Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Remake The Price of Thievery Walkthrough

April 6, 2020 by Darth_Krid 34 Comments

The Price of Thievery is a side quest in Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Remake. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Price of Thievery Side Mission (Odd Job).

The Price of Thievery becomes available in Chapter 9 when you complete ‘The Underground Colosseum’ main objective AND made the choices listed in the requirements below.

Side Quest: The Price of Thievery
Chapter:
9
Area:
Sector 6 Slums – Wall Market
Quest Giver: Mireille
Requirement: Make the following choices in Chapter 9:

  • Sam Dialogue (Chocobo Cowboy): When describing Tifa to him pick “She’s great at handling the books”.
  • In Wall Market, don’t talk to the guy in front of the hotel and don’t talk to the hotel receptionist.
  • In Wall Market, Ignore the Johnny Discovery Event (where he runs away) and head straight for the main objective.
  • When Sam does the coin flip, pick “Heads”.
  • Pick the most expensive massage “Luxury Course – 3000 Gil”
  • When Aerith asks how you like her outfit “Looks comfortable”.
  • Complete ‘The Underground Colosseum’ main objective & “Parting Ways” main objective.

Reward: Real Calling Card, HP/MP restored, Manuscript: The Art of Swordplay Vol. VIII (Hard Difficulty Only)
Mission Info: Mireille asks you to hunt down a group of bandits who are hiding somewhere in the collapsed expressway. Smoke them out.

Objectives:

  • Head to the Expressway Tunnel and kill the bandits
  • Return to Mireille

Starting Location: The Price of Thievery

Warning: This Side Quest requires specific choices in Chapter 9, see the requirements listed above and replicate them exactly. If you make different choices you get two alternate quests instead A Dynamite Body, The Party Never Stops (click on them for their requirements). These optional quests are also needed for the “Best in the Business” trophy, which you can do after the story in chapter select. Since they cancel out the alternate Chapter 9 quests you can only do one or the other on the 1st playthrough.

Head to the Expressway Tunnel and kill the bandits

Head south to Evergreen Park, then north through the expressway tunnel to confront the bandits. It’s yet another showdown against the Beck trio and also a Grungy Bandit who they’ve brought along. Just like before, these guys pose almost zero threat and you can dispatch them with ease.

Return to Mireille

You automatically return to Mireille and you obtain the ‘Real Calling Card’ and have your HP and MP restored.

This finishes The Price of Thievery side quest in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Now the mission Shears’ Counterattack becomes available.

Important for Best in the Business Trophy: To get this quest you must ignore the Johnny Discovery Event in Chapter 9 Wall Market which locks you out of the 2 alternate Side Quests The Party Never Stops, A Dynamite Body. After the story you unlock Chapter Select and can get these 2 alternate quests via chapter select without having to replay the entire game. Once you did all 26 side quests you get trophy “Best in the Business”. You can’t get all 26 side quests in a single playthrough.

Ignored Johnny but this didn’t work. Something else must be the trigger because I still got the party never stops quest.

Here are all the choices I made when I triggered this quest (one of them might affect the quest’s availability): When you talk to Sam (Chocobo Cowboy), I picked “She’s great at handling the books”. I then ignored the Johnny Discovery Event and went straight for the main objective. I never visited the hotel and didn’t talk to the guy in front of hotel and not the receptionist either. When Sam does the coin flip I don’t recall if I picked Heads or Tails (80% sure I picked Heads, 20% sure I picked Tails, 100% sure I didn’t pick “no deal”), and I picked the most expensive massage for 3000 Gil (don’t think this affects anything). On Aerith’s outfit I commented “Looks comfortable”. Please try replicating all these choices, if you could confirm if these exact steps worked for you that’d be great to narrow it down.

When I got the 2 oppsosite quests (The Party Never Stops / A Dynamite Body) I chose Sam’s first dialogue “She’s in good shape”, did the Johnny discovery and picked his first dialogue “Yeah”, talked to guy in front of hotel “How much?”, talked to hotel receptionist “Stay the Night”, during Coin Flip I picked “No Deal”, and picked the least expensive massage “Poor Man’s Course” for 100 Gil.

      This needs further testing.

Doing / not doing Johnny Discovery is what worked for me and some friends but there might be more to it or it’s just random. Another difference for me was that I didn’t go to the hotel, maybe spending the night has some effect.

While I investigate further, my suggestion is to replay the chapter (make manual save before reaching Wall Market / talking to Sam) and replicate my above choices exactly. I am certain other chapter choices don’t impact this, as the first thing I did after story was replaying Chapter 9 for these two quests so no other chapter choices had changed.

Hmm my first playthrough I was doing blind and I got madam M’s side quests. My choices were.
Describing tifa to Sam “shes in great shape”
I did the Johnny discovery event
I visited the hotel and said how much I talked to the receptionist but didn’t stay a night.
Sam’s coin flip I chose heads
For the massage I did the most expensive option.
With the aerith look option I chose it matter what I think?
With those done I got madam M’s side quests. I don’t know how much this helps but the only things we did the same for Madam M’s were not staying in the hotel, the coin flip, and the message.

My choices to get this quest:
      – Sam Dialogue (Chocobo Cowboy): “She’s great at handling the books”.
      – In Wall Market, when the guy in front of the hotel asks if we need a room, I chose get lost or something along that.
      – In Wall Market, did not ignore the Johnny Discovery Event (where he runs away) and head straight for the main objective.
      – When Sam does the coin flip, picked “no deal”
      – Pick the cheapest massage 100 Gil one.
      – When Aerith asks how you like her outfit “Looks comfortable”.

Here are the choices I made before getting this quest:

      * Tails
      * She’s a fighter
      * Standard massage for 1000 gil (looks like there’s no need to spend the extra 2k?)
      * Looks comfortable
      * Did the Johnny Discovery Event
      * When asked if I wanted a room, I said “How much?” and Aerith was all like “Cloud!”

I can confirm, after speaking to sam for the first time! selected shes good with the books, after that go straight to corneos mansion, when leslie mentions the trio, go straight to sam, pick heads, then andrea, then finally madam m, select 3000 gil option, once done say the dress is comfortable, then do the colloseum, head back to madam m and she will give the price of thievery quest.

hope this helps, it was driving me up the wall

Thanks for confirming! I’ve updated it in the guide. We still need to narrow it down what EXACTLY the trigger is of all these things.
If anyone else has issues with the quest not unlocking, or can confirm the above to work that’d be great 🙂

Has to be done on the same save-file, seperate saves don’t work or are useless since it’s tied to your main progress-profile. There’s chapter select once finishing the game.

      Tifa’s dress:
Do all side-quests in chapter three, then the optional/missable “Discovery Event” that ends in making one of three choices how she should dress.

      Aerith’s dress:
Determined by the number of side-quests done in chapter 8: none, at least 3 or all.

      Cloud’s dress:
      Choice-related in chapter 9, and doing side-quests.

I said she was fit, I chose tails, ignored Johnny, bought the 3000 Gil package, didn’t go to the hotel, and said does it matter what I think for Aerith’s original outfit. I’m thinking it has to be random. Or a different trigger?

    -“No deal” on coin flip
    -“Luxury Course – 3000 Gil
    -“Looks comfortable”

FYI: I thought I had blown it when checking the to-do list as I didn’t know most of these, but I went over to Sam any way and this quest was still available. In case there is a difference, I’ve done the below on hard difficulty.

“Sam Dialogue (Chocobo Cowboy): When describing Tifa to him pick “She’s great at handling the books”.

Me: Choose this and choose She’s a great fighter”

“In Wall Market, don’t talk to the guy in front of the hotel and don’t talk to the hotel receptionist.”

    Me: Rested in the Inn.

In Wall Market, Ignore the Johnny Discovery Event (where he runs away) and head straight for the main objective.

    Me: Ignored this as well

“When Sam does the coin flip, pick “Heads”.

    Me: I chose heads too.

“Pick the most expensive massage “Luxury Course – 3000 Gil”

    Me: Did this too.

“When Aerith asks how you like her outfit “Looks comfortable”.

    I choose “It’s alright”

Hopefully thsat helps people who are struggling.

1st playthrough. Can’t remember if said good shape or fighter, definitely didn’t pick good with books. Chose Heads, said no thanks to guy outside hotel, no thanks to receptionist, luxury massage, ignored johnny’s discovery event, took the drink and got Sam’s quests not Madam M’s.

On my current 2nd playthrough I picked good shape, let Aerith make coin toss choice, didn’t talk to guy at hotel or the receptionist, took standard massage, didn’t take the drink, ignored johnny’s discovery event and this time got Madam M’s quests. So I really have no clue as to what causes the quest decision options considering what others have observed

I got this quest doing the following:
I beat the game. Playing chapter 9 on easy
when i reached SAM, i picked up that she is good at combat or something like this. ( sorry can’t remember but it is related to good fighter or so)
When i heard about three trip, i ran to Andrea==>Madam M==> Sam
on coin , i chosed the 3rd option ( no thanks)
I did not run close to the hotel or to johny
I only interacted with Johny in the rest room before the colloseum match starts
i have completed Aeris and cloud optional encounters in the colloseum

thats everything i have done, hopefully this would help

I also want to mention that while you do this quest, equip the steal Materia. When you fight the thieves, get the big guy with red shirt down to 50% and command steal, you get a champion belt which is BIS for some characters.

Yeah, this is a good tip. I had just finished the squat challenge with Jules and knew the Champion Belt was very strong, so when I saw it on this guy’s Steal list so I made sure to get it from him during the fight.

Did this on easy for the dress trophy and did this:

Picked She’s great at handling the books.
    Ignored Johnny
    Picked the cheapest massage.

    Got Madam M’s quests.

Played again in Hard (second time doing hard) to get the two quests I never did the first time for the Manuscripts.

I did everything the exact same except I said She’s in great shape. That’s all.

I got Sam’s quests instead. One change and I have different quests. I don’t want to be doing the movable arm nonsense and fighting Hell House repeatedly on hard because this seems to be random. I needed Madam M’s quests on hard.

I did this on hard mode and got price of thievery:
Finished all quests in chapter 8, including Mireille’s slum angel
    “She’s a great fighter”
Went to corneo’s palace, ignoring Johnny
Went to see Sam 1st, chose heads
    Saw Honeybee 2nd
    Madam M’s 3rd
Chose “matter what I think” about Aerith’s outfit
“I don’t need it” to mystery drink before first fight
I personally think it has to do with who you see last of the 3: Sam last-party never stops quest
    See Madam last-price of thievery

Just got this quest and did Johnny’s discovery event. THE ONLY difference is I selected “no” at his question. I believe the response to his discovery quest is the ONLY thing that makes a difference in what quests you get.

The trigger is the first question by Sam when you arrive in wall market…
I played this chapter multiple times for different trophy things …

If you choose ‘she’s in great shape’ you get Sam’s requests..

If you choose ‘she’s a great fighter’ or ‘she’s great at handling the books’ you get madam M requests…

Pretty darn sure the other stuff don’t matter and when checking through comments above, this holds true..
