Genshin Impact Custodian of Clouds Walkthrough

Custodian of Clouds is the fourth subquest in Chapter 1: Act 1, Of the Land Amidst Monoliths, an Archon Quest in Genshin Impact. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Custodian of Cloudss Archon Subquest.

Custodian of Clouds is unlocked automatically when you finish Moulder of Mountains.

Mission Description: Meet the Cloud Retainer at Mt. Aocang.

Starting Location: Mt. Hulao

Search for Cloud Retainer

Use the nearby Teleport Waypoint on Mt. Hulao and look straight out to the north.

Glide between the upheavals of rock to reach Mt. Aocang.

Glide the last length of the way to reach Mt. Aocang.

Climb up the rock face and then take the path up.

You come out at the edge of a big pool of water.

Before going forward, face the cliff to your left. Up the cliff on the other side is a Teleport Waypoint.

Climb up to unlock it, and then head back down to the pool of water.

Now, approach the tree in the middle of the pool of water.

Look for traces of food offerings (3)

Offering #1: After the conversation with Paimon, turn left and head west across the water. Continue west up a short incline to approach a camp.

Interact with the Lotus Heads and Snapdragon. You receive the recipe for Jewelry Soup.

Offering #2: From here, run to the northeast corner of the pool.

Right next to a cooking pot, interact with the Matsutake mushrooms. You get the recipe for Matsutake Meat Rolls.

Offering #3: Finally, run south to the southeast corner of the pool.

Here, all you find is a cooking pot over an unlit campfire. You and Paimon find a meat in the cooking pot and flour all over the ground. There’s also a recipe on the ground, but it’s illegible.

Offer up food to Cloud Retainer (3)

Use the cooking pot in front of you to cook the food. Use a Pyro character to light the campfire, then interact with the cooking pot.

Make the Jewelry Soup and the Matsutake Meat Rolls (scroll down if you need ingredients for these recipes).

The clue for the third recipe is combining meat and flour. The one recipe you are guaranteed to have that combines these two ingredients is Mora Meat. You received this recipe from a previous Archon quests.

After making the Jewelry Soup, Matsutake Meat Roll, and Mora Meat, return to the tree in the middle of the pool. Place each dish at each setpiece on the stone table.

Once you do, the seal on the cave entrance disappears.

If you don’t have all of the ingredients, follow the instructions below:

To get Tofu, go to the southeast Teleport Waypoint in Liyue Harbor.

Then just cross the walk and buy the Tofu from Dongsheng.

To get Flour, Lotus Head, and Matsutake, find Chef Mao a little bit east of Dongsheng in Liyue Harbor. He sells all three.

To get Snapdragon, go to Windrise and then head south to the river.

Plenty of Snapdragon grows there.

To get Raw Meat, attack any small animal you find, such as squirrels or boars, in Teyvet; or basically any small animal that is not a bird.

Search for Cloud Retainer

Head south into the cave entrance and “Visit the adeptus’ abode.”

Meet Cloud Retainer

First, head forward over the bridge of roots and stone.

Strike the statue with a Pyro attack, and ten slimes appear. Defeat them to unlock the cube gear.

Rotate the platform one time. It doesn’t matter if you choose clockwise or counterclockwise.

Cross the bridge to the middle platform and then continue to the next one. Defeat the hilichurls you find there and another gear unlocks.

Go to the gear and turn it clockwise one time. This way, you can reach the platform on your left.

Here, you find five locked pillars in front of a raised platform, which has three locked chests on it. Go up to the platform and interact with the gear to start the challenge.

The challenge is to trigger the correct pillars in the correct order. Use Pyro abilities to trigger the pillars.

In this one, the order is 1, 5, 4. Complete this first challenge, and the first chest unlocks.

Activate the gear again to start the second challenge. This time, the order is 3, 5, 1, 4. Complete this challenge, and the second chest unlocks.

Activate the gear one more time to start the final challenge. The order on this one is 2, 4, 1, 5, 3. After this, the final chest unlocks, and a wind current appears at the pillar directly northwest of you.

Head back down the glowing path and turn right to the previous gear. Now, click counterclockwise one time to reach the platform on your right.

Before gliding on the wind current, go around to the other side of the round platform to find a chest hidden behind some boxes.

Jump into the wind current and glide your way up a short distance to a platform above you.

On this platform, use the gear to turn one time in whichever direction you choose. Then cross the two golden bridges to the next platform.

The next task is to light all six of the Pyro pillars. The trick is that if you hit one pillar, then the two adjacent ones change their current state. Hit the pillars in the order shown below to solve the puzzle, and don’t forget to grab the chest.

Finally, use the new gear one time in whichever direction you wish. Cross the new path, then head up the short stairs through the archway to meet Cloud Retainer.
