Outlast 2 contains 50 video recording locations. For these collectibles you must film certain events with the camera. A red ring will show up in the middle of the screen. Let the ring fill up to unlock the recording. Nothing is missable, you can go back via chapter select and load an existing save to import all collectibles you have found. The collectible tracker in this game is excellent – you can sort everything in chronological order, by collectible type, or by chapter. This makes it very easy to find a missing collectible. Do not collect these on insane difficulty because if you die it resets your progress in this mode. The guide below shows all recording locations in chronological order with text and videos.
Listening to the recordings reveals some interesting story aspects, so they help to understand what’s going on. Finding all recordings unlocks “The Apostle Paul” trophy or achievement.
Chapter: Genesis
Objective: Find Lynn
Recording #1 – The Jane Doe Story Part 1:
The first Outlast 2 recording locations is unmissable. You must film Lynn during the helicopter ride (which happens automatically at the start of the game).
Recording #2 – The Jane Doe Story Part 2:
Same as before, this is an unmissable video capture in the helicopter.
Recording #3 – The Wreckage:
After the helicopter crash, film the burning helicopter for a few seconds to unlock the first recording. As with all the other recordings you must aim your camcorder at the point of interest for a few seconds to see a red circle filling up in the middle of the screen. When the circle is full the recording is complete.
Recording #4 – The Crucified Pilot:
Immediately after the burning helicopter you go down a dark path. There’s a corpse hanging on a tree by a campfire that you record.
Recording #5 – The Impossible Town:
Shortly after the last recording you will slide down a dark path and see a village in front of you. Aim the camcorder at the village.
Recording #6 – Remembering the Lost:
A little further into the village, after going past a barn with a dead cow on the floor you’ll come through a house with an open window that you can climb through. Before climbing through this window there’s a fence that can be recorded.
Recording #7 – The Compound:
After escaping the witch you’ll go through a barn and then a village with some enemies. After the village you have to walk up a little hill and can film a church in the distance which counts as recording location #7.
Objective: Find a way out of here
Recording #8 – Jessica’s Suicide Note:
After reuniting with Lynn and escaping the cultists you are teleported into a school building. In the second class room make a recording of the blackboard.
Objective: Get to the chapel
Recording #9 – Interrogation:
After the witch murders the peasant who took you in, film his corpse.
Recording #10 – Crucified Heretics:
After the last video recording you must enter a rocky area and walk through some waist-heigh water. After leaving the water there are some burning trees up the hill that can be filmed.
Recording #11 – Marta:
This is very easy to miss! Immediately after the last video recording there are two cornfields. At the end is a gate and behind it the witch can be seen dragging a dead heretic behind her. You must film how she is dragging away the heretic. This is a timed event! Always aim the camcorder at the witch and stand close to the gate. Also pick up the nearby document collectible before going to the cornfields.
Objective: Find a path to the village
Recording #12 – Dead Birds:
After going through the cornfields and the barn, a flash of light will kill all the birds (unmissable story event). Record the dead birds on video.
Recording #13 – Cavern Temple:
After you slide down a cave there’s a temple entrance that can be filmed.
Objective: Get to the chapel
Recording #14 – New Temple Gate:
After leaving the cave from the last recording you can film a village in the distance.
Objective: Investigate the Well
Recording #15 – Temple Gate:
After using the elevator film the sign in front of you.
Objective: Find a way out of here
Recording #16 – Hanged Jessica:
When you are trapped in the school dream you’ll eventually come to a well-lit corridor with a girl hanging from the ceiling, film her. This is easily missable – if you get too close to the hanged girl she will disappear so keep your distance!
Objective: Get to the Chapel
Recording #17 – The Show Room:
After leaving the school and escaping the cultists you’ll come to a cellar with a woman chained to a bed. Filming her counts as a recording collectible. If you always keep the camera equipped it will automatically start the recording when entering the room.
Recording #18 – Why You Have to Die:
After being chased by cultists for the second time you’ll reach the basement of a church. Go upstairs and film the text on the blackboard.
Recording #19 – The Chapel:
After escaping the witch and climbing over the fence you’ll reach the chapel. Film it from outside.
Objective: Find a path to the mine
Recording #20 – In the chapel you will witness a torture scene.
After it’s over capture the victims on video.
Recording #21 – The Abattoir:
After escaping the water mill you’ll encounter the witch again – she is patrolling the area. In order to proceed you must obtain a hook from a slaughterhouse. Film the cadavers inside the slaughterhousee.
Objective: Find a way out of here
Recording #22 – A Game of Hangman:
As soon as the next school dream starts you’ll see a drawing of a hanged man on a wall. Film this to earn a recording collectible (the dream triggers automatically and is unmissable).
Chapter: Job
Objective: Cross the bridge
Recording #23 – Road to the Old Mine:
After the school dream you’ll be teleported to the top of a hill. Simply aim your camera at the valley or the mountains in the distance to capture a video.
Recording #24 – The Locusts:
While crossing the bridge an insect swarm will fly towards you, film it.
Objective: Find a different path to the mine
Recording #25 – Sickness Here, God Bless:
A little while after your crash landing (falling off the bridge) you’ll have to crawl through a tree trunk (unmissable story part). Afterwards follow the creek — at the end there’s a fence that counts as a recording collectible.
Recording #26 – The Symblote:
After making your way through the settlement of sick miners there’s a fence on the right side (it’s immediately after a campfire with two sick miners near it). Behind the fence a new type of archer enemy can be seen killing someone. This is a timed event and highly missable! If the archer walks away it cancels the video capture.

Recording #27 – A Sickness in St. Sybil:
This recording takes place during a school dream. After investigating a computer you must exit the hallway. There will be blood on the walls and a girl at the end of the hallway, film all of it.

Recording #28 – Ruptures:
This is in the next school dream, after surviving the crucifixion. In the hallway with the lockers there’s a room with a flickering blue light. Go inside and have your camcorder ready. The walls will get bloody, take a video of it. Reminder: this is not the same dream where recording #27 was found. It’s quite a bit later.
Objective: Find a different path to the mine
Recording #29 – The Trap:
After being buried alive make a movie of the wire fence that you were caught in. It’s very close to your casket.
Recording #30 – The Hanged Man:
Leave the area of the last recording and you’ll reach a camp. Go past the camp and watch out for a fence. Behind the fence is a hanged man that counts as a recording collectible.
Recording #31 – Til Death do us Part:
This is after retrieving the missing rope. When you use the rope to reach the area below, immediately take out your camera and film the dead enemies who fell down with you.

Recording #32 – Roots and Branches:
Inside the school, after using the hatch in the yard you’ll end up inside the cafeteria. In the cafeteria there’s a drawing of a tree on the wall, film it. This is a timed event so keep your camera ready.
Chapter: Lamentations
Objective: Find a way to cross the lake
Recording #33 – Beach Heads:
When you reach the lake there are some pikes by the water (between the left and middle dock).
Recording #34 – Distant Towers:
Same area, after going through the buildings you must go up a long flight of stairs. From here you can film a huge building in the distance where a bright light is coming from (other end of the lake).
Recording #35 – Help:
Very shortly after the last recording you jump down some rocks and come to another beach with two houses. At the beach, on the right side, someone tried to put together a sign in the sand that says “HELP”, film this.
Objective: Follow the river
Recording #36 – Dead Fish:
While paddling across the river with the raft there will be a flash of light and all the fish die. Film the dead fish.
Recording #37 – Floaters:
There are lots of dead people floating at the end of the river. You’ll come here automatically while following the river. Film the floaters.
Objective: Get back to your raft
Recording #38 – Warning:
After your raft crashes you’ll come to a campfire that is surrounded by many dead people on pikes. This is a recording location.
Objective: Find a way out of here
Recording #39 – They’re All Going to Laugh at You:
In the next school dream. Go into the girls bathroom at the start of the school sequence. There’s blood coming out of the shower, make a video recording of it.
Chapter: Judges
Objective: Find the mine entrance
Recording #40 – Rain of Blood:
Immediately after the school visit it will be raining blood outside – capture it on video.
Objective: Find a way out of here
Recording #41 – Pulse:
In the school you’ll have ot interact with some computers. After using the second computer all the screens will start to flicker, make a recording of the event.
Objective: Find a way out of here (next school sequence)
Recording #42 – I Have Lots of Friends:
This is in the next school sequence, after being hunted by some cultists in the real world. When you’re teleported to the school you’re hanging off a ledge outside a window. Climb inside and film the many hanged people over the courtyard.
Chapter: Leviticus
Objective: Find Lynn
Recording #43 – Descent:
After entering the mine (“Sancti Sepulchri” trophy / achievement unlocked) your elevator will come crashing down. After exiting the elevator turn around and record the elevator shaft on video.
Recording #44 – Skinned Man:
After climbing down the first ladder in the mines the path will split up and you can go left, right or straight ahead. Go right and you’ll see a campfire with a skinned man hanging over it.
Recording #45 – Skin Wallpaper:
Not long after the last location you’ll have to open a door (the first one you’re gonna open inside the mines). Now you’re in a long corridor with doors on either side. At the end of the corridor you must film the “skin wallpaper” (several people being stripped to the wall).
Recording #46 – The Bone Arbor:
You’ll reach a point where a man is singing a children’s song. Open the door to where the sound is coming from (you can only go in one direction so it’s unmissable). Behind that door is a campfire and two skeletons that can be recorded. You’ll automatically be looking at it when opening the door, so the easiest method is to keep the camcorder equipped at all times and you’ll get this automatically.
Chapter: Revelations
Objective: Get away from here
Recording #47 – The Storm:
This is the first collectible location in the Revelations chapter, immediately after reuniting with Lynn. Make a recording of the stormy weather.
Objective: Get to the chapel
Recording #48 – Fire in the Sky:
As you approach the chapel with Lynn, lightning will strike the earth. Film the chapel and lightning from afar.
Recording #49 – Dead Prophets:
After taking shelter in the chapel one guy will slit his throat in front of you. Record his body on video.
Recording #50 – She Will Never Die:
Exit the chapel and go to the market square. Film the corpses to obtain the final Outlast 2 Recording Collectible – The Apostle Paul Trophy / Achievement unlocked! Missed a recording location? No problem, you can mop up missing collectibles via chapter select at any time!
