The Die is Cast is the 20th main quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance (KCD). This walkthrough will guide you through the objectives of The Die is Cast Main Quest.
The Die is Cast triggers automatically after completing A Needle in a Haystack Main Quest.
Important: During this quest you will lose everything in your inventory, all your armor, weapons and Groschen. One way to avoid this is by putting everything in the trunk at one of your homes (e.g. Rattay Mill). Be sure to stow away your entire inventory before going on this quest! Otherwise everything will be lost but can be regained in the next main quest “Payback”! Simply hold / to store all your items in the box with one button press.
Go to the agreed place in the swamp by Sasau
Head to the marked location north-east of Sasau, in the swamps. You can cross the river in the north-east of Sasau near the two Miller’s houses.
Light a fire as a signal to the bandits
When you reach the marked spot, there are some tree trunks to sit on and in the middle some burned ground. Make a fire in the middle of this “camp” to trigger a cutscene (see screenshot below):
After the cutscene the bandits will talk to you. Depending on how you solved the previous quest (killed Pious/arrested him/let him go), there will be different possible dialogues.
Assuming you already left all your stuff in the trunk of your home (as instructed above), there won’t be any talking at all. They will just attack you because you have no proof of Pious’ death.
If the bandits do give you a chance to answer, simply pick “He had nothing on him!”. Then they will attack you.
Call your horse and ride off into the distance. Don’t kill them if you care for the “Merciful” trophy/achievement. This completes the objective.
Alternate paths: If you killed and looted Pious you can give the bandits proof, or if you brought a lot of Groschen you can pay them off (but they will take half your coins, so if you have 10,000 Groschen they take 5000 from you). Neither of these options is necessary nor recommended. I’m going to assume you don’t give them anything and ride away on your horse. Now we have to find their hideout on our own, but this Walkthrough has you covered. Continue with the next objective for the bandit’s encampment location.
Find a clue leading to the bandits’ encampment / Go to Vranik and find out the foe’s numbers and plans
Final Warning: Before you proceed you have to store ALL your things in a chest at home or they will be lost! One such storage chest is in Rattay Mill next to your bed or you can buy a room at a lodging to unlock a shared chest there. After entering the bandit encampment there is no way to go back. They will capture you and take all of your gear and money and there’s no way to avoid this. When you’re at your box, hold / to put away ALL things with one button press. Be sure to also stow away things your horse is carrying, armor/weapons you have equipped and all your Groschen (found under “Other” items). If you don’t do this everything will be lost but you can get it back during the next main quest “Payback”.
The bandit’s encampment location is in the south-west of the map. When you head up the steep hill south of Sasau you will reach it. The location is called “Vranik” and gets marked as a fast travel point on the map. Check the map below for the exact location (circled red):
Go to the main gate of Vranik by the fast travel point and interact with the door. A guard will ask what you want, pick these dialogues:
- I want to go inside
- [Speech-Persuasion] I bring an urgent message! (he has only level 2 speech stat).
He will now let you inside, even if you don’t know the passcode.
(Optional) Scout out the camp and the enemy forces
Doing this is recommended as it gives info for the siege later.
Before talking to Erik, go around the camp and look at the soldiers & tents. You’ll hear Henry making some audio comments. Walk around the camp until this objective is complete. Most of the info is gathered at the back of the camp (low walls, quality tents, many soldiers). When this objective is done go to Erik.
Report to Erik in the camp
Erik is marked on the map, in the big building uphill. Talk to him. Say “I know how to use a sword” and he’ll tell you to train with the combat master.
Go and see Combat Master Vanyek
He’s down in the camp, marked on the map. If you remember, he was the guy who gave you sword lessons back in Skalitz. When talking to him pick “I don’t know you” and he won’t recognize you. Fight him in a little duel. Just let him defeat you, it doesn’t matter. He won’t kill you and your health regenerates afterwards. Now you must talk to Erik again.
Go back to Erik
Head back to Erik. A cutscene will play when entering his building.
At this point you will lose everything in your inventory – all your Groschen, armor, weapons etc.
If you stowed it away in the chest at your home you can retrieve it later (after the quest). If the bandits did take your inventory, you can get it back during the next main quest “Payback” after conquering the bandit camp.
Escape from the encampment / Meet with Zbyshek
After the cutscene, an old acquaintance will come to your help (Zbyshek, the guy who didn’t want to give you a spade in Skalitz). Exhaust all dialogues and then pick “Let’s go, then.” to accept his help.
Now you must escape the camp. Simply run to the marker on your map. There’s a low wall at the waypoint marker and you can press / to jump over it. Don’t bother sneaking, the enemies will hunt you down when jumping over the wall either way.
After making it over the wall, turn 90° to the right and walk downhill in the direction of the next mission marker. Don’t run straight down the hill, you’ll fall and die. Walk sideways along the cliff or slightly diagonally in the direction of the marker. You’ll automatically lose the enemies, they can’t follow you downhill (because it’s too steep). It’s hard to see in the dark and you must proceed with caution. One wrong step and you might slide down the mountain and die. It’s better to walk than to run. Also bump up the brightness in the game settings/screen brightness to see more easily in the dark. Once you reach the mission marker a talk with Zbyshek triggers.
Pick dialogue:
- A deal’s a deal.
A cutscene will play and you are brought back to Sir Radzig automatically.
Go and report to Rattay
You are brought back to Rattay automatically. When talking to Radzig, pick dialogue “He deserves a reward. He saved my life” to save Zbyshek.
This concludes The Die is Cast Main Quest and triggers “Payback”.

” During this quest you will lose everything in your inventory, all your armor, weapons and Groschen”.
BULSHIT! Sometimes when i read some walkthrough or watch youtube I have the impression that people do not think anymore when they play games, or they only look for bugs and cheats to finish game fast and easy.
But if you think a bit then you shoud say ” do devs want me to lose all my gear ?.. ”
NO!! there have to be way then. You know where your gear is but doors are close SO THINK, you need lockpicks!.
When you open door go left ( be careful there is guard so let him go away first) there is wooden hut get in to (I know its dark) in left corner you can find chest, open it inside you will have lockpicks. Now go and open doors to erik room ( lock is easy and room is empty) there is chest you have to lockpick ( hard one ) and your gear is inside.
Or
Sometime one archer guard go to erik room and open it ( I dont know if its not bug) but sill you will need lockpick to open chest.
Or
maybe someone has a keys and you can find them
PowerPyx says
There is no need for any of that, your method is way too hard.
Just play the next quest and you’ll get all your items back. It’s literally a main objective, no need to pick any locks or whatever (which many people struggle with in this game and odds are many who follow this walkthrough will not have hard lockpicking unlocked).
What I wrote is correct and important to point out, I don’t see the problem here. Plus it’s way easier and the best/safest option to store your items beforehand.
Anon says
Or just put all your items in the chest where you get the lockpicks?
Novice says
Anon’s got the right idea here lol. I put my stuff in the unlocked chest near where I was beaten up. It helps a lot.
Nate says
The key to Erik’s trunk is under the little barrel of ale on his table.
Housukoira says
I had pretty good fighting skills at this point of the game so I just killed the guards (first one I knocked down and killed him with his own weapon) until I found some lockpics. I also killed half of the camp, but unfortunately there were some characters that belongs to quest lines so they couldn’t be killed… yet they were allowed to attack me. Because I had all my items back and couldn’t get access to a horse I had lot of overweight and couldn’t escape these story characters. I were forced to load the game, leave some of my items behind (I didn’t need them, could have sold them but I already had 21k groshens).
Jordan says
There literally a key on the desk. Just pick it up, open the chest and get all your gear back.
Salazar says
Welleger that is so dumb and unnecessary -_- are you stupid? Doing all that bullshit work to retrieve your gear? where you could have just stored it somewhere before the start of the mission -_- why would we do all that dumb work? We are not dumb like you -_-
James says
The speech for the guard is also incorrect. He has an 11 on our end.
PowerPyx says
Which guard is that? The one at the gate only has speech level 2 in my game.
Ratel says
I maybe encounterd a gamebreaking bug on this quest.
Upon entering Vranik, Eriks questmarker is in the Sasau Monastery.
Checked the whole camp. No Erik there. Waiting helped zero. Reloading and restarting the game helped neither.
Jake says
ERIK’S TRUNK KEYS ARE UNDERNEATH THE MEAD KEG ON HIS TABLE BESIDE THE CHEST YOUR GEAR IS IN.
Aegon says
Escape from the encampment.
I knock out the guards patrolling around the Chemin de ronde. And after jumping over the low wall Not a single enemy hunt me down.
M.O.A.B. says
you can find all ur gear in erics trunk. before leaving the camp [if u killed all before going to eric] u can find 2 more bandits left. one at the gate and one on the wall. kill the guy at the wall. get his lockpick. break in erics office and unlock the trunk. All ur stuff is in there!
Flak says
Yes, like Nest of Vipers, you can kill everyone here, but look out for Vanyek since he is essential and cannot be killed. If you have Revenant perk, that is going to be much easier, if not, you need to loot the chest on the barn just across where you started to get some healing potions. Then you need to choke the bandit that comes to your area, he has good gear so you can then use it to defeat the 3 bandits by the campfire. Get a lockpick from them and get your gear back from the camp along with extra gear (Raven’s Beak and a bow) from the other chest. Then you can go crazy like Samson with the rest of the camp.
Dolphin Lundgren says
I was experiencing a reoccurring software crash (PS4 PRO) after the cutscenes at Rattay. Playing again from previous savefiles did not help this time. Eventually I was able to avoid the crash by not meeting Zbyshek, but just running away from the mission marker straight to the forest. After a while the screen went black and the Rattay cutscenes begun. Now my savefile is working again!
Noenteke says
I found the key to the trunk on the table
Padalden says
(Smfh) how many times does it really need to be said. And if you made a comment you probably also read the other comments and had seen the other like seven mentions that theres a key under the leg (8 times).
Anyways
I only came here to find out what the message regarding the dismissal of quests once you get near the entrance vranikis about?
Also I just want to add that the bag of coins the are referring to that pious or whatever his name is stole is in a treasure you can locate in the river near the monastary. Its seperate from the other 25 plus the other 5 ancient ones. You will find a peice of parchment called jotted or scribbled note or something like that in the room between the abbotts and the priors room with the square table with 4 chairs. It can be gotten to through the library or the overseers office. Rather it’s right next to the “abbotts notes on the recruits.” On a little table between the stands. That’s what leads you to his stash. Its literally a bag of coins (and some other cool stuff) that u cant use otherwise. But when u meet them at the swamp they actually let u keep it (I think it’s the counterfeit coins anyhow) and u dont have to fight them that wat and they tell u where to go next but u stop to meet radzig and hanush on the way in rattay in hanushes castle
plus theres a stash in the monostary with a dagger and 200 groschen and possibly necronomicon 2 on the balcony that is above the prayer room next to dorms.
Sorry for the long explanation but hope it helps oh and by the way theres a key in Erik’s chamber under the keg HA LOL
IbDreamy says
NEXT DOOR TO THE BARN WHERE THEY STRING HENRY UP….THERE’S A CRUMBLED DOWN BUILDING WITH AN EASY LOCK CHEST FAR LEFT CORNER- YOU CAN STASH ALL YOUR STUFF IN IT BEFORE ALL THE ERIK CUT SCENES. THEN WHEN YOU GO TO SNEAK OUT….JUST GRAB IT ALL BACK! BEAUTIFUL!
