Continue to the inner sanctum
At the start of the main quest, you are on the outside of the side. Follow the path ahead dealing with the enemies in your way, then squeeze through the gate.
Slay the behemoth
Your first boss fight of this main quest is against the Behemoth. These large monsters fight somewhat similar to dragons, with their base attacks mostly being lunges or spins that you should be able to dodge through. From the start of the fight it will immediately be using the named attack Comet, where it will summon a pair of comets that hit the ground, sending out a damaging wave that you can jump over or dodge through.
It will likely only do those basic attacks until after the first stagger. After this it will cast Ecliptic Meteor, triggering a cutscene. During this scene, there are two Cinematic Clash actions you have to perform to continue the fight.
After the scene, the next part of the fight starts, and the Behemoth will start performing the rest of its named attacks. The first it will likely do immediately is Maelstrom, where it will summon a large tornado that appears at your position after a few moments. It is fairly easy to get away from, but it blocks a lot of the area and the boss will likely try lunging at you through it, so be ready to dodge an attack coming through.
It will continue casting Comet, but there will now be three strikes instead of two, so watch for the third one. An unnamed attack it will also start doing is after it starts glowing blue, where a number of lightning strikes will hit the ground around you, avoided by staying out of the lit-up spots.
After it gets to around a quarter of health left, it will start casting Meteor. This is similar to Comet, but with a bunch of Meteor strikes at one time, creating a lot of damaging waves. You can quickly dodge through these if they are close together, so try and do that to get out of the area the Meteors are falling.
Once it gets down to very little or no health, it will cast the attack Extinction. This summons one final meteor that hits the ground in the lit-up area. You need to get out of this area as quickly as possible, because if you are inside when the meteor hits it will instantly kill you, requiring you to replay the second part of this fight. When you successfully do the attack does kill the Behemoth automatically though, ending the fight for you regardless of what health they have left.
Continue through the capital
After defeating the Behemoth, you’ll automatically be on the steps leading into the city. Most of the rest of this chapter is a big enemy gauntlet, so get ready to deal with many groups of weak Akashic enemies.
Deal with the first group of enemies, then head down the stairs to the right. Before squeezing through the gate you can open a chest on the left which contains the accessory The Will of Ice (Rime).
Deal with the next group and head through the next gate. Here you can take the path either to the right or the left. Both will end up at the same place and you will basically need to deal with the enemies on the left to continue, but the path on the right has an extra material chest you can grab beside where the path goes back over to the left.
Deal with the enemies and head out into the next area. Here you’ll start encountering some minibosses along with the other enemies, the first being an Akashic Gunnvaldr.
Deal with that group then continue through the gate. After a scene, you’ll encounter a group of Orcs, then continue through to the next area where you’ll have to deal with an Undertaker and a number of thrall enemies.
Deal with them, then go through the door into the castle. Progress through the large circular room, then in the next hallway watch for a room on the right after the first small stairwell. In here you can find a chest that contains the accessory The Will of Light (Satellite).
Continue up through the castle until you end up back outside. After passing through a gate into another large open area you’ll be attacked by an Akashic Coeurl. This one will only do basic attacks unlike the one you fought previously as a boss, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble.
After the group is dealt with continue following the path through the castle. You’ll have to progress through a couple more groups of basic enemies, then can pull the lever beside the big gate to continue.
In the next area, you’ll have one final enemy gauntlet, starting with a pair of Akashic Tognvaldr. Focus on only one of them, the other will likely focus on Joshua, so you aren’t dealing with both at once.
After they are dealt with waves of Akshic and Thrall enemies will start appearing. Deal with them, then eventually an Akashic Warlord will appear. Deal with this final group to continue.
Speak with Joshua
After dealing with the final group of enemies your companions will enter the area. You now have the opportunity to speak with Goetz and stock up your consumables and craft some new items if needed, then you can speak with Joshua to continue.
Find a way out of the darkness
After some scenes, you’ll be in a new area. This is a big story section, so just keep following the linear path ahead while the next part unfolds.
Slay Ultima
Now after all the exposition, you finally get to face Ultima. In this fight Ultima works very similar to the Necrophobe from earlier in the game, focusing heavily on magic attacks, along with a number of pretty heavily telegraphed melee attacks when he does them.
He’ll start the fight immediately casting Neutron Flare, which is an attack he’ll do frequently throughout the fight. This starts out with lasers that appear in a fan in front of him, then flip around to the back, before swinging forward again. For this first part of the fight the easiest way to avoid them is to get in between the first set, then after they flip behind him jump over to the empty space. If you’re quick enough you’ll completely avoid them this way as they don’t fan through the opening behind him.
After that, he’ll start attacking you normally, along with using other magic. Another he’ll frequently do in this first section is cast Graviga, which is an orb that will slowly track you around for a few seconds, before creating a large damaging field in one spot. It’s slow enough to move away from, so it’s better to focus on just staying away from it and avoid whatever else Ultima is doing at the same time and wait for it to disappear.
The third named attack he’ll use in this first section is Mark of the Storm, where a lightning bolt will track your position for a few seconds before striking. Watch for it to flash where it will stop moving, and quickly dodge to the side out of range.
After that, he’ll keep cycling through those magic attacks while tossing in melee. After the first stagger, the fight will go to the second phase, and he’ll start doing new attacks. The first thing he’ll likely do is Event Horizon, which he’ll cast frequently before doing other attacks. This basically replaces Graviga, where he creates a black hole that sucks you toward it for a few seconds. This can make Neutron Flare harder to avoid because it’s sucking you around, so if you can’t get behind Ultima you can either dodge through the lasers or jump over top of them.
The second new attack he’ll start performing is Ricochet, where he throws a bolt toward you that will bounce around a few times. When it bounces it will track toward your current position but then will move straight in the same direction so you can avoid it by just dodging through it and avoiding where it is moving. If he casts this right before Neutron Flare then you can still try to avoid Neutron Flare by jumping behind him.
Once he’s under half health, he’ll progress to the final part of the fight, where he gets a couple of final new attacks. Note that all of these are telegraphed beforehand by the color of the arena, so you can use that to see slightly ahead of what he is doing. The first thing he’ll do with the red area is called Deliverance, which is a string of melee attacks that track toward you. Your best bet to avoid these is to continually back up until he finishes the final attack, which is a ground slam. The attacks don’t give enough time to attack in between, so just focus on avoiding it until he’s done.
The next attack with the purple area is Eternal Darkness, where he will move to one side and summon a number of lasers that blast toward you. If you are quick you can avoid this by moving way outside the area, but it is generally easier to wait for the first two lasers to go off, then dodge toward the middle through the third laser. Between the second and third there is a bit more of a gap between when they fire, which makes the dodge easier.
The last new attack he’ll perform with the blue area is called Frostbolt. This is a basic multiple-area attack, which you can avoid by just staying out of the damage spots that appear. There are a lot of them though, and you have to be quick where you move.
He’ll then continue alternating through those attacks, along with the prior ones through the rest of the fight. Keep putting damage in and you should be able to take him out after the next stagger phase or shortly after.
Return to the hideaway
After quite a few scenes, you’ll be back on the world map and must select the Hideaway to continue to the next main quest.
This finishes Streets of Madness Main Quest in Final Fantasy 16 (XVI).
