Ashina Outskirts – Dilapidated Temple
Once you wake up you will receive your Prosthetic Arm, your multifunctional tool… at least later on when you found some upgrades for it. For now you can use your Grapple Hook to travel between grappling points and to grab some enemies. Talk to the sculptor inside and Emma outside of the building you are in. You can now choose between two paths. Head right to find a friendly guy who wants to fight you. Do so and he will become your training dummy. Completing all his tutorials is recommended to learn the basic attack and defense techniques in the game.
Ashina Outskirts – Outskirts Gate Path
Take the left path from the temple and use the grappling hook to reach the Ashina Outskirts Idol. You can take the lower path or the upper path to continue. The upper path lets you drop behind the enemies to kill them from behind. Both paths have some items for you to grab, so be sure to check both of them.
Following the path you will shortly find the Outskirts Wall – Gate Path Idol and a building with a hole in the wall. Grapple inside to find the Shuriken Wheel, a tool for your prosthetic arm. Feel free to use the Idol to fast travel back to the sculptor to equip it right away.
Shortly after the building you will reach a mini-boss: General Naomori Kawarada. He acts as a tutorial to grabs and sweeps. You need to dodge grabs and jump over sweeps to avoid getting hit. If you manage to defeat him you will receive a Prayer Bead (4 of them will let you enhance your attributes) and a Gourd Seed (you can give those to Emma, which will allow you to carry more healing charges).
Ashina Outskirts – Path to the Ogre
Follow the path in an open area with some enemies. You will then have to take the left path and you will see a weird looking lady on the first floor of a building. Talk to her and she will be sure you are her son. You obviously aren’t but the lady will still give you the Young Lord’s Bell Charm anyway. The bell can be brought back to the altar next to the Sculptor at Dilapidated Temple to unlock a new area Hirata Estate. That’s for later though, for now we will finish Ashina Outskirts. The old woman’s son is on a cliff barely 10 meters away from her but she can’t see him due to probably being blind. You can talk to him and he will thank you for talking to his mother.
Keep following the path until you see a wall with a cannon shooting enemy. Before heading there take a left and use the grappling points to the top of the mountain to find a shopkeeper in a tent (this will also grant you the Memorial Mob trophy / achievement). Do your shopping if necessary (you can buy Robert’s Firecracker there, another tool for your arm) and continue toward the cannon guy. Take care of all the enemies and you will find the Outskirts Wall – Stairway Idol shortly after that on your right.
Ashina Outskirts – Outskirts Wall Stairway
Just a few steps from the Idol you can eavesdrop on another couple of soldiers talking about a chained enemy nearby. Take care of them, run up the stairs and you will find the fellow they were talking about. The Chained Ogre is a mini-boss you can’t skip. You can get some free hits on him while he is chained but he will break free relatively fast. Avoid his high damage grabs by dodging towards him twice / and land a hit or two. Simply repeat this process. You can also use the firecrackers (can be bought from the merchant we visited in previous section), to stun him for a short time to get another hit or two. You can get more hits if you manage to stagger him. Do not get grabbed on the stairs when he is with the back to cliff, or he will throw you off it. Once defeated you will be granted Shinobi Medicine Rank 1 (stronger healing )skill and another Prayer Bead (vitality & posture upgrade). After the fight grapple up and find another Gourd Seed there. Be sure to give it to Emma at the Dilapidated Temple to earn another healing charge.
After dropping down on the other side you can kill another mini-boss General Tenzen Yamauchi for another Prayer Bead. Take out all the smaller enemies first and then run back so he loses sight of you. Then return and sneak up to him for a stealth kill. Then dodge behind him when he attacke, land 1-2 hits and repeat.
Ashina Outskirts – Optional area of the Headless
Looking from the place you dropped down into the battle with the general you are supposed to go straight forward, but there is also an optional area to the right. You can grapple your way to a dark cave and when you drop down in the cave a fight with the Headless will start. You can’t do anything against him now so don’t waste your time here but remember the area for later on.
Ashina Outskirts – Underbridge Valley
Backtrack to the place where you fought General Tenzen Yamauchi. At the end of the area there’s a broken bridge facing the abyss. Across the abyss you can see a temple entrance in the distance. At this point it’s easy to get lost and wonder where to go next. When facing the broken bridge, look left and down at a tree branch. You can grapple on to it and jump further down.
After dropping down find the Underbridge Valley Idol. After jumping across some grappling hook trees a huge snake will appear. This works like a stealth section. You will have to use grappling hook and tall grass (to hide) to get past the snake.
At some point you will have to shimmy across a ledge behind some icicles. Once you see a Palanquin, hide inside and stab the snake in its eye when it turns red. Use the chance to escape the snake and the area. You will then run into the Ashina Castle Gate Fortress Idol.
Ashina Outskirts – Ashina Castle Gate Fortress & Gyoubu Oniwa Boss
You will reach a castle-like area. Traverse through the only path to find a locked door. Instead of taking the door head to the rear part of the area and drop down to the battleground area and your first main boss will appear.
Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa is a horse riding samurai with a huge spear. The best method to defeat him is to block his attack strings until he delivers his strong attack (you will recognize it easily) and dodge behind it during the attack to get some hits. Another opportunity to get some hits is leaving some distance between you and the boss and wait for the grapple icon to trigger to pull yourself next to him for a hit or two. Once he is defeated you will be granted his Memory which you can use at the nearby Ashina Castle Gate Idol to upgrade your attack power.
Once you cross the gate at the battlefield the Outskirts will be finished and you will be heading into the Ashina Castle. You can either go there or visit the Hirata Estate by offering the Bell you got from the weird lady to the Buddha Statue next to the Sculptor. It’s recommended to play through Hirata Estate first!
This concludes the “Ashina Outskirts” area.

Hi, there’s a hidden Prayer Bead in a chest in the ceiling of the building where you speak to the Tengu of Ashina after the boss fight, it’s the path to the right next to the Memorial Mob.

I was stuck on that mini boss after the chaines orge and your guide helped. It also helps to use chasing slice skill and dodge retreat over and over to whittle down his health.
