Layers of Fear (2023 PS5) contains 34 collectibles (17 Family Mementos and 17 Rat Sketches). Collecting 12 of each unlocks the trophies & achievements You might have a problem and Immortalized in my heart. This guide is updated for the Layers of Fear PS5 / Xbox Series / Steam Remaster Collection released in June 2023. This covers specifically the Painter’s Story (Layers of Fear Part 1). For the Actor’s Story refer to Layers of Fear Part 2 (Actor’s Story) Collectible Locations.
Almost all collectibles in the Painter’s Story are unmissable. Nevertheless, some of them are missable depending on specific hallways you decide to go down. At scripted points during the story, you will have to choose between a hallway drawn in green or red. If you choose green, you will be able to collect a Family Memento and if you choose red, you will be able to collect a Rat Sketch. If you go for either, you will be unable to collect the other one. As a result, you must replay certain chapters a second time in continuous order to get to the required amount for the trophies. By following this Collectible Guide, you will find all 12 Rat Sketches and be left with only 3 Family Mementos to find for when you replay the Painter’s Story. When you’re done with the Writer’s Story, restart Painter’s Story – Chapter 1 – Canvas and this time go down the green drawn hallways when given the option until you have the trophy for all 12 Family Mementos. This guide also includes the locations of the collectibles needed to unlock the secret ending. These can only be collected at the end of specific chapters once you get back to the house BEFORE you interact with the canvas to start a new chapter.
Chapter 1 – Canvas
- Rat Sketch 1 (Prosthesis Snatchers): after getting to the chair that rocks by itself, pick up the red painting from the ground and then grab this from a small table with a woman bust.
- Family Memento 1: later on you will get to a dead end with a music staff on the wall. On the cabinet.
- Family Memento 2: when you get to the room that you have to revisit 4 times, grab the bottle left of the door and place it on the tray. Then, grab the photo from the same room.
- Mirror Shards: enter the wife’s bedroom upstairs and repair the vanity’s mirror by collecrting the four broken pieces in the room.
Chapter 2 – Base
- Family Memento 3: after retrieving the key and unlocking the door, immediately to your left on a table.
- Rat Sketch 2 (Lice Mice): immediately at the next split, found inside the chest.
- Rat Sketch 3 (Canvas Crawlers): shortly after you’ll have to choose a path. Go right and you’ll find this on a chair on your left after walking through another door.
- Family Memento 4: now head to the next door and turn around to find this photo on the same chair as before. If for some reason the photo doesn’t spawn on top of the chair, go back to the main menu and hit continue.
Chapter 3 – Paint
- Rat Sketch 4 (Plague Breeders): after escaping the wife’s ghost fro the first time, open the double doors in the central hallway to find this.
- Rat Sketch 5 (Silent Floaters): you will have picked this key up from the ground after looping around the hallways with the floating telephones. Use it on the chest you will have seen earlier to pick this rat sketch up. You must pick this up in order to continue anyway.
- Family Memento 5: continue on until you can turn around. Make sure to continue on but not as far as the windowed door. Follow the hallway until you can open a door showing a hanging baby doll. Grab the key from him and then continue on until you reach a room with a chest. Open it up to get this memento.
- Rat Sketch 6 (Flapping Horror): after unlocking the door with the 385 combination, continue on until you reach a library room going downhill. At the intersection, go right to find this on a bookcase shelf.
- Family Memento 6: head downstairs into the basement and use your lantern on the sewing machine to be able to collect this.
- Bowls: at the end of Chapter 3, enter the child’s room upstairs and collect the four bowls scattered across the room. Place the bowls in front of the teddy bears on the cabinet by the bed.
Chapter 4 – Brush
- Family Memento 7: in a hallway shortly after the start of the chapter, on a small table on the right.
- Rat Sketch 7 (Fluffy Fakers): when you’re presented with the “Which dream should I chase” writing on the wall, this will eventually spawn in front of you together with an empty canvas.
Chapter 5 – Touch
- Rat Sketch 8 (Screeching Arsonists): provided, you’ve turned left during the rat chase, this is found on a tipped over cabinet after the sequence where the walls close in on you.
- Family Memento 8: after being able to leave the room with the four doors, inside a crate by the window where the moonlight shines through.
- Rat Sketch 9 (Rodent Seeds): after retrieving the key from the painting after the elevator sequence, in the same room, on a table.
- Rat Sketch 10 (Floor Creepers): this is found after the “Don’t look back sequence” where you see the shadow of the woman’s ghost reflected in the wall and the candelabras. It’s in the room with the big chain in the middle, on a barrel.
- Perfume Bottles: at the end of Chapter 5, head into the bathroom on the bottom floor and collect the three perfume bottles. Then, place them on the tray by the door.
Chapter 6 – Witness
- Family Memento 9: after getting to the room with the chain and handle, continue on and you’ll find it on a cabinet on your right.
- Rat Sketch 11 (Vermin Growth): when you see a wheelchair, go past it and continue on until you see this on a door.
- Rat Sketch 12 (Haunting Mimics): immediately after there’s a split, go right to find this in the corner. You might have a problem should pop now.
- Paintings: at the end of Chapter 6, collect the 4 paintings found across the house and hang them on the wall above the staircase. The one below the staircase must go where it says Pathetic, the one by the double doors must go where it says Disgusting, the one inside the storeroom must go where it says You’re a Failure, and the one by the piano must go where the red drawing is. Once you have placed the paintings in their corresponding spot, open the double doors and leave the house. This will unlock Letting Go. As soon as the trophy unlocks, quit out to the main menu and press continue to return to the house and be able to complete the painting for Finished It.
To be picked up when replaying the Painter’s Story
Chapter 1 – Canvas
- Family Memento 10: after getting to the chair that rocks by itself, pick up the green painting from the ground and then grab this from a small table with a woman bust.
- Rat Sketch 13 (Body Borrowers): when you get to the room that you have to revisit 4 times, grab the wine bottle right of the door and place it on the tray. Then, grab the sketch from the same room (not needed for trophies).
Chapter 4 – Brush
- Family Memento 11: when you’re presented with the “Which dream should I chase” writing on the wall, choose the green path with the house drawing and this will eventually spawn in front of you together with an empty wheelchair. To be sure, tilt your camera downwards ever so slightly to be able to see it.
Chapter 5 – Touch
- Family Memento 12: halfway through the chapter you’ll have to ride an elevator. When you enter the elevator, flip the switch to the left to go down. When you leave the elevator, check the open chest in front of you.
That’s all Collectibles in the Painter’s Story of Layers of Fear 1 (2023). Also see Layers of Fear 2 (Actor’s Story) Collectible Locations.
Bravo66 says
Family memento number 4. Do you mean the chair that the rat drawing was on because after going to the door that caught fire the chair had nothing on it
FranciRoosters says
This is before going upstairs to the room that catches fire.
Disgruntled Painter says
I agree that a photo doesn’t appear on the chair after trying to open the door that makes the stairs appear. Instead of turning right into that room with the rat drawing, turning left will lead to the same area with the photo on the chair. But for some reason it doesn’t seem to increment the trophy progress, nor does it appear on the wall of the portrait room. There’s apparently more than 12 mementos according to the wall but the game feels like a buggy mess only showing 10 on the wall when my trophy progress says 11, then when I replay chapters and recollect it never actually saves so I’m resigned to replaying the full game which is maddening.
Disgruntled Painter says
Sorry for the rant before lol but I literally just discovered the solution/fix for memento 4 not appearing. After collecting the rat photo and trying to open the door to cause the stairs to appear, pause and select back to menu then load your save. You’ll enter the same room before the stairs appear and the proper photo (different from the other one I mentioned) will appear on the chair.
Bravo66 says
Also I went back into the room after the explosion and picked up a rat drawing about tinned meat. There was a safe combination like the first game but forgot to do the safe.
Bravo66 says
At this point I’m just spamming thoughts whenever I find them. Memento 7 what previous collectible what does that even mean
FranciRoosters says
I reworded it to make it clearer.
Bravo66 says
I’ve got the trophies but a lot of this didn’t really help I thought I was losing my mind like I was in the game. The painter, the actor, the writer, the musician, the trophy hunter
FranciRoosters says
Maybe you were supposed to lose your mind just like all the characters in the stories. ?
Josh says
Where is the Rodent Seeds rat sketch?? It’s not where this guide says it is. This is the only one I need. Help!!
FranciRoosters says
That location can also spawn a Family Memento depending on what choice you made prior to entering the room with the painting with the key. In your next run, do the opposite and you’ll find the Rat Sketch.
Iridescent92 says
Hey, thanks for the guide! I did a completely blind playthrough and i think i missed a bunch. You mentioned, if u followed the guide you only need to restart chapter 1 AFTER the writers story (so after actors story/LoF 2 aswell). My question is, if i can just do a proper run based on the collectible guide as chapter select is available right now (before finishing writers story) and after a full playthrough do the missing memento run. Thanks for the help!
FranciRoosters says
You can replay the Painter’s Story as soon as you load in the Cabin at the start of the Actor’s Story. Just go back to the main menu and from there select Chapters > Painter’s Story > Chapter 1. This won’t overwrite your original save, meaning that if you hit continue you will resume from the Actor’s Story. Hope I answered your question. ?
Iridescent92 says
Okay, but when it doesnt overwrite the save and i do a collectible guide run now in painters story, im still missing the things for the normally second playthrough (3 mementos) needed right? or does it count if i do just the 2 runs via chapter select now?
Minxy says
Would anyone be able to tell me where the dut mice rat sketch is?? I can’t find it for the life of me.
Zoron says
What do I do with the painting pieces I collected? I had an icon showing I had them all In Chapter 1 and then placing the canvas (on the canvas) just started the next chapter without giving me a place to put the pieces.
