Red Dead Redemption 2 All Animal Locations (Zoologist & Skin Deep)

December 12, 2018 by PowerPyx 31 Comments

Red Dead Redemption 2 has 178 Animal Locations. Studying and skinning all animals in RDR2 unlocks the Zoologist and Skin Deep trophy or achievement. This guide shows where to find all animals locations and what they look like.

The missable Chapter 5 animals from Guarma island are not needed for any trophies and achievements! You only need to get the ones that can be found on the main map. However, the Chapter 5 animals count as “extras” and let you skip some other main map animals in exchange.

You can keep track of which animals you have found under Pause Menu, Progress, Compendium, Animals. Rockstar Social Club keeps track of the trophy and achievement progress with a percentage number.

For Zoologist you must look at the animal with R1 through the binoculars to study it. Tracking the animal is not required for the trophy. This means you don’t need 100% in the compendium on each animal (just studying it with R1 is enough). Only animals in the compendium count (e.g. there’s one missable lion from a stranger mission but it’s not a compendium animal and doesn’t matter for trophies). Also keep in mind you need to study all subspecies. For example there are many types of pigs, hawks etc. and you need them all – so basically everything listed in the animals guide below.

For Skin Deep you must skin all the skinnable animals. Only half the animals can be skinned (everything with a pelt). Small birds that are “plucked” and tiny animals that go straight into your satchel don’t count towards this trophy. Do keep in mind that some large birds can be skinned.

Legendary Animals reportedly don’t count for either trophy because they are missable. If you kill a legendary animal by mistake (or it dies by other means) and you forgot to skin it, then the carcass might disappear forever.

One more tip: when aggressive animals attack you, you can’t study them. Throw a poisoned throwing knife at them and they will walk off, then can be studied.

All Animal Locations Guide

Thie guide contains two images per animal. One shows the animal, one shows the location. The animal was found at the location where the red marker is set on the map. The texts are from the official in-game compendium descriptions and mention the spawn areas as well as the loot and craftable item. Most animals have multiple spawn zones, the areas displayed here are what’s confirmed. Keep in mind animal spawns are randomized, they just have certain spawn zones allocated to them. This means they CAN spawn in those zones but won’t always be there (can take many tries to make them spawn).

Best Way to Get all 178 Animals: As you play through the story, hunt anything you come across. Always study the animal first, then skin it. Some animals can’t be found until after the story because parts of New Austin are unreachable. After the story, just ride all over the map and get every animal you randomly find. Complete all stranger missions and collectibles while looking for animals along the way. Keep the animals for last. By that point you should have found 120+ animals just from natural gameplay and can look up the rest here. Keep in mind some animals are night active (e.g. wolves, bats, owls) while others only spawn at day. Birds can either be sitting or flying and show up at daytime when it’s sunny. If you cannot find a certain animal in the marked area, make a camp and sleep to advance time or quit out to the main menu and hit continue. Each time you quit out it cycles through the available animals and you may get new species to show up! Effectively, you can just keep quitting and continuing at the same place to farm lots of different species.

Here is the best animal hunting spot in the game, you can find many types of  lot of animals, especially birds. And even more especially owls. You can find all three different owl types at the same location! It’s called Bear Claw, close to Manzanita Post. They will be either flying or more commonly sitting on the old houses/chimneys (of course, at nighttime). If you find two at the same time they are always two different ones, it seems! At daytime, you can find woodpeckers, nearly all song birds, ravens/crows, hawks, pheasants, vultures… plus on the ground bears, wolves, coyotes, deer/elk and much more. Just sleep at your portable camp or save, quit to menu, continue, to cycle through the animal spawns.

The below Animal List is in the same order as the in-game compendium (row by row)! This way, if you have a blank spot in the Compendium it’s easy to find what you’re missing.

Searching for a specific animal name? If you already know what your missing animal is called, press CTRL + F on your keyboard to use your browsers search function on this page (works on PC only). You can also enlarge the images by clicking on them so that the red marker is easier to see.

I killed the legendary fox as shown on my map, but not in the compendium. Is this glitch preventing me from completing anything… like the trophy?

This sounds like a bug. It needs to show up in compendium as far as I know. Try killing it again to see if it registers then.

I cannot get a moose to redrawn. I killed one back during the story with Arthur. I’m trying to complete the trapper items. I have spent forever exactly where the moose is supposed to be. Do you have any tips?

Just a heads up, the Carolina Parakeet is NOT needed for the Zoologist and Skin Deep trophies. I managed to get both trophies in Chapter 4, without ever encountering this bird.

Head over to where the saint Denis camp is/was, from there head west towards the broken building next to civil war field. You need to head south, Sw into the woods were it’s found crouching whole way into woods, put on cover scent and use hunters vision often. If boars are there load previous save and do again. Good luck, sometimes it takes a bit. ;)

…For ‘Zoologist’ you don’t need the Carolina parakeet (which only gives an unnecessary quest completion, a compendium entry, and a journal sketch – no percentage contribution or trophy/achievement), none of the Legendary Animals, none of the endemic Guarma animals, nor a dog from the Epilogue.
