So you’re cruising around in your favorite car in Mafia 1 Remake: Definitive Edition and suddenly it won’t drive fast anymore despite there being no physical damage to it. Is it a bug you wonder? Is it a weird glitch or broken motor that makes just your car drive slowly? Fret not, you just ran out of fuel and it’s easily fixed!
What Mafia 1 never tells you is that each car has a fuel gauge and you must manually refill it. Ever wondered why there are gas stations marked on the map? That’s why. It’s not a broken car and it’s not a bug.
Another thing that the game does not tell you is that taking cars from the garage does NOT refill their fuel automatically. You have to manually refuel them. That’s why after driving a little bit the car will go slow. You can still drive but at limited speeds. Fast cars like the Flame Spear and Crazy Horse burn fuel much quicker so they will “get slow” (run out of fuel) faster.
Here’s how to fix slow cars in Mafia 1 Remake:
- When you are out of fuel drive to a gas station (marked on the world map).
- At the gas station press D-Pad DOWN and a little cutscene will play while the car is refueled.
- Now you have full fuel again. Keep an eye on the fuel gauge and repeat when necessary.
Below is the location of the fuel station closest to the garage:
And that’s how you fix “broken” out of fuel cars in Mafia 1 Remake on PS4, Xbox One, PC. Enjoy! Of course another possible cause why your car might be going slow is a heavily damaged engine with black smoke coming from it. In that case it’s from physical damage and refueling won’t fix that. Luckily, you can always grab a new car from the garage at Salieri’s bar in Little Italy.

What I find odd is you go back to the bar and get car from the garage, it’s still out of gas. And there is no pump in the hideout garage.

Exceptional observation. The game developers seem to omit such common sense. Also, if you’re requiring players to refill why aren’t you also requiring us to repair??? Why can I just pull the same car out fixed if I need a repair? Weird oversights.

It would be nice to be able to see how much gas on the Guage. Love this game tho!
