The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered – How to Get Ectoplasm

Ectoplasm is an item and alchemy ingredient in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. 5 Ectoplasm are needed for the Fighters Guild quest Drunk and Disorderly, which in turn is needed for the trophy/achievement Swordsman, Fighters Guild.

During the Drunk and Disorderly quest, you are tasked with bringing five Ectoplasm to Margarte. However, the game doesn’t provide waypoints where to get this item which can be confusing.

Quickest Guaranteed Way to Get 6 Ectoplasm

By far the most reliable method that is doable at any point in the game is to loot Ectoplasm from Ghost/Wraith enemies. You find 6 Ghosts in the Rielle dungeon. You can fast travel to Bruma in the north of the map (click the green map icon). From Bruma it’s only a short walk to the north-west. Here’s the Rielle map location:

Enter the dungeon, then go downstairs through the blue-glowing door into the crypt. There are 6 green ghosts in the crypt. Defeat them and loot their ectoplasm. If needed you can lower the combat difficulty in the game settings. Ghosts are immune to standard weapons, you need a silver weapon or use magic. For example, the Silver Longsword which guards in Imperial City wear. You can buy appropriate weapons from blacksmith shops.

Afterward you can return to Margarte and give her the Ectoplasm.

Other Methods:

• You can sometimes buy Ectoplasm from alchemy shops. There are at least two that occasionally have it in stock: “The Main Ingredient” in Imperial City Market District & “All Things Alchemical” in Skingrad. They don’t always have it in stock, but you can rest for 72 hours in-game time to make them refill their stock. It is quite random however and sometimes they will have multiple for sale and other times none at all. They charge 36 Gold per Ectoplasm.
• As part of Main Quest: Blood of the Divines you will slay lots of Ghosts/Wraiths that drop Ectoplasm.
• Any Ghost or Wraith type enemy will drop it. You encounter them in various dungeons and forts, however some are tied to quests or in hard to reach places. The Rielle dungeon shown above is the easiest option early in the game that gives a decent amount of Ectoplasm.
