The Last King is the 64th main story quest in Final Fantasy 16 (XVI). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Last King main scenario chapter.
- Starting Location: Reverie, Ash
- Requirement: Complete Footfalls in Ash
- Reward: None
- Quest Info: Torgal at his side, Clive sets out for the ancient spire of Reverie where the ageless king of Ash, Barnabas Tharmr, awaits atop its crown.
Objectives:
- Ascend the tower
- Defeat the echoes
- Ascend the tower
- Slay Barnabas
Ascend the tower
At the start of the main quest, you are inside the tower of Reverie, designed in a similar manner to the Apodytery from earlier in the game. This time you’re just climbing up the tower, so start following the path ahead. At the start of the chapter, you’ll just be fighting mostly Fallen-type enemies, nothing that should give you any trouble. When you reach the room with the first miniboss, a Fallen Guardian, the exit door is to the right side of the room.
After the second elevator, you’ll walk down a short path, then encounter a Purple Bavarois flan enemy. This one uses electrical attacks for magic, so watch out for tracking attacks like the orbs it shoots out of its mouth.
After defeating it go through the next door, then there’s a chest immediately on the right that contains the accessory The Favor of Ice (Ice Age).
Continue along the path, dealing with the next sets of enemies in the rooms ahead. After going up another elevator you will encounter a miniboss, called Soultaker. This boss is effectively the exact same as the prior Undertaker bosses you’ve already fought. They don’t get any new attacks, so fight them the same way you’ve fought the prior ones, avoiding the swings and stomps and get behind them if they perform Spirits Within.
When they are defeated, climb the nearby ledge to continue up the tower.
Keep following the path ahead through the next set of enemies. Before going through the door on the left, there is a chest a little further on the path that contains the accessory The Will of Ice (Mesmerize).
Defeat the echoes
After heading onto another elevator, you’ll have a set of two boss fights one after another. The first boss is the Control Node. This large ball is similar to the smaller Fallen security orbs you’ve fought before, attacking by flying around or shooting lasers.
Most attacks will have fairly obvious wind-ups by moving away from you or sticking out a section before shooting a laser toward you. When it shoots the laser it will swing towards you or upward, so watch for it if starts spinning in your direction and dodge through the laser.
When it splits partially open and starts creating a blue-colored field it will cause damage around itself, so back out of the area quickly to avoid it.
The one named attack it will perform is called Short Circuit, where it will move to the middle of the area and aim a laser at you, then start spinning around with more lasers appearing. Continue dodging around it while this attack is occurring and wait for it to stop before you resume attacking.
At about half health it will start charging a purple attack, which you need to stop. It attacks you during this part by damaging the area around itself, so just back away for a moment when you see it raising into the air, then keep attacking. After this you’ve seen mostly of what it can throw at you, so just keep working down its health. The Control Node has pretty high stagger resistance relative to its health, so you may completely take out its health bar without actually staggering it.
After the Control Node is defeated you will immediately move into the fight against the Aurum Giant. This Giant is basically the same as the Iron Giant you fought earlier in the game (or the hunt target if you’ve done that already). Like the Control Node, it also has a fairly high stagger resistance relative to its health, so you can also take it out before even staggering it. It won’t charge a purple attack like the one from earlier in the game, but it does have one new named attack it can pull out during the second half of the fight called Aetherial Assault Cannon. For this attack it will fire a number of shots into the air, which will come down in the marked spots while it resumes attacking you.
Ascend the tower
After the giant is defeated, you will be on the top of the elevator and can continue up the tower. There are a couple of pickups along the way for consumables, make sure to grab them along the way. Head through the door at the top to continue to the next boss fight.
Slay Barnabas
Now fighting Barnabas, for real this time. In this first section of the fight he’ll use the exact same moves you’ve already seen, so remember most of his attacks have a bit of range, and he’ll use Gungnir and Lord’s Measure. You should be able to stagger him here, so plan your attacks around doing as much damage as you can during the first stagger phase.
After the stagger, he’ll transform into Odin for a short scene. You don’t directly control Ifrit during this fight, you’ll first just have one Cinematic Strike before returning to combat as Clive.
Back on the ground, Barnabas gets a couple of new moves. The first one he’ll likely do immediately is called Blinding Steel. This is sort of like Spirits Within from the Undertaker enemies, where he is going to send a huge beam attack in front of himself, and your best bet is to quickly get behind him, where you can attack him for a bit while he’s still doing the attack animation.
He will also start doing a version of The Lord’s Measure that covers the entire area, so you need to quickly determine where an open spot is and get there to avoid the attack.
He gets a couple of new normal attacks too, in that he’ll now also warp into the air and attack downward toward you, which you can quickly dodge to the side. He will also perform a second attack immediately after the thrust attack he was doing before, so watch for when he is doing follow-ups that you can avoid as well.
At half-health, there will be another scene where he transforms into Odin. This time there is a Cinematic Clash during it, before returning to playing as Clive once more.
Back on the ground, Barnabas will immediately start charging a purple attack like when you fought him previously. This time you can beat it though, so put everything you’ve got into it now to prevent it. He won’t perform any other new attacks yet, just the same ones you saw in the prior phase.
After stopping the charge attack he’ll use Quieting to power up further for the rest of the fight. The main new attacks to watch out here are Great Divide which he will cast first, where he summons the large sword and slams it into the ground in front of him, followed by a large circular swing around himself.
After the second swing he will then immediately use the attack The All-wielder, which is a large beam shot in front of himself again. You can avoid this the same as Blinding Steel, quickly getting behind him, allowing you to hit him while he continues the attack as he doesn’t move.
Other than that he’ll keep doing the same attacks you saw prior for the moment. He’ll chain some more frequently though, such as doing the jump immediately after another attack, or performing The Lord’s Measure and immediately performing Gungnir right after. Keep in mind the smaller platform you’re on, and the damaging area Gungnir leaves behind for about five seconds.
When he’s under a third health, likely after the next stagger, he’ll warp away and transform into Odin off the side of the platform, performing the attack Woden Worhte Weos. Here he will swing he will alternate swinging his sword across the platform horizontally, then vertically two times before returning to the ground. When he swings horizontal you can jump and dodge over it, and when he swings vertically you can avoid this by moving to either side of the platform.
After he comes back down he’ll perform his final new move, called Circle of Malius. He pulls out a second sword and starts spinning like a disc, flying around the platform. He’ll fly towards the platform three times, which you can dodge through or move to the side to avoid.
Watch when he comes back down to the platform as he will perform two more attacks, an area slam, and finally a large swing in front of himself. Wait for him to perform both of these before resuming attacking, where you should then be able to finish him off, completing this main quest.
This finishes The Last King Main Quest in Final Fantasy 16 (XVI).
