Starting Location: The Heavenly Strike

Find the musician in Komatsu

Just to the south of River Falls Bridge, you will find a musician at the crossroads playing a biwa. Speak with him to hear about a fearsome warrior who demanded to hear the tale of Shigenori’s Heavenly Strike. The musican tells you that the warrior then flew into a rage and butchered the people the road, then chased a surviving woman who had fled towards River Falls Bridge.

Search for the bridge

Head north, and you’ll hear a woman weeping as you get near.

Search for the weeping woman

It doesn’t take much to find the woman, hiding under the bridge.

Speak with the woman

Drop down to the riverbank and speak to the woman. She tells you that the man who murdered everyone is Yasuhira Koga.

Investigate Yasuhira’s path

On the other side of the river, you’ll pick up on a trail of Yasuhira’s horses which you’ll have to follow.

Follow Yasuhira’s horse’s tracks

Follow the horse’s tracks north along the road, and then head left at the fork. The tracks will come and go, but keep following the path and you’ll pick up the trail again. The trail will head through a logging camp, and then Jin will notice them constructing a road block.

Reach the encounter area

Approach the small camp and get ready for a fight.

Defeat the Mongols

Not much opportunity for stealth here, so once you break cover be prepared for eight Mongols, including two archers.

Speak with the villager

Once the area is secure, speak to the marked villager to proceed. You’ll discover that he’s been staying in the watchtower and helping the Mongols. So where is he going?

Search the watchtower

Investigate the nearby watchtower for clues to Yasuhira’s location. As you enter, on the left you’ll find two tables with a scroll and some white leaves on them.

Then examine the right wall and you’ll see a painting of a dueling ring

Speak with the woman

There’s nothing on the top of the tower, so go back outside and speak with the woman to find out where there are trees with white leaves nearby.

Look for the white-leafed tree

Inside the search area, check along the road just south of Shigenori’s Peak.

Travel to the white tree grove

Once Jin comments on the white-leafed trees, and you get the objective to find the grove, you can use your guiding wind to follow the trees to the grove.

Rescue the hostage

Along the way, you’ll encounter some Mongols interrogating a peasant.

In order to rescue the hostage, you will have to defeat all of the Mongols around his house. Unlike other hostages, you don’t have to worry about the Mongols slaughtering their prisoner if you accidentally alert them, so you can rush right in if you want. However, the Mongols are in positions that make it fairly easy to use stealth to pick them off one by one around the house. Either way, you won’t be able to speak to the hostage until all the enemies in the area are dealt with.

The villager tells you that Yasuhira took his grandfather, and headed for a dueling ring on the Komatsu coast.

Travel to Shigenori’s Rest

Mount up and head for the search area to the southwest. You will find a rocky hill that you can’t climb, but there is a tree that someone has cut down in order to cross over. When Jin comments on it, you know you’ve found the right area.

Enter Shigenori’s Rest

Go across the downed tree, and squeeze through the rocks into Shigenori’s Rest.

Defeat the Mongols

Again you’ll fight a ton of Mongols, but there are tall grass patches everywhere here and most of them are facing away from you at the start, making it easy to eliminate most of them through stealth. Start with the brute who is walking back and forth near the entrance.

Investigate Shigenori’s Rest

Once the Mongols are all taken care of, follow the waypoint up the stairs and you’ll find Shigenori’s dueling ring.

Investigate the dueling ring

There are several things to examine as you enter the ring, starting with the body of the kidnapped grandfather that you’ll find dead on the path as you enter.

Also examine a sword sticking out of a pool of blood, and the bloody footprints that lead away from it. After you finish examining all three times, Yasuhira will approach you.

Defeat Yasuhira

This is an epic duel, particularly if you’ve challenged Yasuhira near the beginning of the game before you’ve had a chance to level up your character. Block often, sidestepping unblockable attacks and counterattacking only when its safe to do so. Yasuhira is very fast, and will carve you up in only a few blows.

When Yasuhira sheathes his katana, be ready for him to launch an unblockable attack. Don’t try to preemptively attack him, because he’s usually quicker on the draw than you are. As he launches his unblockable attack, sidestep to one side using  :ls:  and  tapping :o:, then immediately attack him before he recovers. Don’t roll out by double tapping  :o: , or he will recover before you can close the distance for an attack.

Yasuhira also sidesteps, usually leading immediately with an unblockable attack. As soon as he sidesteps, roll out of range of his attack or sidestep and counterattack before he recovers.

Near the end of the fight, you’ll lock blades with Yasuhira and Jin will comment that he now understands the Heavenly Strike, and you’ll be prompted to use it on him by pressing  :tr: + :o: to bring the fight to a close.

Ouch.

Bury the man killed by Yasuhira

Go back to the dead grandfather, and press :r2: when prompted to end the mission.

This finishes  The Heavenly Strike mythic quest in Ghost of Tsushima.

The Quest can also trigger before Hammer and Forge are done

I got the dialogue to find the musician during the tale of Tadayori before Doing the Hammer and Forge tale

Maybe it will trigger for sure after completing hammer and forge, but it has also a chance to trigger before it since I completed Heavenly Strike just now and still have Hammer and forge next on my list of main tales to do
