Starting Location: Mondstadt
Find Iris near the northern border of the mountain of Dragonspine.
Talk to Iris
Iris tells you about some strange ice that has formed throughout Dragonspine. She asks you to investigate and find a way to deal with it.
Investigate the Strange Ice
Go south into Dragonspine. If you follow the path, several enemy groups appear along the way.
When you reach the spot, you come across the remnants of a massive tree stump with large ice peaks in it.
When you approach it, you see a strange blue apparatus but nothing happens when you interact with it or attack it.
In order to break up this particular ice, you need to power up your attack with a Scarlet Quartz. Find and break one of the red nodes.
Then, pick up the Scarlet Quartz, run back to the strange ice, and attack it. A quarter of its health bar goes down. Find three more Scarlet Quartz around the tree stump and use them all on the strange ice.
It’s worth mentioning that these must be done one at a time. Only one Scarlet Quartz can be held at one time.
After the fourth application of Scarlet Quartz, the ice melts down, and the apparatus shoots off somewhere higher on the mountain.
Continue upward to investigate
Use the path indicated in the map below to reach the next destination.
Do keep in mind that after you pass by the ice-shooting apparatus, take the broken ramp to the left instead of going into the cave.
When at the top of the ramp, look to your right. Be sure to unlock this Statue of the Seven.
When you try going into the cave, a strong wing keeps you from going any further in.
Go to the camp and ask for clues regarding the strange air current
Go back and talk to Iris at the small camp north of Dragonspine for help. To get that help, choose the dialogue choice “How are things here on Dragonspine?”
You tell her you managed to melt the strange ice but now need to deal with strong winds from inside a cave.
Thaw all the shards out – 3 Shard Locations
Shard #1: The ice you already thawed counts as your first shard.
Shard #2: Make your way down the path southwest from Wyrmrest Valley. Be sure to grab the Teleport Waypoint on your way in.
The puzzle here consists of five locked ice totems with a cube key in front of them. On top of the key floats a Warming Seelie.
The trick is to activate the key and then watch the order the Seelie takes between the totems.
Here’s the solution:
Open the Precious Treasure that appears by the key, and two Ruin Guards attack you. Take them both down.
Make sure to watch your Sheer Cold gauge and use the heat totems. These can be frustrating, because only one is unlocked at a time, and it changes which one is unlocked as well.
Once you fell the Ruin Guards, a Ruin Grader stands up to fight you. Defeat it.
Once it falls, the ice patch in the middle of the area falls down, revealing a cave.
Glide down into the cave to find the second shard. You will notice quite quickly that this small space only has three Scarlet Quartz nodes. First, use the three in the room on the shard.
To find the fourth node, find both Warming Seelies to open up the gate on the north end of the cave.
The first Seelie floats out in the open at the top of a large piece of ice. Follow it to its statue.
Two nearly dead Ruin Graders wake up and attack you. Quickly take them out.
The second Seelie hides inside a chunk of ice by the south end of the cave. Thankfully, this melts with Pyro attacks.
Attack it with Pyro and follow it to open the gate.
Go in the new area, grab the fourth Scarlet Quartz, and use it to thaw out the second shard.
Shard #3: Make your way to the Teleport Waypoint just northwest on the map of the Starglow Cavern text.
Walk toward the opening and head down the hole.
Follow the path down and left until you reach a large opening, with pathways that loop around both up and and down.
Make your way to the very bottom of this cavern to find the third shard. Unfortunately, this shard sits behind a shield.
The first step is to find two Seelies and lead them to their statues. The first is to the southeast corner of this area, right out in the open.
The second is behind the ice wall that houses the shard.
Follow the narrow path around to find a bunch of rubble. Attack it to reveal the Seelie.
Follow that one back out to its statue. This makes a challenge totem appear.
This fight is borderline awful if you attempt this at lower Adventure Ranks. It starts with enemies popping up in waves in different areas of a large space. Then, you get frozen all the time, due to the ice attacks enemies use and the body of water you need to fight over. Also, hilichurls build towers to shoot at you from. Oh, the timer makes it all the more stressful. Chunks of ice drop from the ceiling during the fight.
To top it all off, you need to watch out for Sheer Cold building up too much. There are only two heat sources in here unless you grab a Scarlet Quartz. Even then, Scarlet Quartz only keeps you temporarily just lower than the maximum Sheer Cold level. If you get hit while holding a Scarlet Quartz, you drop it immediately.
A better party build consists of at least Bennett. His healing Elemental Burst and quick Pyro Elemental Skill makes him quite helpful. Combine that with an Anemo character, like the Traveler, and that Pyro damage can do even more against large groups.
Pick up the Precious Chest that appears after you beat the challenge.
After beating the challenge, the shield around the shard disappears. The first two Scarlet Quartz nodes are around the water.
The third Scarlet Quartz is in the same place behind the crystals where you broke the rubble wall.
The fourth is in a cranny just to the east of the rubble wall. It sits among some broken Ruin Hunter parts.
Use all four Scarlet Quartz nodes on the shard to melt the third shard.
Look for a way up the mountain
Teleport back to the Statue of the Seven in Dragonspine and go back to the place where the strong wind kept you from progressing.
Continue deeper into the cave.
Head for Dragonspine’s summit
Use the two pillars in the water to reach the cliff on the other side. Dispatch the hilichurls that appear.
Then jump to the next cliff with a Warming Seelie. Near the Seelie is a sparkly butterfly. When you gather three of these, you create a wind current. From this butterfly, run up the ice shard to where the Seelie moved. Grab the second butterfly there.
Turn right and climb up onto the rock where the third butterfly is. Then glide up the wind current you create.
At the top of the wind current, turn to find the Seelie on another narrow cliff. Glide to it.
Follow the Seelie up another ice shard.
You now find yourself in a room with another massive crystal, with a warming pillar standing next to you.
Thaw all the shards out again
Before anything else, follow the rising path to the right along the wall to reach and unlock the Teleport Waypoint.
Here are three of the ice-shooting apparatus. You can’t do much about them right now, so just run by them and take a left to continue up the path.
Keep running around until you find a gateway next to a warming pillar.
Go through the gateway and defeat the Frostarm Lawachurl.
Once you defeat the Lawachurl, go to the Warming Seelie. Open the three chests there and then follow the Seelie up a pillar.
From there, glide to a fallen pillar that leads to a wall of snow. Follow the Seelie up the snow wall.
At the top, you find an Anemo Totem. Activate it and then ride the wind current that appears in front of you.
Glide through the wind gusts in front of you, which take you to the opposite side next to some hilichurls. Take them out for a chest.
Remember this spot because this is a Scarlet Quartz you’ll use a couple of times. Also remember that a Scarlet Quartz you hold will time out, so make sure to move quickly. Read ahead on some of these parts before proceeding.
Pick up this Scarlet Quartz, then look over the edge to see the first shard on a floating piece of pillar.
Glide down to the shard and break it.
Return to the aforementioned Scarlet Quarts and look over the edge again. The second shard sits across the gap a bit lower than the first one. Glide down to the shard and break it with the Scarlet Quartz.
Return again to the Scarlet Quartz and glide down to the third shard that’s further down.
It’s suggested to free fall for a bit so you get closer and then glide to the third shard.
After thawing the third shard, the pillar in the center of the area reforms and then elevates high into the sky.
Investigate the area below
You come out of the cutscene at the Teleport Waypoint next to the ice-shooting apparatus. Jump down to the snowy grass to see a new cavity, containing three chests and a domain entrance.
Jump down and open them.
Report back to Iris
Teleport back to the small camp and talk to Iris. Select the dialogue option “About the summit…” to continue the quest line.
You tell her about what you found, and she tells you of her plans to send expeditions to investigate further.
Finish this conversation to complete World Quest In The Mountains.
