Geology for Beginners is a Stranger Mission Strand (Side Questline) in Red Dead Redemption 2. This Walkthrough shows how to complete this Stranger Mission in RDR2.
Quest Giver: Francis Sinclair
Region: Hut north-west of Strawberry

Reward: Kentucky Bourbon, Rock Statue, Old Brass Compass (missable)
Geology for Beginners Starting Location
Find 10 Rock Faces
Refer to the Rock Carvings Locations Guide with a map, images and video.
Send All 10 Locations to Francis Sinclair
After you found all 10 Rock Carvings, go to any post office and mail the coordinates to Francis Sinclair. Post offices are marked on the map in every major town, e.g. in Strawberry. Then sleep for 2 days and return to the post office find an invitation to Francis Sinclair’s hut in your mail.
Collect your Reward from Francis Sinclair
Return to where the quest started. A stranger icon should show up there, either read the invitation you got in the mail (press 
to open satchel and find it under documents, invitations) or rest for a few hours. The white quest icon must show up at Francis’s hut. Then you can enter through the front door and see a cutscene. After the cutscene, make sure you enter the house again and grab the missable “Old Brass Compass” from the table, which you can craft into a Talisman. If you don’t grab it now, the cabin will be closed later and you can no longer get it.
Then the mission ends and it checks off the rock carvings from your collectibles for 100% completion.

You should add in the rewards that there is an “old brass compass” at the table in the house where you were invited, if you take it to the fence you can craft a trinket (I don’t remember the effect clearly, something about guns condition slower decrease rate)

If you pass chapter 2 without starting this, is it lost or can you go back to it. I’m in chapter 4 and nothing shows up when I go to the stranger start

I’ve discovered a bug:
After receiving this mission request, spend some days far from the west Elizabeth, and then return to Francis’ cabin. Create an archive right in front of that cabin, and load that archive. After loading, return to the cabin IMMEDIATELY, then you will be able to enter it. Then you can get the compass without collecting those annoying rock faces
