Introduction

Welcome to the God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide! This free DLC is a roguelite mode where you play through chambers filled with enemies. The goal is to reach the end without dying. If you die, you respawn in the hub area, called “The Shore”. However, each run is relatively short, taking only 20-30 minutes on the easiest difficulty. You can also save your progress mid-game by visiting a shop and exiting the game. This can be used to upload your save to PS+ cloud, if something goes wrong you can copy back the save and respawn at the shop. Each run you complete advances the story. The story chapters can be viewed by pressing Touchpad > Goals > Valhalla. Most of the trophies come automatically from story progress. Focus on playing through the story and try to do the Mastery Quests along the way. You unlock more gameplay features as you complete runs. You are then able to buy permanent attribute upgrades. If you play on easy you should buy the upgrades for more damage to get through it faster. To play the DLC you must download a separate file from PS Store called “God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla”. Then the DLC can be started from the Title Screen by clicking on “VALHALLA”. Also see How to Start God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC. This game mode doesn’t carry over your main game progress as it takes place in a different world.

Step 1: Finish All 6 Story Chapters + Do Mastery Challenges

On your first attempt let yourself die to advance the story. Then finish each attempt in one life without dying to advance the story. Between attempts it will give you some cutscenes. Keep doing this until you earn the trophy :silver: God of Hope for finishing the story. Everything can be done on the easiest difficulty. If you need to exit the game, visit a shop and choose to return to the main menu, this will save the game without losing progress (you can also back up the save to PS+ and copy it back if you die).

Along the way, already start working on the Mastery Quests. These can be seen by pressing Touchpad > Goals > Mastery. The easiest ones are the “Rage” and “Shield” Masteries. These only require you to select a different Rage/Shield before each attempt. More Mastery Quests become available as you advance the story. Other easy ones are for getting each weapon’s Light/Heavy Relic Glyph. Write them down on a piece of paper and cross them off as you find them, they come randomly from loot chests.

Step 2: Boat Captain Keys & The Forum Arena

The Boat Captain Keys start spawning after reclaiming Pandora’s Statue during the final story Chapter “The Work, Part 3: Benevolence”. It will now spawn 1 key per attempt, always in the first chamber, next to the first chest, in front of the wooden painting. They look like purple glowing items on the ground. You will need another 3 full playthroughs for this. Collect the Key in the first chamber on each attempt, it always spawns in the same place. You must beat Týr at the end of each run to make another key spawn, if you die it won’t spawn a key.

After the story you will also gain access to the third and final arena, called “The Forum”. The three arenas can be played in the foggy maze before the Týr boss (one on the right, one on the left, one in the middle upstairs).

If you haven’t gotten :bronze: Wayfarer for visiting all 9 Realms, make sure that at the start of each run you pick a different weapon bonus from the first chest. What weapon bonus you pick determines what Realm you will visit before the foggy maze area. The 2nd last Realm you visit is always tied to what weapon bonus you selected at the first chest. These realms will never randomly appear, so the only way to get them is to pick between the Axe, Blades, or Spear from the first chest.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Dark Odyssey
Participate in the sacrifice
Bronze
Automatic story-related trophy, unlocks after Chapter 2: Homecoming (seen under Touchpad > Goals > Valhalla).

The earliest you can do the Sacrifice is on the 3rd run (died once, did another run to return to shore, start 3rd run). Continue playing through the realms until you meet Helios. This is a forced ‘story’ moment and can’t be missed if you play through enough realms in one attempt. In the Helios section you will have to do the Sacrifice to advance, can’t miss it. This will end your 3rd run and return you to the shore.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Blood, Sweat, and Týr
Battle Týr
Bronze
Automatic story-related trophy, unlocks after Chapter 3: The Host (seen under Touchpad > Goals > Valhalla).

The earliest you can battle Týr is on the 4th run (died once, did another run to return to shore, do sacrifice on 3rd run, then play 4th run to the end until Týr). On the 4th run continue playing through the realms until you reach the Týr boss fight. This is a forced ‘story’ moment and can’t be missed if you play through enough realms in one attempt. Defeat Týr and exit through the gate to finish this run and earn the trophy.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Scry Me a River
Reclaim Kratos’ Oath Stone
Bronze
Automatic story-related trophy, unlocks at the start of Chapter 4: The Work, Part I: Acceptance (seen under Touchpad > Goals > Valhalla).

The earliest you can do this is during your 5th run (after you defeated Týr for the first time and started the next run). You will come to a point where you must pick up a glowing orb. This is a forced ‘story’ moment and can’t be missed if you play through enough realms in one attempt. On your way to defeat Týr the 2nd time you will automatically get this and it initiates the next story chapter.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Wayfarer
Visit all 9 Realms in Valhalla
Bronze
In total there are 9 realms.

  • 3 Realms are dependent on which starting weapon perk you pick. In the first chamber you can pick a buff for the Axe, Blades, or Spear. What you pick will determine what Realm you get before the final Realm (the 2nd last realm before you reach the foggy maze). So you must pick each weapon once and then finish a playthrough with it. If you always pick the same weapon you’d always end up in the same 2nd last realm. These realms can’t be randomly gotten as they are hardcoded to which of the 3 weapon perks you picked in the first chest.
  • 6 Realms are random. While finishing the story you are very likely to visit each Realm at least once. The only ones you never go to by luck are the 3 weapon-specific Realms.
God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap No Kratos, No Scry
Reclaim Pandora’s Statue
Bronze
Automatic story-related trophy, unlocks during Chapter 6: The Work, Part 3: Benevolence (seen under Touchpad > Goals > Valhalla).

The earliest you can do this is during your 7th run (after defeating Týr 3 times, on the next run after that). You will come to a point where you must pick up Pandora’s Statue. This is a forced ‘story’ moment and can’t be missed if you play through enough realms in one attempt. On your way to defeat Týr the 4th time you will automatically get this.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Fight at the Forum
Participate in a fight at The Forum arena
Bronze

The Forum is the 3rd and final arena, found in the foggy maze area in the final area before Týr boss. The arenas unlock gradually from story progress. You don’t need to play the first 2 arenas, just playing one match in the third arena is enough.

Here’s how to unlock the Arenas:

  • Arena #1: The Aegan Boat – unlocks after defeating Týr the 2nd time (on your run to defeat him the 3rd time, in “Chapter 5: The Work, Part 2: Vigilance”). It then spawns on the far right side of the foggy maze.
  • Arena #2: The Desert of Lost Souls – unlocks after defeating Týr the 3rd time (on your run to defeat him the 4th time, in “Chapter 6: The Work, Part 3: Benevolence”). It then spawns on the far left side of the foggy maze.
  • Arena #3: The Forum – unlocks after defeating Týr the 4th time (on your run to defeat him the 5th time, after finishing “Chapter 6: The Work, Part 3: Benevolence”). It then spawns upstairs straight ahead in the foggy maze. You must defeat 7 Chosen before you can enter this arena.

After you play a match in the third arena you get this trophy.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Easy Come, Easy Go
Acquire more than 15,000 Fleeting Echoes on a single attempt
Bronze
For this you must get 15,000 Fleeting Echoes in A SINGLE RUN. It doesn’t count cumulatively across all your runs.

This will come automatically when doing the trophy :bronze: Fight at the Forum. Because to enter the Forum arena you must defeat 7 Chosen and then the Arena gives you more than enough points. So don’t worry about this, just do the Forum Arena.

Alternatively, this can also be obtained before unlocking the Forum Arena. It can be done by defeating all Chosen in the foggy Maze before Týr and playing 1-2 arenas. The first arena unlocks after defeating Týr 2 times. The second arena after defeating him 3 times. The arenas are found in the foggy Maze before Týr, you will get a tutorial message when they unlock. Each Chosen you defeat in the maze gives a score multiplier, so the more of them you defeat the more points you get. With one arena you might only get to 14,000 points. But with 2 arenas and defeating all Chosen you can easily get more than 15,000. So just keep playing until you unlocked all arenas, then this will be trivial. At the blue stone at The Shore you can also buy upgrades that give you more Fleeting Echoes per enemy encounter but this isn’t necessary for this trophy, if you play all 3 arenas and defeat all Chosen you can easily get over 30,000 per run.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Understood the Assignment
Complete 9 Mastery Quests
Bronze
Mastery Quests can be viewed by pressing Touchpad > Goals > Mastery. It’s recommended to always pick a different Spartan Rage & Shield on each attempt to work on these from the beginning. After finishing a Mastery you must talk to the Valkyries at The Shore (hub area) to make it count as “completed”.

There are 24 Mastery Quests total, they become available gradually as you make more story progress and unlock new features. You only need to finish 9, so you can pick the easiest ones.

Recommendations of easy ones:

  1. Rage Mastery I – defeat an encounter in Lower Realms with a different Spartan Rage equipped (simply select a different Spartan Rage before each attempt)
  2. Rage Mastery II – defeat your opponent in The Proving Grounds with each Spartan Rage (simply select a different Spartan Rage before each attempt)
  3. Rage Mastery III – defeat Týr with each Spartan Rage (simply select a different Spartan Rage before each attempt)
  4. Shield Mastery I – defeat an encounter in Lower Realms with different Shield equipped (simply select a different shield before each attempt)
  5. Shield Mastery II – defeat your opponent in The Proving Grounds with different shields (simply select a different shield before each attempt)
  6. Shield Mastery III – defeat Týr with different shields (simply select a different shield before each attempt)
  7. Travel Mastery – choose doors that lead to all 7 types of rewards (pick a door with a different symbol each time until you got one of each)
  8. Greek Labyrinth Mastery – open 9 greek chests (the chests in the final area before Týr where you must defeat the Chosen in the foggy maze. Greek chests are the golden chests that cost Fleeting Echoes where you activate the final portal Týr. Simply defeat all Chosen and use the Echoes to open as many chests as possible per run. Later you can open 5 per run, so this can be done in just 2 runs after reaching the end of the story).
  9. Permanent Upgrade Mastery – purchase 15 permanent upgrades (done at the red/blue stone at The Shore – it’s recommended to buy the damage and defense upgrades)

Other easy challenges are the ones that require you to find one of each Light/Heavy Runic Attack Glyph. However, this involves some luck, they are randomly found in chests. If you want to go for these, write down all Runic Glyphs you still need. When you open a chest check if it’s one you need and if so cross it off your list. You can also press Touchpad > Goals > Masteries while at a chest to check which ones you still need.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap Style Points
Equip a Cosmetic Armor
Bronze
After you died for the first time, complete the next run until you are returned to the hub area. In the hub area, before starting your next run, interact with the yellow glowing pillar to change your cosmetic appearance. This is purely cosmetical and doesn’t affect your attributes. You go back to the hub area “The Shore” between each run.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC Trophy Guide & Roadmap You Again?
Find all 3 Boat Captain Keys
Bronze

The Boat Captain Keys are only available after reclaiming Pandora’s Statue in Chapter 6: The Work, Part 3: Benevolence, as seen under Touchpad > Goals > Valhalla. That’s after unlocking :bronze: No Kratos, No Scry.

Then on your next attempt, in the first chamber it will spawn a purple key in front of the painting, next to where you open the first chest.

It will spawn 1 key in this place per additional run you successfully finish. You have to defeat Týr each time! If you die it won’t spawn the next key. The 2nd and 3rd key spawn in the same spot, in the first chamber in front of that same painting. So just keep defeating Týr, start another attempt, collect the next key in the first chamber, repeat until you got 3 keys.

Thanks so much for the guide!

For the “find one of each Light/Heavy Runic Attack Glyph” Mastery Quest – when you are presented with your 2 random options, you are able to open the Goals menu and see which ones you have selected so far. This should be easier than tracking it with pen and paper.

This works but you gotta scroll through menus every time and and click through the challenges which gets a bit annoying and immersion-breaking. I find it more efficient to have everything at a glance written down and cross it off instead of scrolling through the menu at every chest. I added a note to the trophy description that it can also be checked via the menu while at the chest, comes down to personal preference.

There is a *much* easier way to know which ones you are missing. You just need to look at the titles of each relic (weak/strong runic attack, not the actual name of the relic), and if you haven’t chosen one yet, they will show a little “quest” icon to the left of their title.

The quest icon is the same as elsewhere in the game, which usually is a dark blue, with what seems a couple of intertwined snakes. Here they appear plain in color.

Actually, in the “stores” (don’t remember the name), is the same for relics (the green ones). if you still don’t have one, they’ll show the little icon in the corner within the actual icon of the relic, as well as on the item description, meaning that you don’t have those yet.

I don’t know if i can post links, but in case i don’t, here it is a link to a gallery for more clarity, just replace _ with a dot:

      imgur_com/a/vIK8d66

I don’t know if this was added in some update, since I’ve started to play just recently, but i find it super useful. Hope it helps someone!

Did some more experimenting on this. The exact trigger is having collected Pandora’s Statue ( :bronze: No Kratos, No Scry ), which is the final story run where you defeat Týr the last time. If you die during the run it will spawn the key on the next attempt regardless.

Yes, I did it on another account and that is the trigger, thanks for checking!

I got a key after killing Tyr once. So the trigger is something else or mine is bugged.

    • PowerPyx says

      December 15, 2023 at 11:50 pm

Maybe there is yet another way to trigger it earlier. Some people commented it may be related to how many Chosen you defeat in the maze, which would make sense because on later runs you are forced to defeat more of them before you can fight Týr (thus ‘guaranteeing’ you killed enough Chosen to automatically trigger a key on next run).

However, the sureshot way that seems to work for everyone is to defeat Týr the 4th time, then defeat him again to respawn a key each time.

Delete your PS5 save (back it up to PS+ cloud beforehand) > have the PS4 save on console > boot up PS5 version > it will automatically import the PS4 save. Click on “VALHALLA” in title screen and everything autopops.

Powerpyx, there is a strange perk that says “???” and is called something like “mark of the collector”. I’m very curious if you found out what it does? I was very curious when I saw it because it had no description, no nothing.

Found out what it does. You destroy the perk, it gives you a random relic with 1 charge, infinitely. So pretty op. You use the relic, it swaps to another random one, and so on. Pretty fun!

Turns out you don’t need to beat Tyr to spawn another boat key (you don’t even have to fight him, actually). As long as you trigger the conversation related to the key (which happens when you enter the “foggy area”) before dying, you’ll get another one on your next run.

    Thanks for the guide!

Small correction: the conversation happens in Helheim, which is just before the “foggy area”.

I have only beat Tyr once and I have a boat key already. I don’t recall if I got it on the following run or the run after. I didn’t get to Tyr on the run immediately after I killed him the first time. I do not have the No Kratos, No Scry trophy.

For the boat key trophy, I actually got my 3rd key without having to defeat Tyr in the prior run. What happened was on my 2nd key run I finished up the objective in Greece (which is to defeat 6 chosen) but I had to return to shore from the options menu because Kratos suddenly fell through the map while climbing a ledge.

When I returned to shore and started another attempt, when I grabbed the key again it counted as my 3rd. Maybe the key (no pun intended) is to return to shore instead of dying? It definitely isn’t locked behind defeating Tyr again though. Maybe once reaching Greece or completing the objectives there?

I’m a huge admirer of this site, to preface, but if I was to nitpick this is more of a 4-5/10 difficulty.

I am on Ch. 6 and I’ve not died (except intentionally to kick the DLC off) but my 2nd and 3rd time battling Tyr were extremely close calls. Pretty nervous for 4 through 6. It is nothing brutal, but Valhalla is harder than anything in the base game IMO. I had absolutely no issues with anything base game.

I usually either strongly agree with the difficult rating or accept it as cautious to account for player skill level, but I question 3/10 if the base game is a 4/10 – I’d at least flip it. Maybe I am just getting old.

You can back up your save at the shop just before Týr. Even if you die can simply restore the save. On lowest difficulty it’s not bad if you upgraded your damage/defense. Týr frequently dropped health from the throughout the fight. There is also some luck involved with what buffs you get from chests but if you always go for stat increases (ideally strength/defense) that makes it easier. Don’t forget to use relics either, especially the one that slows time is good. If you die, copy back save from PS+ cloud to respawn before Týr without redoing everything.

I would have to disagree. It’s a 3/10 on easy, 4/10 on normal. This coming from someone who really struggled with the berserker king and Valkyrie queen in the normal game on balanced difficulty.

On easy and normal if you concentrate on defense and strength upgrades before each run it’s really easy. Even on the default difficulty I never once died in a run other than the first run to advance the story. I beat Tyr the last time on normal and didn’t even get knocked down to half health.

Plus you can get up to three resurrection stones, two to start a run, and another if you have the crests once you get to the final area. Easy/normal it’s a 4 tops, but I’d stick to a 3/10. Even the forum boss fights are way easier than their main game equivalents.

  12. PhantomFear94 says

    December 15, 2023 at 9:11 am

An important note on “You Again?” – it isn’t true you have to beat Tyr to get the boat keys.

I think the requirement is 6+ of Valhallas chosen in Greece, not defeating Tyr. I could see why you’d think this because if you defeat Tyr you’d get the same result, but I never beat Tyr after the story and still got all 3 keys.

For me, I the story, then got my first key spawn as per the guide. However, on my next run, I then died in the forum, (I did 7 Valhalla Chosen) and still spawned my 2nd key. After this I tried dying again, nothing happened, but after fighting and dying to Tyr on my next run (I did 10 Valhalla Chosen, both easier arenas for 15K) and that spawned my final key.

Each time, the continuity was 6+ Valhalla Chosen to spawn Tyr, but I didn’t defeat him either time. This the easiest path to DLC 100%

    – Die once
    – Finish story, defeat Tyr 4 times
    – 1st key spawned, do 7 Valhalla Chosen to spawn both Tyr and Forum fight – choose forum before Tyr (doesn’t matter if you win)
    – 2nd key spawned, do both easier arenas for 15K and to spawn both Tyr and Forum fight – go straight to Tyr (doesn’t matter if you win)
    – Mop up 9 Masteries if required

This way I only beat Tyr the 4 mandatory times for the story, and didn’t have to win in the Forum.

Like I’ve said in my comment below, I’ve got all three keyes before even fighting Tyr a second time during the main story. I’m playing on hardest difficulty and after collecting Oath Stone I’ve was trying to reach second Tyr fight multiple times. During those multiple attempts, all three keyes spawned for me. You only need to pick up the key and go to the realm (Niflheim, Helheim or Muspelheim) to trigger the conversation about the key between Kratos and Mimir. I’ve never fought more than required four Valhalla chosen during my attempts. I’ve seen some walkthroughs online, some people also picked up the key on their way to fight Tyr a second time, way before they collected Pandora’s figure.

You can collect Boat Captain keyes way earlier. I’m playing on hardest difficulty and, after picking up Oath Stone while I was trying to reach second fight with Tyr, I collected all three keyes during each run. You just need to get to the Niflheim, Helheim or Muspelheim before Greece part where Kratos and Mimir will talk about the keyes. I don’t know what triggers keyes to spawn, but they spawned for me after first fight with Tyr and after I picked up Oath Stone.

There are no platinum trophies for the Valhalla DLC, and in fact, no other DLCs or extra modes (e.g. New Game +) for any other game have platinum trophies.

I read somewhere that it is kind of a rule that only the main games can have platinums (and although most games do, not every game have plats, e.g. old ones or some indies)

You can easily get boat key 3 times without full playthrough.
    STEPS –
Start a run, grab key from 1st room, complete 2nd room and in 3rd select Skull Shaped door to fight Valkyrie Chosen.
Then in next room you will have that ascending sand unlocked to teleport to you upper realm either Muspelheim, Niflheim or Helheim.
At this point Kratos and Mimir will talk about Key, this conversation is the green signal that your progess is saved and you can exit to the shore safely.
Rinse and repeat 2 more time.
