In Search of Hope starts when you complete A Broken World.
Area: Sector 5/6 Slums
Requirement: Complete Chapter 13: A Broken World
Objectives:
- Resolve
- Intel Gathering
- Discovery: Johnny’s Stolen Wallet
- Through the Underground Waterway
- The Hideout
- Recovering the Key
- Fateful Decisions
- For the Reunion
- Over the Wall
Resolve
Cloud wakes up at night, hearing noises coming from outside. Take the left path over to speak to a character depending on earlier story choices.
Intel Gathering
The group heads out to look for a way to get to Aerith. Directly in front of you while you are leaving the house you can pick up a Pedometer Materia. Walking 5000 Steps with this Materia equipped unlocks the AP Up Materia.
Head into town and you’ll see a girl poorly informing the citizens about what happened. The game will now prompt you that there are people around who still need help, and in this chapter, you have access to the final nine sidequests of the game. They are as follows:
- Missing Children (Sector 5 Slums Area – Center District)
- Chocobo Search (Sector 5 Slums Area – Center District)
- Malicious Goons (Sector 6 Slums – Wall Market)
- Wavering Heart (Sector 6 Slums – Wall Market)
- The Power of Music (Sector 6 Slums – Wall Market)
- Secret Medicine (Sector 5 Slums Area – Center District)
- Tomboy Bandit (Sector 5 Slums Area – Sector 5 Undercity Station)
- Corneo’s Secret Stash (Sector 5 Slums Area – Center District)
- Subterranean Menace (Sector 6 Slums – Evergreen Park)
Note that for Corneo’s Secret Stash you can’t get to the third hidden stash until you progress the story a bit and go down to the sewers.
If you want to explore around first, there are a number of new items you can find between the two areas. In the S6-5 Road around in the loop in the middle you can speak to a woman standing by the water to receive disc 7. Turk’s Theme.
In the Wall Market area, you can now get into the areas that were previously blocked by people in Chapter 9. For the first one, go over to the entrance, then North into the dead-end alley. At the North end is a chest that contains a Moogle Medal.
Go out then across the street, then South into another dead-end alley where you can find a chest that contains an Elixer.
Go near the Honeybee Inn and across from its entrance is another alley to squeeze in to. At the end of there is a chest that contains a Sorcerer’s Armlet.
If you head over into the Urban Advancement District, midway town you can find a man standing listening to a gramaphone. Speak to him to receieve disc 24. Wutai.
Discovery: Johnny’s Stolen Wallet
While doing Side Quests during this chapter, after completing Tomboy Bandit, you can head back to Johnny at the Sector 5 Undercity Station area to give him his wallet back.
When you are ready to continue, go up to Corneo’s mansion. Before going to the objective go to the third door on the upper floor first, then continue down the stairs into the underground area. At the bottom of the steps, you can now find a chest that contains an Otherworldly Crystal.
Proceed into the middle door to go into Corneo’s office, then go right through the door leading downstairs. Go into the room at the bottom to find Kotch stuck on the table. Interact with him to let him out, then he runs away and leaves behind a Chakra Materia.
and into his room on the top floor, where you’ll meet up with Leslie. When you’re ready to progress, speak to him to head down into the sewers.
Through the Underground Waterway
Follow Leslie, then he’ll ask you to go ahead and clear out the monsters on the way. The path you follow is basically the same as before, just with minor changes due to things being destroyed and rubble being in the way. You will fight through groups of mostly Sahagins, Blugus, and Scissorclaws on the way. The path will deviate midway, and you will go through the previously locked door with the gold and red logo on it. Past here before you go into the circular tunnel after the short ladder you can find a chest that contains an Ether.
After the circular tunnel, you’ll be in the rooms where you had to turn the power on to drain the water. Continue forward and you’ll reach the Trunkway and meet back up with Leslie.
The Hideout
Continue forward into the next area and you’ll need to clear out the group of Scissorclaws, then open the door so Leslie goes ahead. Before continuing there is a bench to rest at, and a vending machine that sells disc 13. The Chase.
When you’re ready to continue, go into the tunnel where Leslie is.
Recovering the Key
A baby Abzu knocks Leslie down and steals the key to the door, and you now have to chase it down. You’ll have to clear out a group of Wererats, then just past them there will be a chest on the right that contains 2 Hazardous Material.
In the next hallway there will be a group of three Sahagins to deal with, then follow Leslie up the ladder. In this area instead of following the Abzu under the items in the path, go over the bridge to the other side to find a chest that contains 2 Phoenix Down.
In the next area, you’ll be attacked by an Abzu Shoat, though not the one that stole the key. These have a slight weakness to fire, though they cannot be staggered very easily. If they start performing the move Collect they will pick up an item off the ground, then use it to spin in circles attacking you.
Continue into the next area where you’ll have to fight two Abzu Shoats as well as a Blugu. Try to take the Blugu out quickly first so it doesn’t put anyone to sleep, then deal with the two Abzu. Before continuing, go over into the South-West corner of this room to pick up a Poison Materia.
Go through the door to the next room and you’ll have to deal with another pair of Abzu Shoats along with a Sahagin, then the room after two Scissorclaws and a single Abzu Shoat. Pick up the chest here to get 2 Mega-Potions.
Drop down to the next area to deal with two Blugu, and one each of Scissorclaw and Sahagin. Before going through the next door look on the left to find a chest that contains an Ether.
Continue chasing the Abzu, and you will finally corner it in a room. This one is a special named enemy called Mischievous Shoat and has more health than the prior ones, though you deal with it in relatively the same way as the others. During the fight it will summon other Abzu Shoats into the room as well, so you’ll need to deal with more than one at a time.
Fateful Decisions
You recover the item from the Shoat, then head out the door near Leslie. In the next room, there is a switch you can pull which drains the water in the prior area. If you were doing all the side quests you want to run back and down the side of the tunnel Cloud went when trying to catch the Shoat. At the end is one of the doors leading to one of Corneo’s Stashes. Make sure you heal before going into the room because you have to deal with a group of Sahagins inside.
On the way back in the corner before you turn back to the main tunnel there is a chest to open, which contains Protective Boots.
Go back to the room where the switch was and head up the ladder. Follow Leslie to get back to the door to Corneo’s hideout. Leslie says to wait outside, but you can immediately follow him through the door. Make sure to rest at the bench before continuing through the second.
Boss Fight: Abzu & Shoats
This fight is almost exactly the same as the previous Abzu encounter, so employ the same strategies as before. The only difference this time is that Abzu will bring in Abzu Shoats with him and use Backwater Blast far more frequently. It’s still easy to dodge so be mindful of it and continue with the Fire-based assault (he is weak to fire). Don’t forget Ifrit! Take out the Shoats ASAP as they can be annoying and make targeting difficult. Triple Slash is the best way of dealing with them.
Hard Difficulty Tips: Same as before. Employ Elemental Materia linked with Fire Materia on weapons and keep an eye on healing and this will be a breeze. Blast it with Fire Magic and when your Limit Breaks and Summon are charged unleash those for heavy damage. Equip Star Pendant Accessory to be immune to its poison attacks.
For the Reunion
After the Abzu is defeated, go through the door out of the room. Interact with the ladder to head back to the surface.
Over the Wall
Leslie gives you a pretty explicit warning that this is the point of no return for the chapter, so now is the time to do anything else you need to before continuing. At the gate exit you just came out of, turn around and go back down the path to find a chest that contains 3 Moogle Medals. If you need to go back into the sewer you can do so using the door behind this as well.
When you are ready to proceed, go down the path to the end of the Urban Advancement District. At this point, if you completed all prior side quests through the game you can find a letter on the ground. When picked up you receive Letter from the Guardian Angel, an Elemental Materia, as well as the trophy Divine Gratitude.
When you’re ready, walk to the end of the path and respond “yes” to Barret to continue.
This finishes Chapter 14: In Search of Hope in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Now the mission The Day Midgar Stood Still starts.

Omg I missed the letter and second elemental materia!! Anyway going back before end of game?
PowerPyx says
Unfortunately, no. You can only go back after the story via Chapter Select.
InsaneCaterpilla says
You can get the otherworldly crystal on your first visit to Corneo’s mansion, you just interact with the rug and it moves the bookcase hiding the secret passage.
Ai says
Will I need to redo the chapter 14 sidequests again to get the Angel letter or can I simply complete the main story to get back to the end of the chapter and pick up the elemental materia?
PowerPyx says
You need to redo Chapter 14 quests.
PJ says

DennissDH says
When i was in the open air again, i get the message to go back to the person who gave me the Corneo’s stash mission…. I accept that and was transported there… is there any way i can go back for the letter?
EhronW says
The letter is after that. When you head back towards the wall to continue the story, it will be on the ground as you approach the wall.
Innsmouth says
Please add to this guide that the track “Stand Up” is given by an NPC found in an alcove directly beside the Honeybee Inn entrance.
Innsmouth says
In addition, “Good Night, Until Tomorrow” is given by the old guy inside the hotel/inn, standing at the corner adjacent to the reception desk
PowerPyx says
They are mandatory objectives in Side Quest “The Power of Music” which is already linked here in the guide (has been in the guide from the beginning).

Section: Recovering the Key
After the room with the ether chest, you follow the Shoat downstairs and around the corner, where you send Tifa and Barret to the right. The Shoat dances on top of the railing. As you approach, he runs back, between you, up the middle. Before you follow, continue forward to corner to open a chest that contains Protective Boots.
