The Magic Chisel is the 7th story main quest in God of War (2018, PS4). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Magic Chisel Main Quest.
The Magic Chisel triggers automatically after completing A New Destination.
Follow Mimir’s Instructions to the Chisel
Hit the switch in the middle of the platform to cause it to descend back to the level of the bridge. Go back to the South to the exterior of Tyr’s temple, and go down the stairs to the boat. Follow the waypoint until you reach The Mason’s Channel, passing through the archway created by the giant statues’ oars. Follow the passage north past a giant gateway until you find a boat dock where you can put ashore. On the shore overlooking the gateway will be a crank wheel that you can use to open it, allowing access to the cave beyond.
As soon as you do so, you will be attacked by an ogre and a number of dark elves. Kill everything and return to your boat, then paddle into the newly accessible cavern. Follow the underground river as the area starts to get more frozen over. Eventually you will reach The Northern Dock and be able to put ashore.
Investigate the Dead Giant
Follow the waypoint to the east, dealing with a number of Wulvers as you go. The waypoint will lead you to a wall of ice that has grown up around Thamur’s dead finger. On the finger will be a massive ring with a Shatter Crystal set into the band. Command Atreus to fire a shock arrow at it to cause a blast that breaks it loose from the ice and allow you to spin it around the giant’s finger.
Turn it to the left as far as it will go, then use a shock arrow to blast another hole in the ice. (Turn it to the right and do the same for a treasure chest!) Go into the new tunnel to the left of the finger and climb down the chain into a lower area.
The waypoint will lead you north, to a section of wall that you can climb up. Follow the path up a ramp until you’re back outside, then climb up a long chain to reach the top of a cliff.
Retrieve a Piece of the Chisel
Follow the waypoint to the northeast killing Wulvers and an Ice Ancient along the way. At the far side of this area, you’ll have to lift a large stone out of the way to reach a new area, the Head of Thamur. Atreus and Kratos will talk about how to reach the frozen area beneath the giant, and Kratos will indicate that he has a plan while looking up at Thamur’s giant hammer, telegraphing how to accomplish the next objective.
Find a Way to Break the Ice
Right after the cinematic, you will be attacked by several waves of Draugrs and a pair of Ogres. Once you’ve killed everything, Sindri will make an appearance standing on top of a wall, and toss you down a chain to climb up.
Talk to Sindri
This will occur automatically in a cinematic once you reach the top of the chain.
Find a Way to the Hammer
To the right of Sindri’s shop will be a number of bound braids of Thamur’s hair, held together with metal rings with inset Shatter Crystals. On either side of the crystal will be two targets that you can hit with the Leviathan Axe to cause the ring to rotate. The trick is to hit one of the targets with the axe, then hit the crystal with a shock arrow before it spins around again to the other side and explodes.
If you time this right, it will cause the explosion to dislodge the braid and drop it to the ground below (Also causing Sindri to freak out for causing massive explosions right next to his shop). This will clear a path to the east for you to follow, jumping across the gaps as you go. Open the door at the end of the path, and go inside.
You will fight a Traveller with a shield on its back. Its heavy armor is a severe pain in the ass, and when it turns its back on you, all of your attacks will bounce off of the shield and cause no damage. Parry his horizontal attack (yellow), and roll out of the way of its vertical attack (red). When the Traveller is backing towards you, if he dashes away, immediately roll to the left or right. He will immediately charge you and inflict massive damage on you if his charge connects. There will be a moment after all of their attacks where its safe to attack the Traveller before he recovers and continues the attack. Once you have defeated the Traveller, pull out the large stone block on the west wall to reveal a path. Jump across the gaps until you jump to a wall.
Shimmy to the left along the ledge until you can drop down to a ledge below you, then drop down again to an even lower ledge.
Shimmy to the right a little, then jump across the gap to the right to reach another ledge. Go around the corner and keep shimmying to the right until you reach the end, then look up to find a ledge above you.
Jump up, then look down and to the right to find a ledge that you can leap to. From here, look up and leap to grab the ledge above you, then shimmy to the right until you can pull yourself up.
Dangling down from the hammer will be a belt with a Shatter Crystal buckle. Move to the edge of the platform near it so that you can interact with it and push it away from you.
While it’s swinging out, order Atreus to hit it with a shock arrow to trigger the crystal. The explosion will shatter most of the ice on the hammer’s grip.
Repeat this to smash the rest of the ice and cause it to shift at a precarious angle. It’s being held up by the other strap, which you must now free to achieve your goal.
Make Your Way Up the Hammer
Continue down the path until you are close to the belt’s new position. Jump across the gap to land on it, and climb up the belt. From the ledge at the top, leap to the right. You will swing from an outcropping and land on another ledge in the ice.
Climb up from there, leaping from ledge to ledge until you reach a hole that you can climb up into.
Move to the other side of the hole and interact with the barrier to kick it out of the way. On the left side of the hole will be a ledge that you can climb up to continue your ascent.
Jump to the ledge above, then climb up into another hole. Use a shock arrow on the shatter crystal at the end of the short tunnel to destroy this barrier.
Climb onto the ledge on the right side of the hole and up several ledges to the top.
Release the Strap
Follow the waypoint to the right, and interact with the chain link to trigger a QTE and a short cinematic. At the end you will leap to a nearby ledge.
Find a Way to the Hammer’s Head
Go through the nearby doorway, and continue into the chamber beyond. You will find a sand table in the center of a platform that has collapsed into the floor. Smash the wooden barrier to your right with the Leviathan Axe, then press square to order Atreus to go into the hole.
He will move through the hole to the other side, then jump across to the platform, where you can press square again to get him to interact with the sand bowl. Atreus will read the clue “When time itself is disarrayed / The forward path is retrograde”, and panels will open below the pictures on the opposite wall to reveal targets that you can hit to rotate the pictures left and right.
Atreus guesses that the order should be “Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn”, but the clue indicates that you should reverse that order. From left to right, change the first picture to the leaf (Autumn), the second to the sun (Summer), the third to the flower (Spring) and the last to the snowflake (Winter). Aim at Atreus and hit the square button to get him to write the runes in the sand bowl. This will cause a new word to appear on the wall, which Atreus writes in the bowl to cause the platform to reassemble.
Move onto the platform and Kratos will tell Atreus to write the word again, causing the platform to rise. Atreus will begin writing the word over and over until he is interrupted by several Draugr jumping onto the platform. Destroy them quickly before the platform falls. Atreus will warn you when the energy is almost depleted. When they have all been defeated, Atreus will go back to writing, until another wave of regular and heavy Draugr jump onto the platform to again interrupt your progress. This will happen a third time, adding Nightmares and Revenants into the mix. The fourth time enemies appear, they will be Ranged Draugrs on a ledge that has shatter crystals on either side of them. Shoot both of them to destroy the ledge.
On the wall where the ledge was, there will now be a crack that you can jump across to, then use to climb up to the opening above.
Push the Hammer
Follow the waypoint to the edge of the platform, climb up on the ledge here and shimmy to the right until you can pull yourself up onto the platform. Walk to the hammer’s head and press circle to trigger another QTE and cinematic.
When you have control again, walk through the tunnel into the room ahead.
Make Your Way to the Chisel
Walk ahead to the right, and jump across to the ledge on the wall. Shimmy around the corner to the left, drop down to the ledge below, then shimmy left until you can leap to the ledge on your left.
Look up and to your left to see a ledge you can jump to. This will cause a huge avalanche, obscuring your vision for a few seconds. Once the screen clears, you’ll see a ledge to your left that you can jump to.
Shimmy left around the corner, then drop down two ledges. Look up to the left, and jump to another ledge which you can shimmy left on until you can jump to the platform below.
On the southeast wall is another ledge that you can climb.
Jump up two ledges, then look to your left to see a platform that you can jump to. Atreus will run ahead of you at this point, leading you down the path towards a tunnel that ends in a door. Go through the door into The Dining Hall.
Above you will be a large chandelier with a Shatter Crystal in it, frozen into the wall. Use shock arrows on the Shatter Crystal to knock it free, causing it to smash into a wall of ice on the other side of the room and get stuck.
Hit the Shatter Crystal again with shock arrows again to dislodge the chandelier, and cause it to get stuck in a third wall. Hit it one more time with shock arrows to knock it free of the chandelier, causing the Shatter Crystal to fall to the ground. At this point, it will act as a source of throwable Shatter Crystals as normal, letting you be more strategic with your explosions. You can see the outlines of three creatures frozen in the ice on the west side of the room. Throw a Shatter Crystal at each one, using shock arrows to smash the ice one section at a time. Each one you destroy will reveal a powerful enemy, so defeat each one separately before you release the next.
The left block contains three Wulvers, the middle block contains a named Frost Giant called Stonebeard King, and the block on the right holds an Ogre and a Nightmare. Once all three ice blocks have been destroyed, you can climb up the platform on the left side to reach a path that the ice had been blocking. Follow it around to the right to find Sindri working away at the forge.
Continue following the waypoint to the east, and you’ll start to hear Magni and Modi arguing in the next room. Move to the end of the path, then jump across the gap to reach a ledge on the wall. Shimmy around the corner to the right, then leap to the right to the next ledge.
Continue shimmying to the right until you can jump down to the platform below you.
Retrieve a Piece of the Chisel
Move to the end of the platform and drop down to trigger a cinematic that leads into a boss fight with Magni and Modi. They will split up and attack you and Atreus individually, occasionally switching off as the battle goes on. Try to concentrate on one enemy at a time, because when each enemy loses two blocks of life, they will drop to one knee and stop attacking, taking no more damage until the next stage of the fight.
Magni is the talled of the two brothers, blonde and carrying a large sword. Magni will follow a pattern similar to a Traveller, with a horizontal slice followed by a vertical smash. Parry the first attack with your shield and hit him while he is off balance. If Magni grabs you, you can hit square to break the grab as long as Atreus hasn’t been knocked down. Watch out if Magni winds up for an unblockable horizontal slash, and be prepared to roll under his sword.
Modi on the other hand is shorter, has dark hair, a shield and a hammer. He will frequently deflect your attacks with his shield, making him difficult to hit. Perform a shield bash to get him to drop his guard, and hit him before he can recover.
When both men have lost two blocks of their life bar, roughly a third of their total, there will be a bright white flash and you will lose sight of them. Lightning will crash down, and a fog or some kind of mist will surround you, hiding them from your view. You and Atreus will stand back to back, and you will have to watch and listen for their attack to know which direction to rotate to be able to deflect their attack with your shield. When they come at you, you will see a directional indicator for only three seconds before the attack happens, so you will have to be alert. Quickly rotate in the direction of the attack and press L1 to bring up your shield to block.
After three attacks the battle will continue normally, with each man adding special area affect attacks. Magni will add a charged ground stab that causes area affect lightning damage when it hits, and Modi will throw a lightning blast that arcs towards you and explodes in an area affect when it hits the ground. Luckily each stage of the battle comes with a checkpoint, so if you die at this point, Magni and Modi will begin with one third of their life bar already depleted.
You will again be blinded once you have gotten both men down to one third life. This time both Magni and Modi will attack four times, usually one right after the other, forcing you to move and block quickly between attacks.
In the third part of the battle. Magni and Modi will add combination attacks to their repertoire. Magni will toss Modi into the air, and Modi will hit the ground with a massive ground smash that does area affect lightning damage. Block with your shield to avoid being hit. Modi will also charge up by banging on his shield then shoot a lightning bolt straight at you that does more damage the longer you are hit with it. Roll out as soon as possible to avoid it.
Once you have depleted both of their life bars, the end of the fight will play out in a cinematic. When you have control again, follow the waypoint over to the chisel and interact with it to break off a piece with your axe and complete the mission.
Release the Strap
This will occur automatically in a cinematic once you reach the top of the chain.
This finishes The Magic Chisel main journey quest in God of War. Now the next quest Behind the Lock starts.
