In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (KCD2) lockpicking is an important gameplay feature. It allows you to open locked chests and doors. There are 5 difficulties of locks: Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard.
The lock difficulty affects the size of the pin and how accurate you need to be. Higher-difficulty locks can only be opened after increasing the Thievery skill. The higher the Thievery skill, the easier it gets.
How to pick Locks:
- First, you’ll need Lockpicks. These can be bought from various traders and found as loot from people and chests. During the Miller’s Side Quest “Materia Prima” you automatically get a few lockpicks.
- Interact with the locked chest/door. This will bring up the lockpicking minigame. You must find the spot where the orange pin starts glowing golden. Then you must hold R2/RT to rotate the lock while holding the pin in place so it keeps glowing golden. If the pin stops being golden it will get closer to breaking.
- This requires some practice. To make it easier, pick very easy difficulty locks and pickpocket people at night while they sleep. This will quickly raise the Thievery skill. At Thievery Level 20 it will be much easier to pick any lock. You can also make a save before picking locks (Pause Menu > Save & Exit to Menu). If too many of your lockpicks break you can reload to get them back.
Useful skills & potions:
- Thievery > Tool Master (+15% durability to lockpicks before they break)
- Thievery > Mischief Artist (+3 Thievery for 120 seconds after lockpicking or pickpocketing)
- Potion “Strong Quickfinger” (+6 Thievery for 40 minutes) – bought from apothecary in Kuttenberg (reachable after Main Quest 14: Speak of the Devil) for ~45 Groschen depending on reputation
