In Metaphor ReFantazio, the Redscale Dragon is an extremely powerful Superboss that can only be battled on a New Game Plus. Beating this boss unlocks the Closing the Book trophy & achievement.
How to Unlock Redscale Dragon Superboss
Redscale Dragon is only available in the second playthrough in New Game+. You can fight the Dragon by interacting with the Book of the Apocalypse in Akademia.
Access to the Boss will be permanently disabled until your next playthrough if you select Storyteller difficulty at any point, so be sure to play on Easy difficulty or harder. It’s okay if Storyteller difficulty was selected on your first playthrough.
Easy Cheese Method
If you want to do the fight as easy as possible, then you can do so pretty easily by grinding up enough Sublime Spoonfuls to make your turn virtually infinite. Using this method, you’ll only need the Protagonist and Strohl in your party, as you’ll want to maximize damage as much as possible. The strat is done at level 50, so if you decide to do the strat earlier in the game or at a lower level, you may need more Sublime Spoonfuls than the recommended amount, so just be warned of that.
Archetypes and Skill Sets
Protagonist – Prince Archetype
Inherited Skills: Front Boost, Almighty Boost, Critical Trade, Heat Up
Strohl – Royal Warrior Archetype
Inherited Skills: Front Boost, Slash Boost, Critical Trade, Heat Up
It’s still possible to do this strat earlier in the game before you have access to the Prince/Royal archetypes. Samuari is a good example of one that can replace both archetypes and can be gotten pretty early on.
Recommended Equipment
This method is very lax as if done correctly as the boss should never get a turn anyway. You’ll want at least 15-20 Sublime Spoonfuls before doing the boss fight, as well as some full MP restoring items. Below is some recommended equipment, but isn’t really necessary if you don’t have it, and will just require you to have more Sublime Spoonfuls to make up for the potential loss in damage.
- Hero’s Cuirass for the Protagonist – Gives an extra +5 to all stats.
- Reverent Crown for the Protagonist – Gives an extra Press Turn at the start of battle.
- Radiant Crystal for the Protagonist – Gives an extra +8 to all stats.
- Ame-No-Habakiri for Strohl – Gives an extra +5 Strength.
- Cardinal Dragon Armor for Strohl – Gives an extra +5 Strength and Endurance.
- Asura’s Hands for Strohl – Significantly increases Slash damage.
- Gambler’s Manual for Strohl – Doubles critical hit damage.
Redscale Dragon Superboss Fight Cheese Strategy
- Start the fight using Hero’s Cry on the Protagonist.
- Use Concentrate on Strohl.
- Use Hero’s Proving on the Protagonist.
- Use Brave Blade on Strohl (or Sublime Spoonful if you didn’t bring the Reverent Crown).
- Use a Sublime Spoonful on the Protagonist (or Royal Slash if you used it last turn).
- Use Brave Blade on Strohl.
- Use Royal Slash on the Protagonist.
- Rinse and repeat this for the entire fight, throwing in some full MP recovery items whenever necessary. Because of the way turns work in this game, you +3 attack buff will stay active the entire time.
Be aware at if you miss an attack at any point during this, you’ll lose 2 press turns which could possibly result in it being the bosses turn. You should be able to survive depending on your equipment and the level you decide to do the cheese strategy at, but it heavily depends on those factors if you’ll live or not.
Regular Method
Regular Method: Redscale Dragon Superboss Preparation
While you are on your second playthrough, be sure to grind materials and cook as many Sublime Spoonful items as you can, as these will be extremely useful for the fight. You should also consider maxing out Follower ranks once more, so you can unlock all of the Archetypes again. Once you make it to the final dungeon in the game, try to reach at least level 70.
Regular Method: Archetypes and Skill Sets
Protagonist – Prince Archetype
Inherited Skills: Slash Boost, Front Boost, Almighty Boost, Heat Up
Strohl – Royal Warrior Archetype
Inherited Skills: Slash Boost, Front Boost, Attack Lore, Heat Up
Hulkenberg – Royal Knight Archetype
Inherited Skills: Medicall, Debilitate, Dekaja (Optional if you have Dekaja items), Dekunda (Optional if you have Dekunda items)
Eupha – Royal Summoner Archetype
Inherited Skills: Pen Patra, Heat Riser (Optional), Debilitate (Optional if you equipped Mystic Crosier), Dekaja (Optional if you have Dekaja items)
Regular Method: Recommended Equipment
For the most part, you can just equip your best accessories, and auto-equip your strongest equipment, but useful and mandatory equipment is the following:
- Cardinal Dragon Armor for anyone (optional) – Nullifies Fire.
- Sunstalo Plate Armor for anyone (optional) – Resists Slash damage.
- Cardinal Dragon Robe for anyone (optional) – Nullifies Fire.
- Dragon’s Fall Sword for the Protagonist (optional) – Deals extra damage to Dragons.
- Dynastic Blade for Strohl (optional) – Deals extra Slash damage.
- Mystic Crosier for Eupha (optional, but recommended as you can spend a single turn using Summon Fury instead of using Debilitate) – Allows you to perform a Synthesis skill with 1 turn icon.
- Reverent Crown Gear for the Protagonist (Mandatory) – Adds an extra turn icon in battle.
- Knight’s Last Stand Gear for Eupha (Mandatory) – Allows you to survive with 1HP, very useful as Eupha can summon Harvest God and revive the full team with full HP.
Regular Method: Redscale Dragon Superboss Fight Strategy
Be sure not to equip any items that drain or repel certain attacks, as this will cause the Dragon to instantly Party Wipe your team. Once in battle with the Dragon, debuff the Dragon’s defense, and buff your own attack, then use your strongest attacks. You should be able to survive for the first three or so turns without issue, but the fight will get harder as it goes on. When you feel you won’t survive when the Dragon takes its next turn, use the Sublime Spoonful item when you are reduced to one turn, and you will gain four turns. You can keep using this item over and over, so keep using them, and attack the Dragon over and over so you can defeat it before it takes its next turn.

What carries over to New Game Plus? Do Archetypes and party levels not carry over?
Monomaru says
Archetype levels will carry over, but you’ll need to reach the follower ranks again to gain access to them, items also carry over, but level doesn’t.

i don’t know in detail, but if you follow the walkthrough AND loot every dungeon, most importantly from august onward, do every side quest, you are golden! i thought my self i was missing ame-no-habakiri, but i purified a pink greatsword and tada there it was.
Rizky says
How do you grind that many spoonfuls?
Lord of the lake is only gained by Mouse Tail baits and they’re pretty hard to come by.
ObsiEez says
You can get 2x Tail Bait sometimes when cleaning on the Gauntlet Runner. You can keep saving and reloading until you get 2
Mitsuda says
Even though, that’s not enough to farm 15 to 20 of them.
How would you do it?
Mitsuda says
Or is it repeatable?
Rizky says
I don’t know how to reply to ObsiEez but thank you. Is there a great way to farm gauntlet shrooms? Can we use the reload trick to spawn them in the pantry?
Alex says
You can buy infinite Tail Baits from the boy in Martira.

I’ve used the exact step up in the guide and even tried changing hulkenberg’s class to remove any chance of here deflecting an attack and I just don’t why but the boss is using I’ll will every time I get it below half health
Dawn says
Is there any way to do this that doesn’t involve playing through almost the whole game a second time? It’s a very long game…
Mr Blue says
Just completed this, using the “cheese” strat, (on Easy because I’m not about to play through the whole thing for one boss on a hard difficulty) so I can add my findings.
Gauntlet shrooms were the bottleneck for making more Sublime Spoonfuls. However, what you get each day is not static from the pantry. If you want to min/max, just reload until you get them. Tail Bait I got from cleaning the storage room over and over at the tail end of my first playthrough, and throughout my second.
The answers for fishing are NOT random. They are “Think like a fish”, “Thrash and splash”, and “Give in to naptime”.
15-20 Sublime Spoonfuls is about accurate. I used probably about 15, although I was level 86 when I made my attempt. Only used 1 MP restore on the main character. I also used Dynastic Blade on Strohl, because I didn’t see much reason not to (though his damage was still lacking imo), and the sword that does extra damage to dragons for the main character. I recommend using all your points to put in the protagonists Strength and Agility on the second playthrough, since that’s all you’ll be needing for this fight.
The other big tip is when you go to cook, cook 1 at a time, because you will always get a bonus 1. So if you cook 8 in one go, you’ll get 1 bonus from it because of the social link, but if you cook 1 eight different times… you’ll get 16. So, spread it out over the course of your playthroughs to get more Sublime Spoonfuls.
Also using the night time on the Runner to use bath salts would be another recommendation, especially the one that gives you strength or agility, then you should have enough points by the end to max out both.
Also, use Strohl’s ability Unwavering Blade to up his chance to hit, because you’d rather him not miss.
Just my thoughts.
Solaris W says
If you max out heismay’s Royal archetype, he gets the passive that if he is is missed by an enemy attack, ht removes all the turn icons from the enemy. That was super helpful for the true ending boss so im banking on it for this bos too

Just soloed the boss with protagonist at level 46 and 8 Sublime Spoonfuls (I carried 2 from first playthrough). As I played through NG+, I added almost every skill point on Magic. Then for the boss, I used Magic Seeker with King’s Sovereignty, Hero’s Cuirass, Yggdrasil Crown and Narcissus Brooch and inherited skills Flawless, Magic Circle, Shield Blessing and Frigid Fortress Tactic.
Started the battle and used sublime spoonful, then 2 almighty golden stews to max attack, then sublime again and 3 evil eye talismans to completely debuff the boss. After that just kept using frigid fortress and sublime for the win. Only needed to refill MP once after I used the last sublime spoonful.
EE says
This should be the default cheese strategy! Just did it today and it worked like a charm!
I did it at level 38 with 9 sublime spoonfuls and maxed Seeker. Put ALL level up points in magic and used the washing machine on the Gauntlet Runner to improve MP and bath salts to improve magic stats. Still had to level up some follower ranks to get the ultimate Seeker but I only had to play for around 12 hours to get everything ready (had already gotten all the materials and equipment on NG).
