Objectives:
- Find materials for forging
- Start Forging
- Prove yourself to the blacksmith
Starting Location: The Blacksmith’s Son
During Main Quest 5: Wedding Crashers, you can choose to either help the blacksmith or the miller. Head north of Troskowitz to find the blacksmith in a town called Tachov. At night the blacksmith might be asleep, you can skip to daytime by pressing Touchpad. Talk to him and pick the dialogue “I’m here about the job” > “Let’s get started“. This quest is just a blacksmithing tutorial. The blacksmith will teach you how to forge a sword.
Find materials for forging
Tip: you can only track 3 side quests at a time. If you already have 3 active, it won’t show new objective markers. To fix this, open the journal and press / on the quest names to track/untrack. Otherwise the markers of new quests won’t appear.
Open the chest inside the forge, in the left corner. Loot the materials from it: Fastening material, Scrap metal, Steel.
Start Forging
Interact with the anvil to start blacksmithing.
Then from the Swords tab select “Hunting sword” and confirm with / .
Prove yourself to the blacksmith
You must now forge the hunting sword. Each step will trigger a new objective. The blacksmith will talk you through every step:
- Move the blade around in the furnace: Use the left stick to move the blade until the blacksmith says the bellows.
- Fire up the bellows: Hold / to blow the bellows, it will heat the fire. Keep holding the button for about 15 seconds until the blade starts glowing white and the next objective starts. You’ll want to move the blade back and forth with the left stick so it heats up evenly. You want all of it to glow brightly, not just parts of it. Don’t overdo the heating process or else sparks start flying which damages the blade. Take the blade out when the blacksmith says so.
- Check the blade’s temperature / Heat the entire workpiece: Press / to inspect the blade. If you haven’t already heated it evenly you’ll have to put it back on the furnace and blow the bellows again until it all glows brightly. If you already did it in the previous step it will auto-complete when inspecting the blade.
- Go to the anvil: Press / to move to the anvil.
- Move the blade: Push the left stick up/down to move the blade on the anvil, this will change the point of impact where you’re hammering it.
- Hammer the workpiece: Hold / to raise the hammer and release the button to hit with the hammer. Repeat this a few times until the next objective appears.
- Hammer the workpiece properly: Keep hammering the workpiece like you did before. The more sparks you see on impact, the better the hit.
- Forge the piece: The blacksmith explains you need to hit it evenly, one hit next to the other. You don’t want to hit the same spot repeatedly. Slightly move the blade with the left stick after each hit, so that each hit lands a little bit apart from each other.
- Turn the workpiece over and continue forging: Press / to turn the blade to its other side. Keep hitting it evenly with the hammer like you did before.
- Continue forging: Rotate it again on its other side. Hit the blade evenly from top to bottom. Then rotate it again and repeat. You want to hit each side evenly and then rotate the side each time you did it. About 6 hits per side will be ideal. After a while the sword will cool off. The color will change from a bright yellow to a dark orange.
- Reheat the workpiece: After the blade cools off press / to put it back in the furnace. Again hold / to blow the bellows until it glows white. Don’t overheat it or sparks will start flying which damages the blade. Stop when all of it glows white and the blacksmith tells you to put it back on the anvil. Keep hammering it evenly from both sides.
- Temper the blade: When it’s done, Henry will hold up the blade and the blacksmith comments that it’s done. Press / to quench and finish the blade. Henry will automatically heat it and put it in water to cool it off.
Afterward the blacksmith will talk to you. Exhaust all dialogues to ask him more about how forging works, he gives you tips. To sum it up: you want to heat it till it glows white, then hit it evenly from both sides by landing each hit next to the one before. Repeat until the workpiece is finished. Good hits are indicated by sparks flying. Don’t hit it while it’s cold, don’t overheat it, don’t hit the same spot repeatedly.
The blacksmith also provides you with a bed, in the building behind the forge, through the second door. He also gives you some materials and crafting schematics.
After talking to him the quest is complete. You can talk to the blacksmith again to start his next quest. If you’re doing his questline to get to the wedding during Main Quest 5: Wedding Crashers, then the next quest will be The Jaunt. If you already finished the wedding by doing the Miller’s questline, then The Jaunt is skipped and the next quest will be The Hermit.
Tip: The importance of sleeping & player stash – Sleeping in beds allows you to recover health and energy. If your energy drops too much you will get a debuff that lowers your stats. Sleeping in beds also advances time without an energy penalty (unlike passing time with Touchpad). Your personal chest is found next to the bed, what you store there is shared across your personal chest everywhere (at inns and other owned beds). Sleeping does increase hunger. Luckily, there’s a soup pot inside the blacksmith’s house, you can eat from it for free to gain nourishment, and the pot refills automatically over time.
This finishes The Blacksmith’s Son side quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
