Red Dead Redemption 2 Horse Flesh for Dinner Walkthrough

November 3, 2018 by Jack McBastard 3 Comments

Horse Flesh for Dinner is the 36th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Horse Flesh for Dinner Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.

Horse Flesh for Dinner is unlocked after completing Advertising, the New American Art – II.

Quest Giver: John Marston
Chapter: 3
Region: Lemoyne

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • Kill the stable hand showing you the horses
  • Catch the stallion within 10 seconds
  • Get 5 headshots

Starting Location: Caliga Hall, Lemoyne

Talk to John

To start this quest, travel to Caliga Hall. You will be stopped at the gate by the guards, but they will stand down when they hear that you are meeting Marston to talk business about some horses.

The guard directs you towards the south, to the stables. Ride around the fence and follow the waypoint to find them.

You’ll find them talking with Tavish Gray, patriarch of the Gray family. He wants you to steal some prized horses from the Braithwaites without having the deed linked back to him. He really does not like them.

He also directs you to a contact who deals in stolen horses, allowing you to sell them at much higher rates that you would at a normal stable, which can be useful for the future.

Follow John

It sounds like a great deal. Get back on your horse and follow John to the Braithwaite Manor. You make a plan to make the Braithwaites think that you’re in the market to buy horses to get in.

John fast talks his way past the guard, and you’ll ride to the stables and hitch your horse.

Arthur will approach the stablehand and begin the negotiations. Eventually he will give in, and lead you inside. When the moment presents itself…

  • GOLD MEDAL: Kill the stable hand showing you the horses

A stealth kill won’t draw attention, allowing you to make a cleaner getaway. Plus it fulfills the gold medal requirement, so there’s that too.

Approach the Horse

Arthur says he’ll grab the white horse while John and Javier grab the other two. As soon as you open the door to the stall, the horse begins to buck, reacting to the stranger that has him trapped. Target him and calm him down while approaching slowly.

Calm him down until you can pat the horse and make him stop panicking, then lead the horse out of the stable.

Lead him over to the other two horses, and Marston will tether them to Javier’s horse.

Its about this time that everything will go wrong.

Take the Horses to Clemens Cove

Hopefully you have your bandanna up by now. Shoot your way out of the fields, making sure to get five headshots along the way.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Get 5 headshots

Shortly after you leave your last pursuit behind, you’ll hear one of the horses squeal and start to buck. Javier will notice. Make sure that you equip your lasso and have it at the ready.

Within five seconds, that stallion will break free and start to run. If you’re fast enough you can lasso it immediately before it gets too far away.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Catch the stallion within 10 seconds

Once you have him lassoed, ride back to the group with the horse in tow.

You will meet the horse rustlers, and Arthur will voice his skepticism that this deal is going to be nearly as lucrative as Gray had suggested.

You end up getting a lot less than you should have, but as they say, crime doesn’t pay.

This finishes Horse Flesh for Dinner main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest Friends in Very Low Places starts.

A tip for gold medal – if you fail catching stallion within 10 sec – you can abandon quest – replay checkpoint. It’s still valid for gold.

Anyone else having problems with registering the 5 headshots on this one? I’ve counted 8, and it doesn’t register. Does dying and restarting from a checkpoint nullify this goal?

I would agree. I did it once, had to restart checkpoints while the shooting was going on, didn’t get the headshot requirement (even though I did hit them).

Re-loaded, no restarts during the shooting, but I did have to restart at the stallion checkpoint once and got the gold.
