to complete the optional objective.

Optional Objective: Destroy Totem 2
Main Objective: Enter jail compound
Check Phil’s cage & Find Phil
Check Phil’s cage inside the jail compound.
Reach jail
Turn around and go to the jail.
Find another way in
The gate is closed, you have to find another way into the jail. Turn around to find the cannon.
Shoot powder keg
The powder is behind the cannon, just shoot it.
Sneak into jail
Go into the jail to find Phil.
Find Phil
Inside the jail make your way onto the top to find Phil.
Go to pirate court
The court is behind Phil’s cage.
Talk to Phil
Talk to Phil inside the court.
Approach the stand
Approach the stand and talk to the judges.
Present Certificate of Non-Evilness
Present the Certificate to the judges.
Optional Objective: Shoot Judge Boil in the leg OR Optional Objective: Melee totem
Shoot Judge Boil in the leg or melee the totem, it doesn’t matter what you choose, because the next objective won’t change.
Kill Judges x3, Kill Dogfish & Kill rabid prisoners
Now kill all enemies.
Talk to Phil
Talk to Phil one last time.

This is a bugged trophy afaik, me and my friend completed this quest in one sitting and after comparing trophies I’m missing this trophy
Trophies are bugged if playing in co-op for non-hosts. It’s mentioned in the main trophy guide. So unfortunately you have to replay this mission or hope that gearbox fix this.
