Necessary Evil is the 8th main quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Necessary Evil main story quest.
Speak with Capon
MISSABLE WARNING: Side Quest “Demons of Trosky” must be completed now. It’s relevant for Been There, Done That (completed most of the game’s content). At the start of the next main quest the Knight’s Hall gets locked, then you can no longer complete one of the side quest objectives.
Immediately after the last main quest, Capon will be in front of von Bergow’s chambers. Talk to him, what dialogues you pick doesn’t matter.
Interrogate the prisoner in the torture chamber with Capon
When ready to start the torture, follow Hans and enter the torture chamber. Or if you let some time pass you can talk to Hans and say “Let’s get to it” to be transported to the chamber instantly.
You’ll want to extract as much information from the prisoner as you can without killing him. If you use torture he’s guaranteed to give the info, but if you overdo it the prisoner will die. You can also win skill checks, but if they fail you won’t get the info.
MISSABLE WARNING: The trophy Silence is Golden takes place here (prevented the raid on Semine). This is highly missable. To earn this, you have to obtain the info where the bandits are hiding (in Nebakov). After the torture you have to tell von Bergow the bandits are in Nebakov, but NOT reveal that Semine is helping the bandits. Then he sends his soldiers to raid Nebakov instead of Semine. Thus the raid on Semine is prevented. Here’s the full series of choices that unlocks the trophy:
Torture:
- We asked first
- (Slap)
- (View tongs)
- Where is your band hiding?
- We already know anyway
- (Punch)
- (Hit harder)
- (Take hammer) –> he reveals the bandits are in Nebakov (this is the crucial info needed for the trophy)
- (Continue)
- Why did you ambush us?
- You’re not worth it
- But you will (take instrument)
- (Torture)
- Let’s change the subject
Talking to Hans after Torture:
- Let’s keep quiet about Semine
Return to von Bergow and report your findings to him:
- The bandits are in Nebakov (or “The Bandits control Nebakov” if you found true lord Nebak in jail)
- Nobody helped the bandits here
- (*If in Main Quest 7: Back in the Saddle during the talk with Bergow after returning from Nebakov you said “Young Semine left his own wedding”, then you must pass another speech skill-check: “I must have made a mistake” but it’s very hard to succeed, confirmed to succeed at 22 speech with 100% reputation. If you can’t pass the skill-check you need to replay from Main Quest 7).
–> Silence is Golden unlocked. The quest ends immediately. Von Bergow sends his men to raid Nebakov instead of Semine. For the purpose of trophies/achievements it’s recommended you continue on this path! This is the best outcome anyway with the least casualties.
There are many ways this quest can play out, here are the other outcomes:
- Immediate Quest End (Semine Raid prevented): If you tell where the bandits are hiding (“The bandits are in Nekabov”), but not who the bandit leader is (“Nobody helped the bandits here” > “That’s all”), the quest will end immediately. Bergow then sends his men to Nebakov instead of Semine. –> unlocks missable trophy
Silence is Golden.
- Continue to Semine Fortress with all Soldiers (Semine Raid happens): If you give all information to von Bergow, he sends you to Semine Fortress with his full army.
- Continue to Semine Fortress with fewer Soldiers (Semine Raid happens): If you didn’t find out who the bandit leader is, or lie about it, you are still sent to Semine Fortress but with fewer soldiers (makes the raid harder).
- Prisoner tortured to death (special outcome): You lose a lot of reputation with Hans and von Bergow, but you can still decide what information to share and get any of the other 3 outcomes.
For the sake of completion the alternate quest path is covered below, you can read it for fun to know how else the quest could’ve unfolded.
If you followed the choices above, then skip to the next quest: For Victory!
Semine Raid: Speak with Capon about Semine
Talk to Capon and say “I’ll wait with you (Wait)”. This skips time to 17:00 automatically.
Semine Raid: Wait until Hashek has prepared his men (Optional)
If you waited with Hans then this completes automatically.
Note: if you don’t make it by 17:00, the raid will happen without you, in this case you’d miss out on some objectives.
Semine Raid: Ride with the soldiers and Capon to Semine
Tell Hashek you’re ready or to wait, either way he’ll start riding to Semine. Follow him there. After the other soldiers have joined, you can press /
to auto-follow them.
Upon arrival, you have a dialogue and must decide whether to side with Hashek or Semine. The party you side with you’ll defend and the opposing party you’ll have to kill. If you side with Hashek, he will execute Olda Semine. If you side with Semine, you kill Hashek’s men and burn down Semine’s estate to cover your tracks. Either way someone is going to die here.
- To side with Semine: “We’ll sort it peacefully” > “You can’t do that” > “You’re going too far!” > “I’m going to stop this”
- To side with Hashek: “Hashek is right” > “We have a witness” > “Listen to him, Semine” > “Hashek is right”.
Semine Raid: Kill the soldiers (Semine Side) / Defeat Semine and his Men (Hashek Side)
- If you sided with Semine: You must kill the soldiers of Hashek.
- If you sided with Hashek: You must kill the soldiers of Semine.
The next objectives will depend on who you sided with, see the next two objectives.
Semine Side: Speak with Semine
If you defended Semine, you must talk to him. You can ask Olda Semine about Istvan Toth and the bandits. Regardless of what you pick, the last remaining dialogue will always be to cover your tracks. Then you burn down Semine’s fortress, the Semine family will flee and disappear from the region.
Hashek Side: Search the tower and find Olda
There is no way to talk down Hashek, he’s in a blood rage and will kill anyone in his way. It’s best just to obey his orders. The soldiers will kill all servants in the fortress, your task is to find Olda. He’s at the top of the tower.
Here the paths can diverge again, you get one last chance to side with Olda Simene by letting him go, or to report his location to Hashek and he’ll execute him.
- Side with Hashek: “Don’t play the righteous one” > “You’ll be tried” > “I’m going for the burgrave” > Hashek arrives and executes Semine
- Side with Olda Semine: You can say “What exactly did our men do to you?” > “I’ll let you go” > “And what if I were?” > must defeat Hashek in a duel & get rid of Hashek’s men (kill all of them).
Both Paths: Report to von Bergow in the morning
No matter how things turned out, you’ll have to talk to Bergow the next morning to report what happened. There are again different outcomes. If you killed Haskek and his men, you can stay silent and let Capon do the talking, he’ll convince von Bergow with a made-up story. Or you can admit you killed Hashek.
Secret Ending: You can admit you killed the burgrave (Hashek), then Henry gets hanged = Game Over. This is sort of a secret early ending, but won’t unlock the trophy for beating the game. Afterward, you’ll have to load the last save and stay silent during the talk with von Bergow until to convince him of your cover story.
No matter if you sided with Haskek or Semine you’ll get the next main quest “For Victory!”.
This finishes Necessary Evil main quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
