String Theory is a Side Case in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the String Theory side quest.
Starting Borough: Scaladio
Starting Location: St. Clement’s Cathedral
Quest Giver: Violin Poster outside Cathedral on wall
Requirement: Finished Main Case “A Gilded Cage”
Reward: 20 Money, His First Bow trophy / achievement
Case Info: STOLEN – My old violin has been taken. If you have any information that may aid in my instrument’s return, please visit me on Professor’s Rd, north of Adler St in Scaladio. All help appreciated!
Starting Location: String Theory
String Theory case starts in Borough: Scaladio, Place: St. Clement’s Cathedral, by interacting with the Violin poster.
This quest is only available after Main Case “A Gilded Cage“.
Alternatively, it can be started by eavesdropping on two men in front of the Cordona Police Station, which will give you a clue to go pick up the Violin poster at St. Clement’s Cathedral. This can be skipped as you can head straight there to pick up the poster without eavesdropping on the men.
Solution
1) The violin poster tells you to go talk to the quest giver at Professor’s Rd. This is the next road north-east of St. Clement’s Cathedral, very close by. There you can find an old man at the entrance of a redbrick house, putting up a violin poster. Talk to him and offer your help.
2) He will invite you into his home. Follow him inside, through the door where he was standing. Inspect the broken glass display by the window, it has 5 clues: broken bottle, violin bow, lock, white fabric (rotate and inspect its side), bloodstain.
3) You can also interact with 3 optional clues, the music notes, the certificate on the shelf, and the piano with a cloth over it.
4) Then use concentration mode / on the door. It reveals the door was kicked in.
5) Talk to the old man again, go through all dialogues with him. That’s everything you can do here.
6) In the casebook, go to the “Scrap of Fabric” objective and do a chemical analysis on it (solution image bel0w).
7) Now track the “Bloody Trail” objective from the casebook. Leave the building, turn left towards Professor’s Rd. and use concentration mode / to follow the trail.
8) The point where you’ll end up is the north-east corner of St. Clement’s Cathedral in a market area (location below). You must interact with a splatter on the ground in concentration mode.
9) Afterward, talk to the kid with the red hat in the same spot. It doesn’t matter what dialogue you pick with him (I chose “It’s not your fault” for the nicer option). He’ll tell you the thieves also took his donkey.
10) Track objective “Stolen Donkey” and pin it to your screen. While it’s pinned, talk to the merchants in the nearby stalls across from the boy to get a tip what happened to the donkey. It’s best to equip “Worker’s Apron” in the wardrobe (bought from clothing trader), as they are more sympathetic towards that outfit and not Sherlock’s default suit. Generally, just try to mirror the merchants’ outfits to get info from them. Depending on the time of day it will vary which merchants are there. At night there are fewer merchants, so if none of them are talking to you, let the game sit idle until it’s daytime and more merchants will show up.
11) Go to the archway west of the boy, there use concentration mode to see hoof tracks on the floor. View them and follow them west, they lead to the donkey. Along the way you can interact with a cap and bananas on the floor but this is optional.
12) The trail ends at “Wet Whiskers” bar. Once there, eavesdrop on the two men. Filter out these terms: Bunch of sailors, Wrecking the Tavern, Patrons frightened.
13) To their left, go through the bar entrance that says “Wet Whiskers” above it. Defeat all enemies inside. Then pick up the violin from the barstool (must rotate it and view the text on its back).
14) Track the optional objective “Saving Sean”. Return to the boy at the market to tell him where his donkey is.
15) Track objective “Stolen Violin”, head back to the quest giver to give him back his Violin.
16) Lastly, use concentration on the music notes in his room, then talk to the old man once again. As a reward you get 20 Money and His First Bow trophy / achievement.
This finishes the String Theory Cordona Story case in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.
