The Hunt Begins is the 8th Main Quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance (KCD). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Hunt Begins Main Quest.
During this quest you will investigate a village that was raided at night and have to gather information on the culprits.
This quest triggers automatically after completing Main Quest “The Prey”.
Go and report to Captain Bernard in the Courtyard
Head down the stairs and you will see Captain Bernard standing at the stables by the horses. He will give you your first, very own horse!
Mount your new Horse / Follow the Men to Neuhof / Go to Neuhof where Runt was seen
Mount your horse “Pebbles” and ride with Captain Bernard and his men to Neuhof. It’s just a few minutes away from Rattay. Stay close to the group.
Question the Survivors
There are 4 survivors you must question:
- Zora: the woman in the courtyard holding the corpse of her husband.
- Jakub: the guy standing in the courtyard, just opposite of Zora.
- Mark: you must exit the courtyard and walk down into the village (check your map if necessary). There are some burning houses and on the market square the remaining survivors have gathered. Mark is the one sitting down.
- Ginger: Same place as Mark, the red-haired guy standing in front of the barn in the burned-down village.
Explore the area north of the farm
The general search area will be marked on your map. There is only one road in the search area (check your map to mark it). There is blood on that road. Investigate the blood to complete this step.
Explore the clearing in the woods
The blood trail leads further into the forest. Follow the little path in the forest. There in a clearing you will encounter two enemies. Sneak up to them and press 
/ 
to knock them out. One of them is wounded and won’t fight you, but the other one is a fierce opponent so you should avoid open combat. Loot their bodies afterwards to get the quest item “Bloody hoof-pick”.
Find the owner of the hoofpick in Neuhof / Find Ginger in Neuhof
Head back to Neuhof and talk to Mark again. He will tell you the hoofpick belongs to Ginger.
Find out from Jakub where Ginger could have fled
Go back to the courtyard of Neuhof and talk to Jakub again. He tells you to check for Ginger at the Coal-Burners.
This concludes The Hunt Begins Main Quest and starts the Main Quest “Ginger in a Pickle“.

You can’t just sneak up to the bandits they hear you every time, do you have to wait until he kills his mate?

It depends on what armor you are wearing. The noise stat affects it.
If you have light armor they won’t hear until you’re close enough.
The guy on the ground won’t do anything. Only the enemy that’s standing is a threat to you, knock him out first. Be quick, just go at him full speed while crouching, he won’t have time to turn around.

He always slips out of it when I try and knockout him out from behind so this method does not work every time apparently

For me it worked fine despite having 0 stealth skill and pretty much all my stats were as low as could be at this point. The only thing I level is speech.
It might be that he has heard you sneak up on him and that’s why he gets out of it?
If you don’t care for the Merciful trophy you can simply shoot him in the head with an arrow. Arrows kill him quickly and the guy on the floor won’t fight you at all.
If you do want Merciful trophy and can’t do the takedown you must knock him out with a wooden bludgeon or in a fistfight (for which you should have decent arm armor).

Figured it out. Apparently if you hit L2 to knockout as he is standing up it doesn’t work he has to be kneeling beside his buddy for it to work.

Are you suppose to get the ginger quest right after completeing this quest? because I didn’t get anything but a quest called ruin.

Then I think you talked to Bernard and not Radzig.
Ruin is not a quest, it’s an activity given be Commander Bernard (guy who taught you sword/bow).
You must go back to Neuhof and talk to Sir Radzig, the lord from your village who you forged the sword for at the start of the game.

After completing A and B, but before doing C, go back and speak to the captain! He’ll tell one of the guards to go with you to check the woods!!
