Weiss is a new boss in the Yuffie Intermission DLC of Final Fantasy VII Remake. He’s arguably the hardest boss in the game and it requires a specific strategy to defeat him.
In this guide we’ll go through the best method to defeat Weiss quickly.
Weiss Boss Locations
Weiss becomes available as a boss after finishing the Yuffie Intermission DLC (2 Chapters). You can then find Weiss in a new Combat Simulator Challenge, at the Chapter 17 Combat Simulator in the Main Game (not inside the Yuffie DLC area). You should already be familiar with the Combat Simulator if you finished the Main Game – it’s after the first enemy spawn in Chapter 17, in the next hallway.
When you go to the Combat Simulator a cutscene will play that introduces Weiss. Chadley warns you that he was reluctant to add such a powerful enemy to the Simulator. Play the 7-star Challenge “Three-Person Team vs The Immaculate One”.

First of all, don’t even bother attempting this if you haven’t beaten the main game on hard yet or haven’t finished the Pride and Joy Prototype boss (the other 7-star Combat Simulator Challenge). You’d have a very bad time. Also, if you just picked up the Yuffie DLC and haven’t played the main game recently, replay Fat Chocobo in Chadley’s VR challenge a bunch of times to relearn how to efficiently increase Stagger % using Tifa. It is absolutely essential you know how to stagger enemies to 300% damage, otherwise you’d only waste your time on Weiss.
General Strategy: Evade his charged stabs/slashes, when he misses those attacks he becomes “Pressured”. Then quickly attack him to increase Pressure on him and repeat until he becomes staggered. You have to stagger him in his 1st phase (before he summons his ranged energy weapon). Otherwise it’s best to restart right away. You have to take down half his health during the first stagger or else you’ll have a very bad time. The problem is that in his third phase he starts healing himself and he will do a slash with 9999 damage that can instantly wipe your entire team (casting Barrier can prevent it or having Reprieve skill on a weapon). You must try to defeat him by his 2nd phase. In his 2nd phase spam Thundaga or Firaga until he’s dead (can cast Arcane Ward with Aerith to use each spell twice & Lustrous Shield to block his projectiles in 2nd phase).

Phase 1 (Weiss Melee Phase)
Step 1: Immediately switch to playing as Tifa. You’ll want to play only her in the 1st phase. Weiss instantly targets whatever character you’re in control of, don’t switch between characters. Press to use abilities / spells of other characters.
Step 2: Cast Magnify-Haste with Cloud (makes ATB recharge faster for all characters). Also use him to cast Barrier on Tifa. Always refresh these two spells on Tifa when they run out!
Step 3: Because Tifa has Parry Materia equipped you can hold and press to slide away from Weiss. You can also slide in close circles around him. When you dodge his charged stab/slash (“Crosswise Cleave” / “Evisceration)”, it wil show “Pressured” on him. That’s when Tifa must attack with 3-4 attacks, then use her ability “Focused Strike” (it greatly increases Pressure when it hits). Repeat this cycle until he’s staggered (when the orange bar below his health is full). Also buff yourself with Unbridled Strength ability twice before staggering him (this is important for later when Weiss becomes staggered, more on that in next step).
Step 4: You should aim to stagger him in his 1st phase, before he switches to his 2nd phase (ranged). If you can’t do it in time, it’s better to restart the match. Before you stagger him, make sure everyone has 2 ATB charges ready, especially Tifa. When he’s staggered immediately press to cast 2x Thundaga each with Cloud/Aerith (so 4 Thundagas in total), while using Tifa’s True Strike > True Strike > Rise and Fall ( ability, this is why you are supposed to buff yourself twice with Unbridled Strength beforehand). Keep using attacks with Tifa and again use her True Strike when your ATB has recharged. This Tifa Combo massively increases Stagger Damage % to get him to 250-300% Stagger. Cloud/Aerith are the damage dealers with their magic damage builds and Thundagas. This should manage to take down half of Weiss’s health in one stagger phase.
Phase 2 (Weiss Ranged Phase)
Step 5: Weiss will enter his 2nd phase immediately after the stagger (he will use a ranged energy weapon now). Distract him with Tifa and let everyone’s ATB refill to 1 bar. Then switch to Aerith and cast Lustrous Shield (stops his projectiles) & Arcane Ward (casts each spell twice). Now you’ll want to switch between characters to lure Weiss away from the Arcane Ward Area. Keep spamming Thundaga (or Firaga if you don’t have 3x Thundaga Materia). Before casting these, try to walk the character into the Arcane Ward area for a double-attack. Mainly keep playing with Tifa because her + makes it really easy to slide behind Weiss’s back and land some punches to recharge ATB. As soon as anyone has 1 ATB filled you immediately cast their Thundaga or Firaga, it will disrupt Weiss for a moment. Also reapply Magnify-Haste for faster ATB recharge. Keep spamming the Thundaga/Firaga spells until he’s dead. You might even stagger him a 2nd time using these, then finish him off during the Stagger.
If he enters his 3rd phase you took too long and your hopes for a victory are not looking great. He will start healing himself in the 3rd phase, but if he’s nearly dead you should be able to finish him off with some more Thundagas / Firagas. If he heals faster than you can damage him, it’s better to restart and try to defeat him by his 2nd phase.
Refer to the video guide for a visual demonstration. It’s one of the trickiest fights in the game. Weiss is super fast and aggressive, it will take some practice to dodge his attacks perfectly. There’s no time to waste and you have to keep pressuring him as quickly as possible, which means evading his attacks as perfectly as possible.

No matter how hard I try I keep getting hit by his slash attacks, I dont know where I’m going wrong. I also dont have all of the manuscripts, how important are they to this fight?
Justpassingby says
The manuscripts help to increase your HP, MP, do more damage, takes less damage, do critical damages, etc.
Better get them all.

How many times does Thundaga need to be done in phase 2? I’ve hit him nearly 8 times with it while in Aerith’s ward and it hasn’t done that great of damage to him.
Danny says
I setup the Arcane Ward on Cloud as soon as Tifa staggers, make sure everyone has full ATB for the stagger. Cloud/Aerith casts -ga level spells(I used Thundaga) and Tifa builds stagger with 2 True Strikes and triangle attacks. ATB should recharge a little with ATB assist so you can pull off more magic spells before the stagger finishes. Health was down to about a 1/4 and I beat him in second phase with plenty of time to the next phase shift with more magic attacks(physical damage doesn’t affect him in gun phase). Just be sure to learn the moveset from first and second phases, once you practice a handful of times, they’re easy to dodge and work around.

I used a different strategy. I used Tifa, Aerith and Barret. Equip Tifa with ATB Stagger, Skill Master and ATB Assist. Also equip Refocus and the Gotterdammerung. The Gotterdammerung makes you start with half a limit break bar. The game says it won’t work but it does. Refocus gives Tifa 3 ATB bars which makes it much easier to get Weiss above 300% stagger. When he is staggered, spam True Strike with Tifa and use Ray of Judgement and Focused Shot with Barret. I also used the Reprieve weapons with each character. Was able to kill him in his third phase.
Trevor Stempert says
Summon Bahamut when he’s nearing the end of phase 2. When you have him near low health (about 1/4 of the way down or less, bahamut will do it’s final attack and it should take him out. This is how I beat him. This guide is great though.
Substitute the ice magic that they say to use for HP up on your characters instead and the fight will be way easier.
Rob says
Good guide! I also tweaked my strategy after failing with this exact strategy. Put the gotterdammerung on cloud (and hard edge sword), and used refocus on tifa. When staggered, jacked the stagger meter up as much as possible the usual ways and used clouds limit before stagger completed. This got weiss damn near KOd, so phase 2 was just a handful of thundagas. Had bahumet summoned but Weiss was dead before bahumets ultimate.

Weiss was surprisingly easy and fun for me to beat, was able to do it on my first try w/ no problems!

Just want to say thank you for this write up. It made the fight a lot easier to understand.
The only changes I ended up having to make were removing the redundant elemental materia spells in favor of some MP ups because I was running out of MP on my attempts.
Cheers, cant wait for rebirth and your guides for it when i get frustrated!
