Homeward Bound
At the start of the Chapter, you’ll be at the Cosmo Canyon airstrip. You can return here any time you want to leave going forward, and pay Cid to take you to another airstrip. For now, follow Red along the path nearby, following the signs that point toward Cosmo Canyon.
Follow the path to reach the Chocobo Ranch. From here you can complete the activity which will allow you to use Chocobo in the region. Most of the open-world activities are available from the start, but several side quests take you all over the region that aren’t available until later, so it is recommended you complete the story section of this chapter first.
Follow the path left of the Chocobo Ranch, continuing following the Cosmo Canyon signs (this is the only path to actually reach the town currently) until you reach the bridge leading into the town.
Welcome Back, Nanaki
When you reach the town Red runs off on his own and you need to catch up. Start making your way along the path through town in the direction the objective is pointing and up to the second level where all of the shops are located. If you missed any weapons you can buy them here, but if you followed the walkthrough thus far you should already have everything.
Keep following the path upward until you find Red again for a scene.
Pilgrimage
Red runs off again, and you do have the opportunity to explore the town a bit more if you want now, but it is recommended to keep progressing the story immediately. From where you start you can follow the next path east which continues farther upward.
Watcher-to-Be
After a short distance, you’ll be shown Red going up an elevator. Head over there and go up that same elevator to continue.
At the top of the elevator keep following the stairs up to the observatory area.
Gadgets and Gizmos Aplenty
After being introduced to Bugenhagen, you’ll need to head in the observatory and interact with a bunch of items to continue. Walk up to each item and hit to interact with them and have Bugenhagen give you a small bit of info.
Book Backlog
Interact with the stack of books directly in from the entrance on the first floor.
Raw Materia
To the right of the books, interact with the counter full of rocks.
Recordometer
Interact with the machine with the scroll of paper directly left when you enter on the first floor.
Celestial Model
Slightly left from the Raw Materia, interact with the large globe model on the first floor.
Mako Detector
On the second floor, go beside where Bugenhagen will be standing and there is a table with a small device you can interact with.
Current Generator
On the third floor/landing, interact with the large balloon between the stairwells.
Projector
On the second floor, interact with the round device on the floor that will show a projection of Red when you approach.
Telescope
On the top floor, interact with the chair of the big telescope.
Planetary Phonograph
Finally, after interacting with everything else, go back to the second floor where you will be prompted to interact with the Planetary Phonograph after hearing noise from it.
A Planetological Review
Bugenhagen offers a review of planetology for the group, so follow him into the nearby room for a scene.
Higher Learning
After the planetology review, you’ll need to head back down to the lower level of Cosmo Canyon to witness a lecture. Take the path back out of the observatory and toward the elevator. On the way, you’ll be stopped by an assistant and receive the Discovery objective Parting Gift. Follow the assistant nearby to a door, where you can enter a storeroom and obtain several items. Grab the chests along the way to obtain 5 x Moogle Medals, 5,000 Gil, 1 x Cosmotite Ore, 1 x X-potion, and the Crystal Megaphone weapon for Cait Sith.
Guidance
After taking the elevator back down, you’ll be stopped automatically by an assistant who you can follow over to the seminar, and then enter for scene.
The River of Lights
Next, you need to head back to the lower area of the town for the River of Lights ceremony. You can take a short elevator down instead of walking all the way around.
At the ceremony, you can interact with each of the party members for a relationship interaction (aside from Cait again). Make sure to interact with Aerith last, as speaking with her will progress the story.
Sage Advice
After the ceremony, Bugenhagen will come and request your help. Follow him to a spot nearby.
Ready or Not
You are going to help Red participate in a trial, so let Bugenhagen know when you are ready to continue. If you say no you can get prepared in the town, but can’t go off exploring right now.
What Lies Beyond
After agreeing to start, follow inside the tunnel and down the elevator.
Let the Trials Begin
For the trial, you will be playing as Red, with only Barret for backup. There is a rest spot nearby where you can get the two prepared if needed, then start making your way into the cave. Progress into the first room and defeat the Nidhogg enemies, which are similar to Crawlers from earlier in the game. You’ll then be told about Red’s ability to climb walls. Climb the wall you’re shown the tutorial relative to where you can find a chest on the higher platform that contains a Hi-ether.
Keep following the path into the next room where you’ll encounter another new enemy, called a Stringer. These spiderlike enemies are weak to Fire and Lightning, which are the easiest way to pressure and stagger them. When they are dealt with, climb the wall to the northeast, which will allow you to reach the stone structure above. On this structure, you can find a chest that contains a Revival Earrings accessory.
Head into the next large room where there will be some more enemies to deal with. When they’re gone, look for the pillar in the center of the room that you can climb portions of. On the platform halfway up you can find another chest that contains a Mist Mega-potion.
To open the door ahead, climb the lower ledge in the room where there is a rope leading across to the far wall. Interact with the rope to have Red drop a stone slab, opening the path.
Continue into the next room with the hole in the middle, leading below. Across the gap, there is a chest, which you can reach by climbing around the wall to the immediate left. Inside this chest, you can find a Celestial Bangle.
Keep following the path down in this room until you reach the second last floor (you’ve gone too far if you’re with the white illuminated statues). You can run along the wall to reach a chest directly above these statues to obtain a Timeworn Talisman.
At the bottom, head through the path between the statues to continue.
The First Trail
In the next room, you need to find items around the room and bring them back to Bugenhagen for more information. Most items aren’t required but give extra rewards if you bring them over. First, go left of the statue and bring back the first item on the ground to receive an Exquisite Beast Spine.
Go left of the statue and bring back the second item on the ground to receive a Crimsonite Crystal.
Go right from the statue and grab and bring back the item on the ground to receive a Gi Warrior’s Charm accessory.
Climb up the right wall to the platform halfway up and bring back the item to receive a Healing Materia.
Climb up the left wall to the platform hallway up and bring back the item to receive a piece of Baobab Wood.
Climb up the right wall and go to the first platform at the front of the room and bring back the item to obtain the Mystic Collar weapon for Red.
Finally, go up the walls and to the higher level platform at the front of the room, and bring back this glowing item to continue.
After bringing back the last item, you’ll encounter a new enemy called a Gi Lancer. There are a few types of Gi enemies you will encounter as you progress through the area, having similar weaknesses. The Lancers are most easily dealt with by hitting them with Fire or Healing spells (which damage them because they are undead). The Lancers will spin their weapon in front of themself to guard against Barret’s ranged attacks, but you can attack them with Red’s strong attacks while this is occurring.
The Voice Within
After the enemy is dealt with, pick up the glowing statue off the floor and carry it forward into the next area. After defeating the next group of Nidhogg you can go left to the dead end where there are some boxes, along with a chest that contains 5 x Exquisite Beast Hides.
The Ruby Altar
Keep carrying the statue down into the next main room. After the scene, take it and place it in the far left spot.
The Emerald Altar
For the emerald statue, take the path off the right side of the central platform which leads to stairs going down. Climb along the wall leaving Barret behind, then keep hugging the right side through the small room with the pillars where you can find a chest on the ledge that contains a Phoenix Down. You can then go down one more level to find a Fortification Materia by the pool of water.
Go back up and follow the other path into a room with a lit statue, in front of which you can find the emerald statue. Grab this then start heading back, where you will need to deal with another Gi Lancer. Once it is defeated take the statue back up to the main platform and place it in the emerald spot.
The Amber Altar
The amber statue is easy to find, a short distance away from the alter on the same platform. Pick it up and place it in the correct spot.
You can also go up the stairs directly behind the amber altar for a chest that contains a Cosmotite Ore.
To Thine Own Self Be True
Once all four statues are placed the door ahead opens, and you can proceed through. Before heading up the next flight of stairs you can find a chest on the sloped ledge that contains 2 x Giga-potions.
The First Gate
Keep following the path ahead, and you will need to make your way to the first gate. Along the way you will encounter another new enemy, called a Two Face. These spin a possible helpful or harmful buff against you as an attack, during which you can more quickly stagger them to deal with them. Typically outside of the potential positive or negative buff, they aren’t very harmful though, so you can just keep attacking them to take them out.
Keep following the path down to the first gate. Instead of interacting with it, first, turn around in the other direction and look down to the lower platform with a number of enemies. Deal with the enemies in the way and then pick up the purple chest that contains the Calamitous Bazooka weapon for Barret.
Once you’ve grabbed the weapon, go back near the gate and you can pull the chain back all the way to open the gate.
The Second Gate
Head through the gate and you will have more Gi to deal with, including the new enemy the Gi Archer. These are ranged enemies unlike the Lancer, though slightly easier to deal with as they don’t block your attacks. Deal with them then continue down to the platform where after dealing with a couple of Nidhogg you can pull another chain across, extending a bridge you can run across.
On the next platform where there is a wall leading up or the ramp you can find a chest containing 3 x Gold Needles. Continue forward to the next gate, where they time you need to pull the chain and interact with the hook on the right to hold the gate open.
The Third Gate
Through the gate, you’ll encounter your final new Gi enemy, the Gi Sorcerer. These enemies will avoid your attacks unless they are attacking themselves and will revive the other Gi enemies if you defeat them while the Sorcerer is alive. You can deal with them more easily by building ATB off the other Gi enemies first, then using a command on the Sorcerer when it is casting a spell to guarantee damage on it.
Once the Gi are dealt with keep following the path, dealing with the other enemies in the way. There are a few paths to take here, but first, you should climb the wall immediately to the right to the top, where you can find a group of Two Face enemies along with an Empowerment Material.
After grabbing it, go back down and pull the chain on the right to extend another bridge and climb the wall on the other side of the gap.
Now in front of the next gate, this requires more chain pulling. First, pull the obvious one in front all the way, which extends a bridge across from left to right. You can then use this bridge to climb up the wall on the right.
On the upper platform, you can then pull the next chain, which extends another bridge across. You can take this bridge up the other side, where there is a chest that contains 2,600 Gil.
Now go back down where you can make your way to the gate itself. You need to grab a hook off the floor near the let side of the gate, then place it by the pillar on the right. This will allow you to pull and hook the chain, opening the gate.
Head through the gate where there is a rest point, where you should get ready for the boss fight ahead.
Boss Fight: Gi Nattak
- Weaknesses / Status Ailments:
- Lesser Resistances:
- Greater Resistances: Fixed Damage
- Immunities: Proportional Damage, Slow, Petrify, Stone, Morphable Items
- Absorbed Elements: —
- Items Dropped: —
- Rare Items Dropped: —
- Stealable Items: —
- Assess Info: Inflicting enough damage will pressure him. A curse will activate when the soul flames possess a statue (Ruby: Halve HP, Amethyst: Halve MP, Emerald: Deplete ATB, Amber: Shrink Battlefield). Staggering Gi Nattak will also undo the curse. Doom will inflict instant death after a certain amount of time.
For this battle, you only have Red XIII and Barret so it may be harder or easier compared to how often you run them in your main party. Regardless, Gi Nattak is not overly tough. In fact, since Red is quite a heavy damage dealer with his regular attacks (especially if followed by Stardust Ray) and Barret can also use Overcharge and Maximum Fury to inflict heavy damage, you can pressure him quite quickly.
When about a third of his health has gone, Gi Nattak will summon Soul Flames which will float around the battlefield for a while before heading to any of the four soul statues around the arena. These provide a variety of detrimental effects, but you can actually kill them before this happens if you have saved up powerful AoE abilities like Stardust Ray for Red, Smackdown for Barret or their Level 2 Limit Breaks. If you kill the Soul Flames quickly, they’ll never activate the curses and you can continue your assault on Gi Nattak who as previously mentioned, is quick to pressure and thus stagger. Of the curses, halving HP is probably the worst and means you just need to stay on top of healing more. Halving MP isn’t an issue as you should only use Magic to heal as Gi Nattak has no weaknesses, the ATB depletes much slower than you can build it with attacks so isn’t an issue, while shrinking the battlefield isn’t much of a trouble either as his ttacks are fairly easy to dodge. Ultimately, his HP isn’t that high, so this shouldn’t be a long fight.
Hard Tips: Gi Nattak is one of the few bosses who neither has an elemental weakness nor attacks with any elements, so you can finally give those Elemental materias a break. He can be poisoned, so equip a Poison onto either Barret or Red (or both) and immediately poison him twice to envenom him. Whenever two Soul Flames are spawned make sure to kill these immediately, as if they survive they will instakill one character for each Soul Flame still alive. When the big group of Soul Flames are spawned, use abilities like Stardust Ray and Maximum Fury to kill these as quickly as possible, but if you do get cursed Gi Nattak should be near staggering which will remove the curses so it shouldn’t matter if you get cursed.
When his health gets low, Gi Nattak will cast Doom on both Red and Barret, which starts a countdown before inflicting Instant Death on them both. For this reason make sure to equip Safety Bits on both of them, as this will nullify the Instant Death but instead deal heavy damage, so if the timer is going to run out make sure you’re on high HP. To completely avoid dealing with Doom, you can simply save your limit breaks and summon for when he casts it and you should be able to finish him off before the timer hits 0.
The Watcher’s Verdict
With the boss defeated you can head through the open door on the far side of the area.
Undying Wish
Reunited with the rest of the group and playing as Cloud, you can go through the new opening ahead and go to the end of the path.
Interlude: Episode 5
The Vagaries of Fate
Back playing as Zack, follow Biggs as he leads you around through the Sector 5 Slums.
Our Purpose
After the first stop, continue following Biggs.
Home
After Biggs leaves, head back to Aerith’s house nearby.
Village of the Gi
An Unquenchable Thirst
After getting off the boat there is a rest point nearby. You can also find a purple chest to the left of it that contains the Ceremonial Staff weapon for Aerith.
Once you’ve prepared at the rest point, follow Yuffie along the path into the village. As you progress you’ll need to fight more groups of Gi enemies, though you have your normal party to you can deal with them however you link instead of being stuck with just Red and Barret. The only enemies in this section are groups of Gi, so you can trailer your group entirely around which characters you want to use to deal with them. Once you’ve reached the shrine there will be a scene, and you will be back in the cave in Cosmo Canyon.
Looking Up
Start following the path back out of the cave.
A Helping Hand
Before getting too far one of Bugenhagen’s assistants will stop you, and you can follow them down a new side path to reach the elevator leading back up to Cosmo Canyon.
Uninvited Guests
After exiting the cave, you’ll be told about men in black robes who have shown up. You can interact with the nearby guide to quickly travel to the entrance of Cosmo Canyon.
The Wild, Blue Yonder
Now to continue the story, you’re prompted to head to Nibelheim. You do unlock a number of side activities in Cosmo Canyon though, so now is also the best time to start working on the side content for the region if you wish to do so before continuing.

The red megaphone is 1st located in the village in the jungle. If you get into the water from the boat dock and swim to the opposite side there is an opening with the purple chest

Before you get to the first Two Face enemies, there’s a drop down on the left that has a chest with some ether. Also some Nidhogs.
The trial level has some major Lord of the Rings vibes. And Cosmo Canyon is totally fantasy Grand Canyon.

It looks like you can bump into it by going off the side of the main path in the Thy Own Self be True section
