A Trap Is Sprung starts when you complete Light the Way.
Area: Mako Reactor 5
Requirement: Complete Chapter 6: Light the Way
Objectives:
- Reach Mako Storage
- Down the Pipe
- Escape from the Reactor
- Sentenced to Death
- Monitor Data
- Status of the Airbuster
- Storm the Gates
- Disable the Security Lock
- Discovery: Waste Recovery
Reach Mako Storage
You start the chapter already on the inside of the Reactor, so no breaking in the front again. Proceed around the walkway to the end.
Down the Pipe
To proceed down you will need to jump over the railing on the large pipe coming out of the wall. At the bottom look to the left under the pipe to find a chest that contains 3 Hi-Potions.
Continue down the path into the reactor proper. Once you come out of the hallway you’ll be attacked by a group of Monodrives, which you should scan now as you couldn’t last time you fought them.
Go down the ladder, and as soon as you reach the bottom there will be a chest right beside where Tifa is standing at the railing, containing 2 Echo Mist.
Continue on the walkway and deal with the next group of enemies, a couple each of Slug-Rays and Monodrives. Before going down the next ladder there is another chest you can grab, containing an Ether.
In the next area you will have to fight two Sweepers, as well as a new type of turret called a Laser Cannon. They are basically an upgraded version of the Sentry Ray cannons, so normal rules apply too. Use Barret to take them out quickly, then focus the two Sweepers. Remember the Sweepers are knocked into Pressure state when hit by lightning magic as well, so you can stun them easily if you still have Thunder on party members.
Go down the ladder to the next catwalk. Before going down the second one, go to the platform at the end to find a chest containing a Bulletproof Vest.
Head down to the lower floor, then go to the reactor to place the bomb.
Escape from the Reactor
Head back over to the ladder, and it will be pulled up before you reach it. After some fanfare, two regular and an Elite Shock Trooper will enter from the door to attack you. The Elites are relatively the same as the regular versions, except with more health and they can also jump onto walls and ceilings to avoid you. They are still very weak to fire, so hit them with it to stagger them.
Sentenced to Death
Instead of letting Shinra do what they want, Barret wants to take out their mech and foil their plan to stop them. Go through the doors into the next room where you’ll have to deal with a number of Security Officers.
Monitor Data
After they’re all dealt with go over to the monitor near Tifa and Barret, then go over to the second one. You need to find a Keycard to access the console to mess with the robot, so to find it go over to the West side of the room and pick it up off a cart.
Go back over and interact with the console again, which allows you to dispose of the M Unit that was going towards the robot. You can pick this up later to use for yourself.
Proceed to the door by the others to continue. In the next room there will be another group of Turrets and Monodrives to deal with, then head up the ramp.
The next room is much like the first, a group of Security officers, then some consoles to sabotage the mech with. After defeating the Soldiers, first go to the North-West corner of the room to grab a Lightning Materia.
You can then find the key card on a cart on the West side of the room. There is only one card, but two consoles, so you only get to pick one of them to Sabotage. You can pick to either remove a set of Big Bomber Shells, which deal huge damage to your party if you get hit, or an AI Programming Core, which makes the robot slower and fires fewer stun attacks at you.
After picking your disposal item, use the console by the door to continue. In the next room there are two more turrets and an Elite Shock Trooper. Before proceeding up the next ramp, look in the South-West corner to find another Reactor Key Card that you can use.
Up the ramp once more into the third room, there are another group of Security Officers. Take them out, then find the keycard on the West side of the room beside Tifa. In this room there are 3 consoles you can pick from, one with each item type. If you picked up the keycard in the prior room you can use it on an extra console in here as well.
Head out and up the ramp. In this room grab the purple chest at the end to get a pair of Sonic Strikers, a new weapon for Tifa.
Up the ramp into one final room with more soldiers. This room has two keycards in it, one on a cart on the East side, then one in the North-East corner on the floor.
Dispose of two items in this room, then proceed out into the hallway. Here there will be two more Elite Shock Troopers to deal with. Proceed forward and then you’ll have one more door to go through. If you didn’t use any key cards Barret will stop you and make sure you want to go ahead without using any, just so you don’t accidentally proceed without.
After going through the door you’ll be back in the armory, and there will be a group of Riot Troopers there to try and stop you. Make sure you Assess the new Elite variants that you won’t have had the opportunity to do so before. These ones have spiked shields, and they will damage you more if you attack them from the front.
Status of the Airbuster
After all enemies are defeated the robot will be lifted away. Go over to the marked console and Tifa will remark about the how your sabotage has affected the robot.
Storm the Gates
After a short time an enemy will break through the nearby wall, called a Cutter. This is basically an improved version of the Sweeper, with large saw blades on it’s front end instead of guns. It still has the same weaknesses though, so hit it with Lightning magic to Pressure and then Stagger it to deal heavy damage.
Head up the now available stairs to the next level. Before going up the second set there is a chest containing an Ether.
Next level up will have a group of Monodrives to take care of, then you can proceed to the exit.
Disable the Emergency Lock
In the next room, you’ll be blocked from progressing and need to take a detour to unlock the door.
Discovery: Waste Recovery
You will also be heading in the direction of the waste material storage you were diverting parts to before, so will stop there on your way to grab some extra items.
In the next room you have to operate levels at the same time to disable locks. Tifa standing in the middle, and you control the direction Barret and Cloud push the levers using + .
After successfully opening the door, use the console just to the side. To get into this door you need to do the same level puzzle again, but this time 4 different times. You can make mistakes in between, it doesn’t require all 4 in a row. Watch the consoles just to the sides of Tifa’s arms to see the direction she is going to push, then you want to actually move the sticks when the arrows are highlighted orange.
1. + 2. +
3. + 4. +
When you successfully complete the fourth unlock the door opens, and obtain the trophy In Lockstep. Head into the room to pick up your disposal items, as well as a Magic UP Materia in the corner of the room. Any AI Programming Cores you chose to remove don’t have combat usage, but can be sold for high value to a vendor. The M-Unit chests will contain 2 Ether, 2 Phoenix Down, and 2 Hi-Potions.
Go back out to the prior room and proceed through the now open door. In the next room is a bench you can rest at, as well as a Vending Machine where you can buy supplies, along with the disc 2. Bombing Mission. If you got them you can sell the AI Programming Cores to this machine for extra Gil, they give 500 each.
When you’re ready, head out the door to the left to proceed to the boss fight.
Boss Fight: Airbuster
Airbuster is a unique boss in FF7 Remake in that you can in some ways determine how difficult the battle will be. After the scene in the Reactor 5 Core, you’ll have to work your way through a number of security rooms before the fight. In these rooms, you can obtain keycards and use them on consoles to remove certain parts of the Airbuster. There’s a choice of three options: M-Units, AI Cores and Big Bomber Shells. The former only grants you items, whereas the AI Cores slows the boss down and limits his stun attaks and removing the bombs reduces the number of times he can use powerful explosives.
Whilst it’s tempting to get the items, they’re actually disappointing and just more of the same items you can pick up everywhere. Who needs one more Ether when you can stop a potentially lethal attack? You get 6 keycards in total, and the first has to be used on an M-Unit, but the other five are left to choice. It’s up to you which you choose, but the Big Bomber Shells can cause far more damage in one hit and the Airbuster’s movement range is fairly limited anyway so it’s perhaps best to get rid of as many Shells as possible.
You should have picked up the best attacking Materia in the game, Elemental, in Chapter 6, so you will now see how effective it is. For this fight, stick it on Barret linked with Thunder as keeping your distance is the best tactic thanks to Airbuster’s propensity to stun those who are in close range. His bullets will do more damage and increase the Stagger further.
Since your party is split initially, this works to your advantage. Always switch to the characters who are behind Airbuster as it’ll be concentrating its attacks on the ones in front of him. When it’s occupied with one character, hit it with your strongest Lightning Magic (the more characters with this, the better) until it’s stunned and then wail on it with your strongest ATB abilities like Triple Slash.
The fight gets trickier in the second part; Airbuster will retreat down the gangway and charge up its Tankbuster laser. Don’t try and be a hero now, get out of the way! You’ll almost certainly die if hit by this so just retreat down the sides of the T-shape and use the time to heal or hit him with more Magic. This is where Barret comes into his own, as he can keep targeting Airbuster with his enhanced Elemental attacks and whittling down its health. It will then split off its arms which will fire arcs of electricity at you, so target those individually straight away to stop these attacks and significantly boost the Stagger bar.
Airbuster will continue to use Tankbuster periodically, so just keep an eye out and get out of the way. As long as you dodge this attack or quickly get a Phoenix Down and heal on a dead ally, you can continue using the tried and tested methods from earlier in the fight. Once it’s very low on health, it’ll fire off the Big Bomber attack (if you got rid of as many shells as possible with the keycards, it should only be able to use this once) and likely cause significant damage, so make sure you use any ATB remaining to heal. Survive this and finish it off for good.
Hard Difficulty Tips: This time, there’s very little to add on Hard Mode except the obvious fact that Airbuster’s attacks hit harder and both Tankbuster/Big Bomber will almost certainly kill you. Its higher HP will be offset by the fact that you can use Elemental-Lightning on both Cloud and Barret to deal lots of damage quickly. Not only that, but again this fight is at the end of the chapter so if you’ve been wise with your MP you can hammer him with Thundagas to really cause some hurt. Always be mindful of your health and pop a Magnify-Cure if needs be. Barret’s Maximum Fury will easily take out the hands and should be your ATB ability of choice in this fight whenever available and you’re not healing.
After defeating the boss, the chapter will immediately end.
This finishes Chapter 7: A Trap Is Sprung in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Now the mission Budding Bodyguard starts.
