Red Dead Redemption 2 Magicians for Sport Walkthrough

October 31, 2018 by Jack McBastard 13 Comments

Magicians for Sport is the 35th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Magicians for Sport Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.

Magicians for Sport is unlocked after completing The Course of True Love III.

Quest Giver: Dutch
Chapter: 3
Region: Lemoyne

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • Inspect all the clues in Trelawny’s Caravan
  • While tracking, stay within 30 feet of the Trelawny’s trail
  • Kill 2 Bounty Hunters in the cornfields within 1 minute
  • Complete the mission without taking any health items

Starting Location: Clemens Point, Lemoyne

Talk to Dutch

  • GOLD MEDAL: Complete the mission without taking any health items

Dutch doesn’t seem that concerned with Trelawny’s reports of bounty hunters following the gang, but as a precaution he sends Arthur and Charles to talk to him to find out more details.

Find Charles and speak to him, then get on your horse.

Ride to Trelawny’s Location

Wait for Charles to mount up and then ride to Trelawny’s caravan.

When you arrive, you notice that Trelawny’s caravan has been ransacked, but I’m not sure how Arthur knows this given the state of the entire camp.

Search the Caravan

Go inside and look for clues.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Inspect all the clues in Trelawny’s Caravan

When using Eagle Eye, clues will have a golden glow compared to regular items which will glow blue. Inspect all the clues:

  • The sandwich on the side table was left untouched

  • The bed was slept in but not made

  • The bloody rag on the washtub

Follow the Trail

  • GOLD MEDAL: While tracking, stay within 30 feet of the Trelawny’s trail

When you’ve found all the clues, outside Charles will notice tracks, which is a good indicator to use Eagle Eye to follow Trelawny’s trail.

Either Trelawny or the person who took him rode away on a Morgan horse. Follow that trail closely, refreshing the trail meter by going back into Eagle Eye briefly every time it gets low. Make sure to stay within 30′ of the trail to fulfill the gold medal requirements.

It will pass directly by a stranger’s camp who you can ask for information.

During the conversation Charles will notice that Trelawny’s cane is lying in the stranger’s camp. This has an affect on the mood.

After you knock out the bounty hunter that you were fighting, Charles will subdue the other one allowing you to beat some answers out of him.

It seems Trelawny has been taken to a nearby cabin by Braithwaite Manor. Follow Charles.

Charles will lead you to the cabin, and the bounty hunters with quite possibly the worst timing in the world. Take a moment to ensure that you have a good sniper rifle equipped and in hand when you get off your horse. You will need it for the next section of the mission.

Confronted by two heavily armed men…

…they decide that discretion is the better part of valor, and run in the cornfields.

Trelawny tells you to leave him and go after the bounty hunters, leaving it up to you and Charles to hunt them down.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Kill 2 Bounty Hunters in the cornfields within 1 minute
  • GOLD MEDAL: Complete the mission without taking any health items

Now it might seem that you can immediately go into Dead Eye and kill all three at once, but don’t waste it. The bounty hunters are invulnerable until they reach their hiding places in the cornfield.

You have one of two choices. If you are playing this for the first time, you will have a sniper rifle and can stay on the hill and kill them as soon as they move. Use Dead Eye to ensure you get a good hit. Watch for the birds taking to the sky, or for rustles in the cornfield as they move to give away their position. If you are playing this as a replay, you only have access to a repeater at best. Your best bet is to keep after the bounty hunter in the lower cornfield closest to you and kill him immediately, then hope you get lucky and find the second in the field to the west of you.

After you kill two, the third will drop his gear in the field and disappear. Charles will inspect it, determining that the bounty hunter couldn’t have gotten far. You may have to be close to Charles to trigger this dialogue. Search through the surrounding fields until you “find” him. Lucky Charles is good with a throwing knife.

A moment later you will hear gunfire coming from the barn southwest of the fields. Seems there’s a little bit of bounty hunter clean-up needed.

Kill two more bounty hunters, then return to Trelawny.

Help him back onto his horse, and the mission will be completed.

This finishes Magicians for Sport main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest Horse Flesh for Dinner starts.

That last Bounty Hunter in the barn has the rare Rolling Block sniper rifle and this is the only chance in the game to get it.

Is there a reason this mission is just not appearing for me at all yet? I’ve been following the order of missions on the guide. Done The Course of True Love III. Still hasn’t appeared.

Have you done debt collection IV (sorry couldn’t remember the mission name)? Not sure if there are correlations but this mission appear just after I’ve done that

Oh nevermind, for some reason it just decided to appear as soon as I got in a certain range away from the camp.

Loot the three bounty hunters for easy ~$60, helps towards the $250 goal for the trophy.

Also, the two in the barn for a combined total of ~$100

You can definitely shoot the 2 of the bounty hunters required for the gold medal before they enter the cornfields. I just had a sniper with me and you can take the two front ones out before they sneak into fields with the use of dead eye

Confirmed, I used my Lancaster repeater painted the guy on the farthest left three times, he died
right most guy headed right into field I put three into him too…

NO health use was bad news for me since I couldnt restart at the checkpoint or it failed me for having replenished health so three times I ran the whole mission till I read Jonas saying he killed them at the start.

I noticed once this quest was completed, “The fine joys of Tobacco” quest marker disappeared. Will it return or should it be done beforehand?

me too, thats why I’m glad I saved beforehand and whether or not the missions are dependent on each other, I will just reload my save and do the tobacco one first. I do wonder if it is though, because if you think about it, perhaps you were shooting on their property and they don’t want you back there anytime soon?

Yep – you can kill bounty hunters before they enter to the cornfield, BUT you have to do it after you move, a step or so – before that they’re immortal.

Also – you can abandon quest and retry checkpoint whenever you fail 1min kill, you can still achieve gold.

No you cannot reload checkpoint on failed 1 minute kill. Instant fail because off the “use no health items” requirement. at least, I can’t get gold when reloading that checkpoint
