Through the Rubble
You start the chapter in the rubble in Sector 6 Slums. Go forward through the crevice to find Tifa. Push the wall to reach Barret in the next area.
Words of Hope
Barret is now in your party, and you can now continue through the rubble towards Wall Market. When you reach it continue through and head towards Sector 5, then towards Aerith’s house. When you reach her head upstairs with Barret to see Marlene.
Checking on Friends
After speaking with Aerith’s mother, you are meant to head back to Sector 7. Before doing that though, go up to the room Marlene is in. In here you can find a chest, which contains a Mythical Amulet.
After that head out of the house and follow the objective towards Sector 7.
Onward to Sector 7
Head along the path and go through the collapsed tunnel you went through with Aerith before. You’ll have to fight monsters on the way through, but not mess with any robot arms. After squeezing through the passage to take the side tunnel there is a chest directly in front, which contains a Mega-Potion.
In the next area you’ll find a new type of Gorger, called a Ringmaw. These are weak to ice and will cast healing on themselves as well as become stronger during the battle.
Immediately after you’ll find another new type of monster, called a Varghidpolis. Also weak to ice, once you get the ability to learn enemy skills you can return and learn one from them.
Continue following the path, defeating the next group of monsters. Ahead in the large open area you’ll find a Smogger and a Sweeper Prototype hanging around that you need to deal with. Climb down the ladder after them to enter the next area. Before continue towards the objective go into the hallway off to the side to find a chest that contains a Heavy-Duty Bracer.
Continue through the tunnel and you’ll need to deal with groups of Bandits along the way. At the second group double back along the path to the right, where at the end you can find a chest that contains an Ether.
Continue and you’ll run into the named Bandit trio again, along with their large friend who you would have fought with them during a side quest back in Chapter 7. After dealing with them before climbing the next ladder there is a chest on the left that contains an Orb of Gravity.
Up the ladder you’ll find another group of Ringmaws, then will be back in the room with the two robot arms. Continue up the ladder and you’ll reach the playground area and meet up with some Sector 7 escapees. If you speak to the item vendor you can buy disc 15. On Our Way from him, then if you speak to the weapons vendor you can now buy another weapon for Barret named Big Bertha.
When you’re ready to continue, go into the underground passage under the playground structure.
Crawling to the Surface
Follow Barret forward through the tunnel, then up the ladder at the end to reach the Sector 7 Slums.
Home is Where the Heart Is
Follow Barret forward into the area, then follow the cat after pushing down the barrier.
In Solitude
After falling you will be playing as Barret who has been separated from the others. Shoot the rocks blocking your way to progress, then you will ruin into a new insect monster named a Bugaboo.
Note that this whole hallway is full of Shinra crates which you can shoot down to potentially obtain consumables or Moogle Medals, so take them out as you progress.
Continue forward and deal with a group of Wererats, then another group of Bugaboos. After the group of Bugaboos you are meant to destroy the wall and head South to continue but first, go to the end of the hallway where there is another wall you can destroy. Behind it is a chest that contains 2,000 gil.
After squeezing through the gap you will be attacked with two Bloodhounds. After climbing the ladder turn to the left where there will be two Bugaboos, then you can shoot the crane to drop a section of the walkway, which lets you get to a chest containing 2 Mega-Potions.
Continue up the ladder into the next hallway. Go North first and break the wall to reach another chest, which contains a Healing Carcanet.
Go South around the hallway, then at the end you shoot the fan to progress behind it, then continue through the next hallway.
Reunite with Tifa
In the next area you see Tifa across the walkways dealing with a bunch of bugs. Head up the stairs, then shoot the crane to drop the items it’s holding, which burns up the bugs allowing you to get past. Follow the path around and meet up with Tifa and help her deal with the bugs.
Finding Wedge
Head up the stairs where there will be three fans you can shoot. Going through the right one leads to some Shrinra boxes, while going through the left one leads to a chest, which contains an Ether.
Go through the middle one to progress, dealing with the two Bloodhounds. Before going up the stairs you can shoot the gates off on the two large cages here. The right one has an Ice Materia inside that you can grab, while the left one has a chest that contains a Turbo Ether.
Continue up the stairs and you will find one more cage you can shoot your way into, which contains a Warding Materia.
Head up the ladder and you’ll need to fight a pair of Monodrives along with a Cutter. Continue forward through two more groups of enemies, then you’ll reach a bench you can rest at, along with a vending machine that sells disc 14. Main Theme of FFVII. You can then squeeze through the door to continue.
In the next room, you will fight a number of enemies called Unknown Entities. These aren’t very strong on their own, but there are a significant number of them all at once. They are all weak to ice attacks, but can’t be interrupted well otherwise.
Once you defeat the first group, a second group will enter the room for you to deal with. After the second group is defeated a third group enters, and Barret says that they need to close to duct to stop them entering the room. You are automatically switched to controlling Tifa, so go over to the staircase and up to the walkway above.
Boss Fight: Failed Experiment
Note: You can steal Poison Materia from this boss (must use Steal Materia to get it).
Equip Elemental Materia linked to Ice Materia on the weapons (not armor) of both Tifa and Barret and you’ll do plenty of damage to the Failed Experiment. This boss likes to use poison attacks in the later part of the fight, it’s good to equip the Star Pendant accessory which makes you immune to Poison.
To begin with, you’ll have to fight a bunch of Unknown Entities but they go down with regular attacks punctuated by Starshower and Maximum Fury. Eventually, Failed Experiment will appear so turn all attention to him and try your best to ignore the other Entities he summons with Rally unless they’re directly on top of you.
Focus on hitting his Appendages with Barret, who is the best character to control during this fight. Use Overcharge and then regular attacks/Maximum Fury until they both break, at which point his heart will be visible. Use this opportunity to hit a few Blizzagas on it and your ice-infused weapons to wreck havoc. Summon Shiva when you can, too.
As his health dwindles, he’ll start picking up Unknown Entities and throwing them at your characters. It’s quite tough to dodge these as Barret isn’t very nimble, but do your best to run from it and keep the pressure on. Keep repeating the cycle of breaking the Appendages and going for the heart to Stagger him and you’ll win in no time. Remember this boss is weak to Ice, so use whatever MP you can spare to cast your strongest ice magic. As soon as your limit breaks are ready, use those too and they’ll deal significant damage.
If he ever uses Plasma Discharge (you can see him gather blue energy and releasing it), get behind one of the containers quick! This move does a ton of damage and he’ll spray balls of energy everywhere, the only way to not get hit by this is to hide behind containers. On Normal and above it’s absolutely crucial you have Revival Materia equipped with each character.
Hard Difficulty Tips: There’s absolutely no difference to this fight on Hard, except he’ll take longer to kill and if you get hit by a thrown Entity you’ll take a lot more damage. Just be mindful of your HP and follow the same strategies as above to win, just make sure to keep on the move so you aren’t swarmed. Using Manawall (from the Barrier Materia) will help keep the damage down from his attacks. Having Revival Materia on both characters is an absolute must, as the boss strikes very hard and you might get knocked out a lot.
Beyond the Fracture
After defeating the Failed Experiment you will be rejoined by Cloud, though still controlling Barret because you need to shoot some more walls. Shoot the one in front then move to the hole to look inside. After a cutscene, you’ll be returned back to the surface out of the lab.
Return
On the surface, you’ll be playing as Barret still, and need to proceed while carrying Wedge out of the area.
This finishes Chapter 13: A Broken World in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Now the mission In Search of Hope starts.

When fighting the named Bandit trio – make sure to stagger the big bandit, and steal from him when he is staggered, you will get a Champions belt which gives you 10%hp and 5 str for an accessory.
Not sure if this was just my game or if this holds true for everyone.
Bruce says
Edit: 10% HP and 5% str. not 5 full points…

Yeah, I assessed him and it tells you you can steal it, I looked to see if others mentioned it
Definitely worth stealing it

Not sure if this is a bug, but I learned “Self-Destruct” enemy skill from Varghidpolis when farming it a bit in this area to try and learn “Apoptosis”. I’m very sure it wasn’t from a Smogger as they don’t respawn. Some sources seem to report this as well. However Self-Destruct was not listed in its skill set under the enemy intel, neither did it explode upon death. So I am not sure what triggered the “skill learnt” message and the skill being added to my materia while killing this monster.
Axel Robles says
It’s the same ability dif name

For the Hard mode fight with the Failed Experiment, I had a much easier time not even bothering with the appendage. It seemed like my DPS was better aimed at the main body itself. Elemental-Ice for both Barret and Tifa worked amazingly so do some Time materias on both to use Haste in getting them ATB gauges filled faster. I used Tifa as my healer/support role seeing as Barret had the ranged advantage here and I wasn’t going to get much of a chance to stagger with her abilities and close-range disadvantages.

Idk if it’s a coincidence, but when running through the Collapsed Expressway I saveded from right before the squeezeway that the mega-potion chest is, reloaded to run thru again and when I squeezed back thru to where the chest is it was yellow again and got mega-potion again.
