First Challenge
After the initial cutscene, you will be playing as Yuffie on the Outskirts of the Sector 7 Slums with the objective of reaching town to meet up with your contact. Follow the linear path to meet your first two enemies and get some tutorial on Yuffie’s fighting style. When they’re defeated go through the hole in the nearby building by the Moogle poster to fight to more, then out the other side. Destroy the boxes when prompted on the nearby towers to potentially get some items.
Go across the bridge, throwing to break more boxes as you go by the opening on the left, then to the area at the end to fight a Lesser Drake and two more Toxirats. When finished go underneath the partially open door underneath the next Moogle poster.
Mark of the Moogle
Follow the path, then when prompted throw your weapon up at the elevator button to bring it down to you, then ride it up.
Power… Down?
After the elevator defeat the two next enemies, then continue following the path. Here you have to ways you can progress, either under the overhead door with the Moogle poster or down to the lower floor on the right. You first want to drop down to the lower area.
First, go over in the corner to find a chest containing 2 Hi-Potions, then throw your weapon at the elevator and ride it up to find a Hp Up Materia on the upper floor. Then you can go back up the ladder to the prior area and underneath the door with the Moogle poster.
Outside continue following the path, then take an immediate right around the yellow bin to find another chest that will contain a Power Wristguards.
Don’t Fear, Yuffie’s Here
Continue following the linear path under you reach a large gap where you will see a cutscene of another man in dark robes being attacked by monsters. To reach him climb the nearby tower up both ladders, then throw your weapon at the yellow crane to drop the beams, allowing you to cross.
Go across to where the man is and defeat the two Wayward Wolves. When they are defeated there will be a gate with another Moogle poster. Before going through it follow the large pit around clockwise where you can find a ladder to climb up another tower. At the top you can find a Wind Materia.
Go back down and then continue through the gate with the Moogle poster. In the tunnel instead of turning right to go to the exit go to the dead-end and you can find a chest containing 1,000 Gil.
Follow the tunnel until you exit a building, then across the long bridge and through the marked gate. You will end up in an area that should be familiar from the main game, Scrap Boulevard just west of the Sector 7 Slums. Follow the left wall to go into the tunnels where you can find an MP Up Materia.
Continue east through Scrap Boulevard until you go through the gate into the Sector 7 Slums proper.
Esteemed Avalanche Colleagues
Inside the slums, you will see a cutscene where Yuffie finally meets her contact Zhijie, then follow him to a nearby building.
When inside go down the stairs, then immediately turn left to find a purple chest that contains Boomerang weapon. Then go to the other side of the room to meet the other Avalanche members.
Gain Intel
After the introduction, you want to talk to the 3 Avalanche members twice each to advance the story and get information on side activities that you can do this chapter.
Billy Bob
Billy Bob informs you about the VR Combat simulation that Chadley is running.
Polk
Polk tells you about a game called Fort Condor, which is a strategy game where you play vs another opponent. He automatically runs you through a tutorial when you first talk to him.
Discovery – Mastering Fort Condor
After running through the tutorial with Polk you have the ability to challenge people around the area to Fort Condor in exchange for rewards. See the below guide for info about the minigame and strategy for beating opponents first playthrough:
» Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Remake Fort Condor Guide
Winning against all Fort Condor opponents awards you with an AP Up Materia.
Nayo
Nayo tells you about another Wutai citizen in the area named Old Snapper. You can go speak to him for a side quest related to finding flyers around the slums.
Scout Out Sector 7
After talking to all 3 members you will have to go do a couple of things before while you wait for Sonon to return to base.
Combat Simulator
Chadley will be sitting in the same location he is during the main story.
Speak to him to have him explain the combat simulator, where you can choose to engage in a Summon fight against Ramuh.
Discovery – Chadley’s Research
Boss Fight: Ramuh
The fight against Ramuh works the same as the VR simulator fights during the main game, where you are transported to a large circular arena and fight against the summon as a boss in order to earn its material to use yourself.
Ramuh is weak to Wind magic, so if you picked up the Wind Materia before entering the slums it would be a good idea to equip it before starting. Ramuh’s attacks themselves are all lightning-based and will absorb lightning attacks if they are used against it. Many attacks he does will also stun you, so you want to avoid them wherever possible.
Levin Arrows – For this attack Ramuh launches a number of bolts around the area, one always directly at where you are standing so make sure to dodge out of the way. The bolts linger on the ground and if you accidentally run into the area around one then you can be stunned for a short duration.
Voltaic Lance – This attack is like Levin Arrows, except it’s a single large bolt that will be launched directly at your location. Time your dodge just before it is about to be thrown out to avoid damage from it.
Thunderous Orbs– For this attack, Ramuh will launch a set of 3 orbs towards you one after the other. They have some tracking towards you but can be dodged relatively easily by continually moving to either side until all three are launched.
Lightning Strike – Similar to Thunderous Orbs, this is a set of 4 lightning strikes that will occur one after the other directly where you are standing. Like the orbs you can continually dodge to the side to avoid them.
Luminous Falchion – This attack is a set of up to 3 melee swings directly towards where you are standing. You either need to either have very good timed dodges or guard against the attacks. If you have good timing with your block you can hit right when the swing is about to connect and totally block damage from it.
Charged Current – This is a large area attack that Ramuh will perform if you are sitting too close for too long. He will strike the ground causing a large blast around him. Dodge directly away from him to avoid it.
Circuitous Bolt – Later in the fight Ramuh might start performing this attack, which causes 3 rotating beams to appear around him for a short period. Either stay outside the range of them or jump over them.
Orbiting Wand – Another attack Ramuh will start performing later in the fight, he throws a rotating bolt that circles around him for a short period like the Circuitous Bolt beams, so it can be avoided in a similar manner.
Summon Sparks / Judgment Bolt – Once you get his health down around half Ramuh might perform the Summon Sparks attack, which causes 3 Spark enemies to appear around the area tethered to him. You need to destroy these Spark enemies (or defeat Ramuh) quickly, or else after a period, he will perform the attack Judgment Bolt which is his instakill attack and will cause you to lose the fight if he hits you with it.
Winning the fight against Ramuh will award you with the Ramuh Materia.
The Happy Envoy
Head southeast of the Avalanche building to find Old Snapper, the man dressed like a turtle waving around a wooden sign.
Discovery – The Happy Turtle Ad Campaign
For this side quest, Old Snapper wants you to find some Happy Turtle flyers hidden around the area. See the below post for all flyer locations:
» Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Remake All Happy Turtle Flyers Locations
Now that you’ve been to both Chadley and Old Snapper you can return to base to meet Sonon when ready, but there are some items around the slums that you can grab first if you haven’t already.
You may already have seen this blue Materia while following Zhijie to the Avalanche’s Base. It’s in the area directly northwest of Avalanche’s Base. Enter through the scrap tunnel in the northwest corner of this area into the open area with all the children, see the in-game map for the path that leads there and pick up the Warding Materia at the back.
In a chest in the southeast corner of the Residential Area, near one of the turtle posters you can find the Fort Condor Card: Riot Trooper Barracks (Defense).
On the rooftop of the motel (where Cloud stays during the main story) you can find a Chakra Materia. You must first talk to Old Snapper, who is marked as a main objective on the map. He gives you a quest for finding six turtle flyers. One flyer is at the motel and requires you to sneak towards the sleeping dog and pick up the flyer to his left. Then you can climb up the roof behind the dog to grab this.
From the Pillar Plaza (east of Residential Area, path leading to the train station) you can enter the fenced area to the Factory. Reach the end of the factory (its northeast room) and defeat the two scorpion-looking enemies there to find the First Strike Materia behind some breakable boxes.
Still inside the Factory area in the southwest corner, you can find this second Chakra Materia in some breakable boxes.
Still inside the Factory area in the northernmost room, destroy the wooden crates to reveal a chest containing Fort Condor Card: Monodrive (Ranged).
The Handoff
When ready to continue, head back to the Avalanche HQ where you will finally meet Sonon. Once introductions are complete and you’re ready to continue go outside and talk to Nayo, then follow her through the Slums with more cutscenes along the way. When you reach the Municipal Storage Area you can rest at the bench if needed before proceeding. You will be attacked by three of Don Corneo’s lackeys, and will be given a tutorial on how fighting with Sonon works.
After you are done fighting, continue following Nayo to obtain your ID cards from the contact.
Back to Base
Head out the other side of this building and down the new path. At the end will be a wall you can break to get back to near the bench, and there will be a chest directly beside it containing a Kindred Cord Accessory.
Change of Plans
You will receive a message from Zhijie about plans changing and to head to the pillar. Continue following Nayo over towards the train station.
After Him
Zhijie runs off away from some guards. If you need you have an opportunity right now to purchase items if needed, otherwise continue following the objective towards the train station then through the open gate at the fence in the back. While passing through the next area you should see a purple chest out in the open which contains the Indurate Staff Weapon for Sonon.
You’ll see Zhijie run away from the guards again, and you can follow after him down the yellow pole.
Tracking Zhijie
Follow the path across to the next platform where you will fight 2 Cripshay. When they are dealt with throw your weapon at the switch on the next platform to stop the conveyor, allowing you to proceed.
To go to the next area you would take the yellow pole up to the left, but first, go down the stairs to the right. There will be 3 more Cripshay to deal with, then you can open the chest in the corner that contains the Fort Condor Card: Sweeper (Ranged).
Go back and up the yellow pole to continue. At the top, you’ll deal with the 2 Security Officers that were chasing Zhijie.
Conveyor Belt Bedlam
You need to find the switch that stops the next conveyor. Take the path to the left of the large I beams and look left through the gap in the fence. You should see the switch behind the line of containers on the conveyor. Time your throw between the containers to stop the conveyor.
Instead of proceeding along the now stopped conveyor, go down the ladder nearby into the lower area. Continue to the back where you can find 2 Lesser Drakes flying around. Deal with them, then in the corner, you can pick up a Prayer Materia.
Go back up the ladder and across the now-stopped conveyor. In the next room, you stand on a large metal platform and activate a switch to move it down the conveyor belt. While it’s moving there are breakable boxes on the outside platforms you can throw your weapon at to gain some items.
Double Back
There will be a cutscene where Yuffie falls to a lower area, and you need to make your way back to the upper level. Follow the path into an open area where you will deal with a Horned Cripshay enemy that drops a Gozu Drive Accessory when defeated.
Go up the yellow pole in the corner and follow the path to a yellow climbing wall. Before going on it there is a purple chest to the left that contains the Steel Reaper Weapon for Yuffie.
Go along the climbing wall to the next area where you will fight 2 more Security Officers. Before going across the conveyor jump across the metal barricade that leads to the set of stairs leading up. Around the corner behind the switch (this is the one Zhijie was at when Yuffie fell down) you can find a chest containing an Elixir. Going down this stopped conveyor just leads back to the prior area, so there’s no point running down it.
Go back and hit the switch to stop the next conveyor belt to continue.
This area has more yellow climbing walls, but now you get to move them around yourself to proceed through the area. Hit the first switch directly in front of you, then the one down on the lower level to move both sections of the number 3 wall to get down to the lower area.
Continue up the stairs, then go to the left where the 3 Toxirat area. When they area dealt with continue up the left stairs and you can find a chest ahead which contains the Fort Condor Board: Assassin Board III.
Head up the stairs where you will deal with a Wrath Hound, then you will have more switches to pull. Hit the number 2 switch then take the climbing wall across.
Then at the top look back down and hit it again to move the wall back to where it was before so you can continue.
On the next platform there will be 2 Wayward Wolves to deal with, then a bunch more switch puzzles. First, look down into the center of the area where the number 1 switch is and hit it once.
Go to the north side of the platform you are on and up the climbing wall to a platform where you can find 3 Gorgers and a chest containing a Turbo Ether.
Go back and then across the climbing wall on the other side leading to the lower platform. Look to the middle and hit the switch to move the wall to right beside you.
On this climbing wall, you want to take the path leading up instead of straight across. You can then go to the corner of this platform and hit the switch in the middle again moving the wall back, which then allows you to climb to the middle platform.
On the middle platform, you can pick up an Elemental Materia.
Go back up the climbing wall, then you can go down a pole in the corner of this platform and not need to deal with any more switching. Continue up the next climbing wall and up the yellow pole to the next area. You’ll need to deal with another enemy, a Levrikon, then you will be awarded the Mezu Drive Accessory when it’s defeated.
Climb up the ladder out of this area and you will then have another long conveyor belt ride with a ton of breakable boxes you can destroy for items.
Main Pillar Maintenance
Once done continue down the long line of stopped containers into the Pillar Maintenance area. At the end of the line you should first jump off to the left, where you can find a Magic Up Materia.
Save Zhijie
When inside the building follow the walkway all the way to the very end to find a Lightning Materia along with a bench and vending machine.
When ready to continue, follow the path down the set of stairs.
Boss Fight: Gigantipede
The final boss for this chapter, you are fighting against a large mechanical centipede. The primary ways to damage it are by hitting its head with normal physical attacks, or hitting its tail with lightning attacks, rapidly filling the stagger gauge. The Elemental Ninjutsu ability from Yuffie’s 4-Point Shuriken is helpful here because you can cast lightning on it then throw it at the tail to deal elemental damage from a safe distance. You can also use Synergy with Sonon then attack the head to deal a lot of damage quickly.
In the first part of the fight, it primarily will walk around, shooting you with guns if you are beside it, and swiping its tail. If you are in front of it and it does an attack called Containment Laser you want to move out from inside the red area because it will launch tracking rockets at you as long as you are inside the area with the laser pointed at you.
Once the boss reaches half of its health bar it will run off the side of the platform, then appear on the wall. It will launch Containment Drones at you which will allow it to shoot its tracking rockets at you again, so try to take them out with Yuffie’s thrown shuriken as quickly as you can.
After a while it swings its way back onto the main platform, allowing you to continue damaging it like before. When it reaches a third health remaining it will remove the covering on its head revealing a large spinning set of sharp objects.
It will deploy drones down here which you should take out quickly, then focus lighting attacks on the tail again, as attacking the head damages you. If the boss enters Pressered status you can attack the head though, and it would be a good time to do Synergy with Sonon and use the Synergized abilities you have to finish it off.
When the boss is finished off you will automatically go back to the Sector 7 Slums.
Shinra Building or Bust
When you return the Avalanche HQ has been compromised. Purchase anything you need from vendors, then head to the train station to complete the chapter.
This finishes Chapter 1: Wutai’s Finest in Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission DLC. Now the mission Chapter 2: Covert Ops starts.
