Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Gold Cup or Bust Walkthrough

February 28, 2024 by Archavia 1 Comment

Gold Cup or Bust is a side quest in Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Rebirth. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Gold Cup or Bust Side Mission (Odd Job). It’s also known as Billy’s Request. It requires you to win the Gold Cup chocobo race for Billy.

Gold Cup or Bust becomes available at the Costa del Sol Community Noticeboard in the Corel Region after arriving at Costa del Sol in Chapter 12 and completing “Esoteric Secrets of the Elders” Side Quest.

Side Quest: Gold Cup or Bust
Chapter:
 12
Area:
The Gold Saucer – Chocobo Square (available from Costa del Sol Community Noticeboard)
Quest Giver: Billy
Requirement: Available after arriving at Costa del Sol in Chapter 12 and completing “Esoteric Secrets of the Elders” Side Quest
Reward: Chocoking’s Cape (Accessory), Tifa Relationship Strengthened, 10 Party EXP, Player EXP (scaled to your level)
Mission Info: Hey Cloud, if you’re reading this and I haven’t told you in person yet – we got permission to race in the Gold Cup! It’s a major racing event and a real honor, believe me. When you’re ready to challenge the best of hte best, I’ll be waiting for you in Chocobo Square!

Objectives:

  • Win the Gold Cup

Starting Location: Gold Cup or Bust (Billy’s Request)

You can accept the Odd Job from the Community Noticeboard in Costa del Sol, or you can go directly to the quest giver at Chocobo Square at the Gold Saucer.

Win the Gold Cup

Before you can compete in the Gold Cup, you must get three First-Time Silver Race wins, You will need to complete all of Grade III which contains two Silver Races, then do one from Grade II.

Once you’ve unlocked Gold Cup, you will need to win it. The Gold Cup consists of three races, and you will get points for your position in each race. The racer with the highest point at the end of the third race wins. You can use whichever chocobo and attire you like, but I personally used Piko with the full Treasure Hunter attire. If you complete all the races in Grade II before doing this, you will have the Hyperion attire which is even better.

Your main opponent will be Hyperion, the black chocobo. If you want you can pause the game and Retry the current race. If you win the first two races you should have a six point lead, so you can afford to come 3rd on the last race and still be able to win. However if you want the best result, you will need to win all three races.

Can I ask how I get star mark for this side quest? In the gold cup, should I win all three competitions of gold cup as 1st rank?
