Gold in Ghost of Tsushima is used for high-level Melee Weapon Upgrades. It’s one of the rarest materials in the game. The last few upgrades to your melee weapons will require some gold. Visit any swordsmith to upgrade your Katana and Tanto Dagger.
Here’s How to Get Gold:
- Gold is obtained as a fixed Reward for liberating Enemy Strongholds. Every Enemy Stronghold rewards you with 2 Gold. They are marked by a Red Building Icon on the map. You won’t get Gold from small Outposts (Red Dots) or Enemy Farms (Red Wheat Icon).
- Gold can be bought from Trappers in exchange for Supplies (for example, the one in 3rd Region at Jogaku Temple).

The one at Jogaku Temple (3rd region) was selling it for me. I updated it on the page, thanks for asking! =)
