Great Hornfly is a rare bug and crafting component in Monster Hunter World. It is used to craft armor pieces of the King Beetle Set for male characters and Butterfly Set for female characters.
Great Hornfly is one of the rarest items in the game.
Location:
Unlike other items, Great Hornfly is not gathered in the open world. It’s a random drop from cultivating items at the Botanist (similar to Sinister Cloth dropped from Tailraider Safaris).
The only reliable way to get it is by simultaneously cultivating a bug (preferably Bitterbug) and Honey at the Botanist in Astera. Then use the fertilizer “Summoner Jelly” on it. Go on a quest or expedition. When you return, check with the Botanist and you will have earned some honey, some Bitterbugs, and if you’re lucky a Great Hornfly. This is complete luck but the combo of Bitterbug + Honey + Summoner Jelly (Fertilizer) has the best possible odds. With this you should almost always get a Great Hornfly. It may take a few quests but it’s sure to drop soon.
There are also reports of it dropping as a mission reward from insect-killing investigations, but this is less reliable than the cultivating method. Sometimes it’s also sold by the Argosy merchant who arrives on a ship to Astera later in the game, halfway through the story.
To sum up: Cultivate Bitterbug (first slot) and Honey (second slot) at the same time and put Summoner Jelly Fertilizer on it. This will attract the Great Hornfly (not a guaranteed reward but this combo gives the very best chance possible). Check with the Botanist after every quest and you’ll get it within 1-5 quests.
