- Travel with Hotoke to find the rescue party
- Investigate the battle site
- Follow the trail of rice
- Defeat the Mongols
- Look for the captured monk and husband
- Choose which hostage to save
Starting Location: The Impact of Loss
Find Hotoke
Hotoke is found at the same camp as the quest giver. She’s up the little slope, when facing the quest giver it’s to the right. She’s a woman with blue dress, green skirt, black hairs. She’s kneeling down on the floor by a small tent. See the image of her below.
Travel with Hotoke to find the rescue party
Follow Hotoke, she will show you the way.
Investigate the battle site
Hotoke will stop at a battle site where a dead body is on the ground. Follow the trail of dead bodies until you come to a bag of rice on the small muddy path (3rd image below). It will say Examine when looking at it. Do this and you’ll get a new objective to follow the trail of rice.
Follow the trail of rice
Follow the white trail of rice along the small muddy path. There are also footprints in the mud to show you the way. Below is the map location of where you need to go, in case you get lost (it’s on the shore of a lake).
Defeat the Mongols
Once you arrive there, defeat the Mongols at the shore.
Look for the captured monk and husband
Now press at the survey point and then look to the right and to the left to spot the hostages and press to scout out their surroundings. A white ring on the screen will show you the direction to look in.
Choose which hostage to save
Now you have a choice to make – you can only save one of the two hostages. There is no way to save both. Once you go to one of them, the other dies automatically, no way around this.
On the right side you have Hotoke’s Husband. On the left side you have the Monk who you originally went looking for.
If you save the husband on the right, Hotoke will be happy with your choice. If you save the Monk on the left, Hotoke will be upset with you because you let her husband die and her child will grow up without a father.
Other than the lines of dialogue at the end of the quest, there is no far-reaching impact of your choice. It doesn’t affect anything else and also doesn’t affect your quest reward. So choose what you want, it doesn’t matter.
Once you go to your chosen hostage, you still need to defeat the enemies at the shore. You can do a stealth chain kill on the first few, shoot the shaman with arrows and defeat the rest with melee attacks. They will also try to kill your remaining hostage, indicated by the red icon above the enemy’s head. When you see this icon, kill that enemy right away or else they will kill the hostage after a few seconds.
After the Mongols are defeated the cutscene will play out where the saved hostage thanks you, the other lying dead on the beach, and Hotoke reacting to your choice.
This finishes The Impact of Loss quest in Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island.

Damn i was sure that it would be possible to save both of them. I chose to spare the monk simply she respects him so much and left the husband for dead because there are other fish in the sea until i found out that she has a kid with him. Damn.
Cody says
I did the same , felt bad about the child.
Jason Lehen says
This is a terrible mission. Its a play toward what sucker punch has done before with infamous and i for one expecting more out of them then leaving players with that heavy decision yet again. Especially since it plays no part in the bigger picture. Jins abilities are constantly hindered between mistakes and choices out of the players control.
Beastmode420 says
It may impact his feelings and situation but never his abilities. He has the same strengths in battle, regardless of decisions made.
Kaiwano says
While not far reaching, the choice impacts both the state of the camp and also an encounter with Hotoke’s raiders in the northwest of Kidafure Battleground.

So. I chose to save Daoshun (The Monk). Hotoke reacted as described above. However, I did encounter her again at Kifadure Village of the Massacre at Kifadure Village before heading to Senjo Gorge where she appeared suddenly and if you talk to her a bunch of bandits attack.
