- Slay Ultima
Thwart Ultima Prime
After the scenes at the start of the quest, you’ll be in a Cinematic combat section with the three Eikons. You don’t directly control any of them during this section, only have a set of Cinematic QTEs. It proceeds 3 x Strike, 1 x Evasion, 3 x Strike, and finally 1 x Clash to finish this first section.
Enter the core
After the next scenes where you crash land with Joshua, follow the linear path ahead through the hallway.
Slay Ultima
After some more scenes, you’ll now be fighting Ultima once again. This fight is a little different than the prior one, as he uses all new attacks and focuses even more on magic, only really having one melee combo he’ll sometimes throw in, though it’s just as heavily telegraphed as before. The normal attacks to watch out for more are the ranged magic attacks he starts doing, which will typically be a stream of 10+ bolts he’ll shoot in series, and you want to avoid by dodging toward him or sideways.
After a set of normal attacks, he’ll immediately start performing new named attacks. One of the first ones you’ll see is Flare, where he summons a set of firey orbs that rotate while converging on your position. You want to quickly move between two of the orbs and move out of the circle, as they create a large explosion when they converge.
The next named attack he’ll start casting is Holy, where a circular damaging area will appear on the ground, then a number of lanes out the sides. You need to quickly get out of the middle circle then move between two of the lanes to avoid the attack damage.
Keep putting in damage now and he’ll keep rotating through those and his normal attacks. After dealing about a third of his health he’ll change the area to a new arena for the second part of this fight. He’ll now sometimes start creating a long slash on the ground, which causes damage after a few moments. Make sure not to be standing on the blue area.
A new named attack he’ll start performing now is called Ultima. He’ll move toward the center of the arena, then create a damaging orb around himself that increases in size. You need to quickly back away to the edge of the arena to avoid damage.
Another “new” named attack he’ll perform now is Meteor. This functions the same as it did in the Behemoth fight, where a number of meteors hit the ground creating damaging waves you can jump over or dodge through.
The final new attack he’ll perform during this part of the fight is called Smite. He’ll start charging the attack, then warp behind to and trigger a blast. Watch for when he does the warp and try to dodge the attack, because if he hits you you’ll be knocked into the air and he’ll damage you again to knock you down.
After that, you’ve seen all the attacks he’ll do in this section of the fight. Keep putting in damage and you should drain his health bar around or during the stagger phase.
After a scene, you’ll now be fighting as Ifrit. The mechanics here are the same as when you fought Bahamut, where you have access to Lightspeed dodge and will need to use it to continually close in on Ultima as he likes to back away and cast magic attacks. Most of the basic magic and melee attacks are heavily telegraphed the same as while playing as Clive, so focus on dodging them as they come up, and remember you can charge Fireballs while dodging to get extra damage in.
Use Lightspeed to close it after he does attacks and get damage in yourself. Watch for when he starts doing named attacks, as some are similar to how they worked before. He’ll use Smite during this part of the fight as well, which functions the same as before. In this case, you want to just use Wildfire to dash away from him while he is warping, which should avoid the attack easily.
The next named attack he’ll likely perform is Antistrophe, which functions similarly to Smite. He’ll warp away and then towards you while firing a short-distance beam 3 times. You can avoid this by using Wildfire again to dodge directly away from him (towards the screen).
Keep damaging until you get to the first stagger phase, where you’ll want to use a Backdraft combo followed by both Brimstone and Spitflare for the most damage. After the stagger finishes he’ll likely immediately cast The Rapture, which is an area attack similar to Ultima, creating a damaging field outward from himself. Avoid it by quickly using Wildfire and moving quickly away from him.
He’ll also start using Stellar Xyston, which is a pair of beams he rotates around himself. You can dodge through these beams to avoid damage, as he’ll rotate faster than you can move with Wildfire.
Another new attack he’ll use is Aureola, where he casts waves outward from himself. These turn gold like when you fought Bahamut, which is when you want to dodge to avoid them.
Keep attacking until he’s at about half health, then he’ll warp away and start casting a purple attack called Purgatorium. You need to move towards where he is in the blue bubble and attack him to stop it, and you want to use both Brimstone and Spitflare to get as much damage in as you can. To attack you he’ll do the waves like Aureola when you’re farther away, or cast damaging orbs outward from the bubble when you are close. The orbs will appear from the spots that appear on the bubble itself, so you can use those to position yourself and avoid them.
He’ll also project beams around himself like Stellar Xyston, in a circle and in a spinning set of 8. When he does this it’s easiest to hold in one spot and dodge the beams until he finishes, shooting charged fireballs at the bubble to get in extra damage.
After breaking the attack he’ll be staggered, allowing you to get more damage in. For the rest of the fight he’ll largely do the same attacks, one of the new ones you might not have seen is Pulsar (the 8-beam version of Stellar Xyston) best avoided by staying in one spot and dodging through until he’s done.
The final new attack he’ll do is called Dimachairos, where he’ll fire a large beam towards you, then split it in two and rotate it around himself. You can avoid this by using Wildfire to quickly rotate around him, as he’ll stop before moving the beams behind himself.
After defeating him in his Risen form there will be another scene, and you will then be in the final fight. This fight has 3 sections to it, with Ultima using different attacks in each based on the Eikon powers, some similar to what you saw in the earlier boss fights, along with most of the prior basic attacks from the first part of the fight. In this first section, his attacks are based around Garudu, Ramuh, and Titan. Right away he’ll likely cast Fulmen and Fulgur, which is a typical multiple-area attack. This one has a very long time before it occurs and takes up a large area, so you need to be careful as he’ll start attacking you with other attacks while the attack is charging.
For Titan’s move, he will perform Cataclysm, which is three waves of damage around himself in a circle. Quickly back out of the circles to avoid the damage.
For Garuda’s move, he will perform Divine Embrace to try and grab you, along with Euroclydon which is the series of stomps that track toward you, with the large stomp happening at the end. If you have room you can avoid this by just circling around him, or continually backing away if you don’t have space.
After you deal about a quarter of his health (or after the first stagger) there will be a scene with 3 Cinematic Clash actions. Perform all 3 all then the fight will move to the next phase.
Now Ultima will stop using the three prior Eikon moves and start using ones based around Bahamut, Shiva, and Odin. Bahamut’s move is Exaflare, where he will perform two sweeps across the area with a beam that you can dodge through to avoid.
For Shiva’s move, he will perform Boreal Rhapsody, which creates a number of ice shards that fall to the ground over time.
For Odin’s move, he will perform Severance, which is basically the same as The Lord’s Measure but covers almost the entire arena, so you need to find a spot between the lines to avoid the attack.
He’ll then cycle through these attacks until he’s at about half health, where you’ll have another set of 3 Cinematic Clashes before moving to the final phase of the fight. Now he’ll largely return to using his original attacks like Smite, Holy, and Meteor, along with a couple of new ones themed around the Phoenix. The first one he’ll likely cast is Empyrosis, where he will fly up into the air and disappear, then slam down into the ground in the same spot causing a damaging wave. Move away from him when he casts this to give yourself more time to damage the wave.
The next new move he will cast is called Ashes to Ashes, where he will fire a wave of fireballs at you, followed by slamming into the ground. Make sure to keep backing away while he is in the air, and dodge when he starts moving toward the ground.
The final new move he’ll perform during this phase is called Flames of Creation. He’ll go into the air and start charging a large fireball, which will then slowly track toward you. Keep moving around the area until it hits the ground, where it will then suck into the ground and explode. For the next bit of the fight, you will then need to also avoid jets of plame that will appear out of the ground while Ultima is doing other attacks.
After that keep putting in damage, and he’ll keep cycling through most of his prior attacks. Once you get him down to very low health there will be one more Cinematic Clash scene. After it is complete Ultima will have a very small amount of health left, which after dealing you’ll have one more Cinematic Clash to complete the game.
This finishes Of Gods and Men Main Quest in Final Fantasy 16 (XVI) and the main story.
After the credits be sure to stick around for a secret ending cutscene. After this last cutscene you will be asked to create a “Clear Save” in a Manual Slot. Make sure you create this “Clear Save”. You can reload it to be put back before the final boss to still do any side quests and collectibles you have left. Additionally, you can go to Title Screen > New Game+ > load the “Clear Save” to start New Game+ with the data of your first playthrough. You can also select FINAL FANTASY MODE in New Game+, which is a higher difficulty.
For all other Quests refer to Final Fantasy 16 (XVI) Walkthrough.
