Introduction

Welcome to the Metal Gear Solid (PS4/PS5 Master Collection) Trophy Guide! For the first time ever, Metal Gear Solid has received a trophy list through the Master Collection on PS4 and PS5. The game is not a remaster of any kind, it is just a straight port of the PS1 version of the game, so do not set your hopes too high for updated graphics or better controls – you are playing a PS1 game with PS1 controls and outdated graphics. Nevertheless, the game is still a blast and an absolute classic in the stealth genre with a great story behind it.

What about the trophies? Well, it is definitely easier than MGS2 for sure, since MGS2 Big Boss Rank is notoriously unforgiving. In MGS1 you can make use of Stealth and Bandana and also take advantage of the option to download the Japanese Version of the game, which allows you to earn the Fox/Big Boss Rank on normal difficulty without having to play on hard difficulty (thus reducing the platinum difficulty overall).

Step 1 (OPTIONAL): Finish the game once to familiarize with it (skip to Step 2 if you know the game already and only care about the trophies)

Finish the game once in a language you understand if this is your very first time playing Metal Gear Solid. Why? The guide takes advantage of the Japanese version of the game and if you are not able to understand Japanese you will have serious trouble understanding what to do in the game. Many times you will be informed in dialogues what you are supposed to do, since some progression in the game is purposefully complicated. Sometimes you have to call a specific person, perform a specific action or backtrack to a certain location, which you will be informed about on the CODEC, but you will not be able to understand it if you don’t understand the language output. This will make you run around the map for ages not knowing what to do and would be frustrating, making your first playthrough less fun. If you already know the game inside out from PS1, you can ignore this step and continue with step 2 immediately.

Step 2: Download the Japanese Version of the game and finish it to obtain the Stealth Camouflage

When choosing the version of the game you can go to the Japanese Language which will direct you to the PS Store where you can download the Japanese Version of the game for free. Do this, since it will make your life easier with the platinum. You don’t need a Japanese PSN account for this, it will work regardless of what PSN Store region your account is and it’s for free. The Japanese Version does not require you to play on the Hard/Extreme Difficulty in order to unlock the Fox/Big Boss codename. Finish the game to unlock most of the trophies and during a torture sequence you can either give up or resist for a long time. Giving up will grant you the Stealth Camo at the end of the game, while resisting will grant you the Bandana for unlimited Ammo. Make a manual savefile after beating Sniper Wolf for the first time, since here you can decide if you want to tackle the Fox/Big Boss rank with just stealth or with both Stealth and Bandana.

IMPORTANT INFO: It is not MGS INTEGRAL! Integral is available from the start and you do not have to download it. You have to choose the main standard MGS game and there when it asks you which language you want, scroll down to japanese and download it there! MGS Integral released later and does not let you take advantage of easier difficulty for FOX rank.

Step 3 (OPTIONAL): Finish the game once more to unlock the Bandana (you can unlock it later as well, it depends on your confidence about the Fox Rank)

If you prefer not to tackle Fox codename with just stealth, do a New Game+ run with stealth and this time do the torture sequence till the end to unlock the Bandana at the end. Now you can tackle the Fox rank with both Bandana and Stealth Camo. If you decide to tackle it without the Bandana, skip to Step 4 and ignore Step 3. It comes down to personal preference and your prior knowledge of the game, spend some extra time to make it easier or save some time but have it be more difficult.

Step 4: Finish the game with Fox Rank

In order to finish the game with the Fox Rank you will have to do the following:

  • Beat the game in 3 hours
  • Beat the game with no continues
  • Have no more than 4 alerts
  • Have no more than 25 kills (Bosses do not count)
  • Use no more than 1 Ration
  • Save no more than 80 times (saving wastes time each time anyway)

Use stealth to breeze through the majority of the game and save before the bosses. Defeating a boss will replenish your health so you do not need to spend a Ration to heal. See the trophy Elite Trophy for more tips.

Step 5 (OPTIONAL): Get the Bandana

If you didn’t get the Bandana before your Fox rank, simply reload the save you created after defeating Sniper Wolf and finish it from there with enduring the torture to get the Bandana. You can do it before or after your Fox rank, it just depends on your prior knowledge of the game.

Step 6: Finish all VR Missions

The only thing left to do is finish the VR Missions. There are 300 of them. Most of them are easy, some are tricky but it is just trial and error. Compared to MGS2 VR missions this is easier. Make sure to play the SPECIAL MISSIONS version of the game in order to unlock the trophy. Also for some reason the US-Version of the game is bugged out and will not ulock the trophy. You can, however, download the European version of the SPECIAL MISSIONS in the menu to avoid this.

trophy Decked Out and trophy Dress for the Job are 2 trophies that contradict each other. Earning one of them will make obtaining the other one impossible in the same playthrough. In order to obtain the bandana you will have to withstand all the torture sequences in which Ocelot tortures snake and then finish the game. You will be given the Bandana by Meryl towards the end of the game. To unlock the Stealth Camo you will have to give up during the torture and towards the end of the game you will receive the Stealth Camo from Otacon.

Metal Gear Solid (PS5) Trophy Guide & Roadmap Elite
Obtain the Fox or Big Boss codename
Gold
Missable Trophy!

In order to unlock the Fox or Big Boss codename you will have to fulfill the following requirements:

  • Beat the game in 3 hours
  • Beat the game with no continues
  • Have no more than 4 alerts
  • Have no more than 25 kills (Bosses do not count)
  • Use no more than 1 Ration
  • Save no more than 80 times (saving wastes time anyway)

The difference between Fox and Big Boss rank is the difficulty you play on. They have the same requirements but Fox is awarded on Hard while Big Boss is awarded on Extreme. Playing on the Japanese version lets you play for the rank on a normal difficulty, so do it on the Japanese version for an easier time.

General Tips:

  • For an easier time do it on your third playthrough, unlock the Stealth Camo and Bandana on your previous runs.
  • Use Stealth Camo all the time and switch to Bandana for bosses. Stealth Camo makes you invisible and Bandana grants you infinite Ammo.
  • Defeating a boss will replenish your health.
  • Give up during the torture on your speedrun since it obviously saves time.
  • Use your grenades in a smart way. Stun Grenades for Ocelot, Chaff Grenades for the Tank, Chaff Grenades for Metal Gear REX, Stun Grenades for Staircase run, 2nd Phase of REX.
  • Beat the Ninja in hand combat, since you can basically just wait for his attacks and then beat him up every time.
  • You can defeat Sniper Wolf second fight very easily by camping at your end of the map and shooting Nikita missiles from the cover to ambush her, no need for a Sniper fight here.
  • Save before each boss (you have 80 saves free, so go crazy but not too crazy since saving takes like 20 seconds each time)
Metal Gear Solid (PS5) Trophy Guide & Roadmap Practice Makes Perfect
Complete all VR training missions
Gold
Complete all VR missions in the VR mission game in the game selection. It is basically trial and error. Most of the challenges are easy, some are tricky but they are not as punishing as the VR missions in games like MGS2 or MG Rising. Those challenges test your knowledge of weapons and movement, sometimes they are like puzzles.

Make sure to play the SPECIAL MISSIONS version of the game in order to unlock the trophy. Also for some reason the US-Version of the game is bugged out and will not ulock the trophy. You can, however, download the European version of the SPECIAL MISSIONS in the menu to avoid this.

Metal Gear Solid (PS5) Trophy Guide & Roadmap Ghostly Encounter
Exorcise a ghost photo
Gold
Missable Trophy!

The trophy is technically missable. You can miss getting the camera in your first playthrough but you will be awarded the camera for finishing the game so you can easily get it in your second run as well.

You can unlock the camera as soon you get the Level 4 keycard but it is best to get it while you backtrack to the Tank Hangar B2 to get the Sniper Rifle. In B2 head back down to the room where you fought Ocelot and head down again through the hole in the wall you blasted to get in here in the first place. From here head right and blast another wall. There in one of the rooms in the corridor monitored by 2 turret cameras you can find your own camera. Now you have to take a picture of a ghost.

You can find MANY places of a ghost but you will not see them immediately. You will have to take the picture and then in the Main Menu of the game, go to Special -> Album and watch your pictures there. If you took a photo of a ghost you will see in the picture and there will be an option to exorcise it. A good spot for a picture is in the left bathroom next to the hallway that leads to Psycho Mantis room. In there take a picture of the wall where the guard is urinating. Take the picture from multiple angles since sometimes the game is not accepting the ghost picture properly.

So when you say the Japanese version do you just mean the Integral Version with the Japanese audio or can we do it with English as well?

I have not mentioned Intergral even once in the guide so people do not play it, yet some apparently do.

You need to play the regular game and there in the language selection go to JAPANESE and download the game there.

Thank you for the guide! Just one question, are we completely sure that there is a limit of 80 saves for the Fox Rank? I said this because there was a lot of discussion regarding this particular constrain.

At least that has been said since the beginning of time… I mean who in their right mind will save that many times anyway? Not even worth testing but better be safe than sorry I guess.

If I chose the non-Japanese version can I finish the game in either difficulty to obtain stealth and/or bandana then switch to Hard/Veteran with that same save file?

Items are locked to the difficulty save file. So you unlock on normal first then they are unlocked for normal only. You would have to create separate difficulty files and collect the times on that specific difficulty

For the trophy “Practice Makes Perfect” it seems a number of people are saying if you do the 300 missions in the ‘VR MISSIONS’ game, the trophy doesn’t pop up but if you do those 300 missions in the ‘SPECIAL MISSIONS’ game it does. Might be worth pointing out or testing. Anyone else having that issue?

Hi! To make the “Elite” Trophy marginally easier, you can play Japanese version of the game, as this only features the one (easy) difficulty setting, and again allows the use of previously unlocked special items,

Hope this helps and good luck to everyone trying for this trophy.

    IMPORTANT ABOUT “PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT”

Many users are reporting they completed 300 VR missions under the 2nd game option “VR Missions” and did NOT unlock the trophy. I avoided that option, and instead I picked the 3rd game option “Special Missions” –> English (UK) –> Download European Pack. After completing the 300 VR missions here, I successfully unlocked the trophy.

Something funny happened. I played the European version and when I scrolled through the text in the title screens in the “Special” category from the old MG1 and MG2 games. I got the Ghostly Encounter trophy at the end. Maybe someone can test that seems like a bug .

    A question.

I have finished the game 2 times on normal level.

Can I use the bandana and stealth camo that I already have, or do I have to finish it 2 more times on extreme level to get the bandana and stealth camo to help me with the Big Boss codename?

NG+ items like the Bandana and the Stealth Suit only carry over to the save and difficulty that you obtained them from. Thus, once you start a Hard/Extreme playthrough, you’ll start from scratch.

For the record tho, you can complete the game on the Japanese version that has a standard easy difficulty, and if you meet the requirements, you’ll get FOX rank. Just remember that you can’t get more than 4 alerts, as the guide says 5 and it can lead to error.

Do you need to do 2 play through a in hard and unlocking the bandana and stealth camo on those runs? Or can you do 2 runs in normal and do the 3rd in hard? As since I am not sure if the items carry on to new game and selecting hard instead of normal. Thanks

Special Items do not carry over to new games, they only carry over in new game plus (Loading your already completed save).

So you will need to do x2 play throughs, get both endings, then you’ll have Stealth and Bandana on your 3rd play through on the same save file.

You can’t do x2 play throughs on Normal and carry over special items into a new save on Hard.

You might want to add that the VR Missions trophy is currently bugged for the US version of VR Missions. Players should do the missions on either Special Missions, or if they got the Fox/Big Boss Rank through Integral, they can do it through Integral.

I added the info about the VR Missions.

Also to some of the commenters: Yes, I am aware of the big skip the game lets you do but it is really not needed for the FOX rank on the japanese version.
Also the skip requires you to do specific other steps or you might softlock yourself which will make it even more confusing.

Since the guide is text only this time around it is better to avoid the skip in the guide since it is easier to understand it in video format.

    Important note:
When the guide states (no more than 5 alerts) for the FOX/BIG BOSS codenames it’s mistaken (from my experience at least). I finished a playthrough a couple hours ago, I had 5 alerts, and the codename was TARANTULA. So, you need 4 or less alerts, not 5.

The Ghostly Encounter trophy seems to be glitched in a good way. I unlocked it in the main menu of the game before even starting my first playthrough. That’s how it works:

Start the original release version -> “Special” -> “Previous Operations”
-> Navigate through all pages of the two recaps and the trophy will pop after pressing the “Exit” option in the second recap

I was able to reproduce it on two different accounts. I’m playing the latest EU version in German (just in case that matters).

    So this trophy isn’t missable.

Sorry for late reply. When we are busy with many guides, sometimes answering comments suffers because of it.

You can save before and after bosses if it makes you feel better. Saving takes like 20 sec each time so it is not a huuuuuge time waste. I have managed to finish the game with 20 min left even though I went with the longer ending so you have a healthy time window to waste.

Just got the platinum. It was way easier than i originally thought. No way was it a 6-7/10. More like a 3. Especially if you play the Japanese version which includes the easy difficulty for the fox rank. 3 hours is also plenty of time for the fox rank. The game is incredibly easy when following a video guide

    Hello there.
I want to share a bug I’ve got but a “cool” bug…maybe. I got the trophy “Elite”by doing … anything.

For the record i’m french and played the game in French language.

When I finish the first story in normal mode (otacon side for stealth), I got the “Dress For the Job” trophy at the end. Then I saved my run in a different block, the save show in Yellow as “Dock”. AND THEN, I restared immediatly a New game from this previous save and the trophy pop up at the start when Snake swimming in the canal.

I hope someone can reproduce it and confirm what I said.

I don’t know if this was a Bug, but I earned the Ghostly Encounter Trophy when I went to the Menu of Previous Operations, where you can read the Background to Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 – Solid Snake. I simple klick on Metal Gear 2 and earned the Trophy ????

Question about the “Elite” Trophy and 5 Alerts.

I’ve completed the Japanese game once and am now going through the game the second time with the Stealth.

However, when I go through the wolf area with my stealth equipped, they see me and chase me.

Do the wolves count as “Alerts”? If so I wouldn’t know how to get through undetected. I watched one video where the player used a cardboard box to get through but the wolves were still hostile towards me.

Wolves do not count as alerts. They DO count as kills. You can get past them with stun grenades.

Struggling with fox rank. I’m hitting everything except the 25 kills. I just ran through the game and got 30 but idk who I possibly could have killed other than the forced alerts on the elevators, the Meryl fight, and the getaway turret at the end.

Some people say that you can get elite trophy by playing french version no matter on what difficulty you playing and no matter what you doing through the play through. Is that real? I found no information in the internet
