6 Star raids are the end game activity of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. They offer the highest chance for Herba Mystica and other rewards. However, they require some preparation to unlock. This guide will show you not only how to unlock them but a couple of Pokemon that will be able to be used to complete them on your own.
Unlocking 6 and 7 Star Raids:
Once you have completed the game you might want to take on some raids for the challenge or because you need Herba Mystica to shiny hunt, or you may want to take on 7 star event raids when they are offered. To actually unlock them you will need to complete a couple of steps:
- Complete the game in its entirety. You will want to have completed all 3 branches of the game. Taking out the Star bases and boss, taking out the Elite 4 and Completing Area Zero. After doing the 3 story branches go to the Poco Path Lighthouse in South Province (Area One), where you went during the Prologue at the start of the game. After a cutscene and a fight you can now access the Great Crater of Paldea from its north-west side, through West Province (Area Three), where the purple-colored section is on the map adjacent to the crater. Finish the Crater area (Area Zero).
- Defeat All 8 Gym Leaders again to unlock the Ace Cup (see Gym Leader Locations).
- Complete the Ace Cup Tournament.
- Once the Ace Cup Tournament is complete you will be given a task by Jacq to do research on Raid Dens throughout Paldea. He will want you to complete 10 5 star raid dens. This can be done offline or online. There is no tracking for this so you will have to keep track of raid den completions yourself.
- Once you have completed all 10 of the 5 star raid dens you will get a call from Jacq warning you that there is a new raid den giving off tremendous energy and he recommends you stay away from them.
Once you get that call you will be able to see 6 and 7 star raids on the map:
You will only be able to see one 6 star raid on your map each day but you can change the date on your Nintendo Switch settings menu to change the console date and immediately spawn a new 6 star raid.
Completing 6-star Raids Solo:
Now that you have unlocked 6 star raids you will have to know how to defeat them alone. Below are a couple strategies you can use to complete 6 star raids easily:
Azumarril Raid:
For this type of raid you will be able to complete the following types of raids solo:
- Fighting
- Dragon
- Dark
You will also stand a fair chance against the following but might be a little harder:
- Normal
- Water
- Ground
- Flying
- Psychic
- Bug
- Rock
- Ice
- Ghost
- Fairy
Avoid raids with Pokemon of the following Tera or regular typing:
- Fire
- Grass
- Electric
- Poison
- Steel
For this method to work you will want the Ability ‘Huge Power’ on your Level 100 Azumarril. There are only 2 moves it will need to learn, Play Rough and Belly Drum. You are also going to want the Tera type to be Fairy. You will want the Azumarril to be holding a Shell Bell to heal itself back up. Start off with Belly Drum turn 1 and use the rest of the turns to use Play Rough. If the Raid Pokemon removes stats and buffs from you simply Belly Drum again afterward and continue the Play Rough.
To get Azumarril to learn Belly Drum you will need to have a free move slot by deleting a move in its summary and giving it a Mirror Herb sold by Delibirds Presents in Mesagoza. Put the Azumarril and a Pokemon that knows Belly Drum in your party and picnic. Give it a moment and you can check your Azumarril to make sure it learned the move.
You will want your Azumarril to not only be level 100 but also to have the Adament Nature (can be given an Adament Mint if not the correct nature). You will want to use Bottle caps to raise its IVs in Attack, HP and both Defenses. Then you are going to want to give Azumarril 26 HP Ups and 26 Proteins.
Iron Hands Raid:
For this type of raid you will be able to complete the following types of raids solo:
- Normal
- Ice
- Rock
- Dark
- Steel
You will also stand a fair chance against the following but might be a little harder:
- Fire
- Water
- Grass
- Electric
- Fighting
- Dragon
- Flying
- Ground
Avoid raids with Pokemon of the following Tera or regular typing:
- Poison
- Psychic
- Bug
- Fairy
For this you are going to want a Fighting Tera Type Iron Hands. This Pokemon is exclusive to Violet. As a Scarlet player you must get it from trading with a Violet player. It is one of the best raid Pokemon in the game. Once you have yourself an Iron Hands you will need to get it to Level 100 and let it learn Belly Drum at Level 84 and Thunderpunch at Level 21. Once you have those two moves use TM 73 Drain Punch. For this you will need to use Belly Drum on turn 1 and then use Drain Punch each turn to heal yourself back up while holding a Booster Energy or Punching Glove. Using a Shell Bell and Thunderpunch will also be effective against certain raids like Water of Flying. If the raid Pokemon nullifies stat changes on your side, use Belly Drum again and continue Drain/Thunderpunching.
You will want your Iron Hands to not only be level 100 but also to have the Adament Nature (can be given an Adament Mint if not the correct nature). You will want to use Bottle caps to raise its IVs in Attack, HP and both Defenses. Then you are going to want to give Iron Hands 26 HP Ups and 26 Proteins.
Other options:
While the two options above are potentially the best they won’t cover all types of Pokemon you come across so here are a few other really good contenders for raiding but will have a harder time winning solo:
- Miraidon
- Koraidon
- Ceruledge
- Flutter Mane
- Gholdengo
- Tinkaton
- Kingambit
