In Starfield you can build Outposts on planets to mine resources and use them as a personal base of operations.
To build an outpost free roam on a planet and open the Scanner. On Xbox: LB / on PC: F > walk around until the “Outpost” prompt at the bottom of the screen turns from gray to white > then you can press Xbox: X / PC: R to place an Outpost:
This only works in certain areas with nearby Resource Veins, not everywhere. You can’t build Outposts too close to other Points of Interest so you may need to walk away a couple hundred meters/yards. Placing an Outpost also unlocks the Home Sweet Home Achievement.
There is a limit of 8 total Outposts allowed throughout all planets.
After placing the Outpost beacon, the first thing you should do is build an Extractor over a Resource Vein. These can be placed where the ground is marked in a different color. Every planet has different resources available. Next you should build a Power Resource to output at least 5 Power for the Extractor to work. Build a Resource Container and connect the Extractor to it so that the mined resources can be stored. You can check in after a while to empty the container. Containers can further be connected to other buildings to create an automated production chain. Also see How to Establish Cargo Links to automatically trade resources between your Outposts.
You will need to research new Outpost Buildings at a Research Lab to unlock new higher-level buildings. See How to Research New Items. The required resources can all be mined from planets or simply buy them from any merchant.
