Letting Off Steam I is the 45th main story quest in Final Fantasy 16 (XVI), and a subquest of Out of the Shadow. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Letting Off Steam I main scenario chapter.
- Starting Location: The Hideaway
- Requirement: Occurs during Out of the Shadow
- Reward: 500 XP, 500 AP, 800 Gil, 40 Renown, 1 Goblin Coin, 1 Black Blood, 1 Gil Bug
- Quest Info: Mid’s Enterprise wants for a thermal displacement stack, but she is struggling to realize the designs. She asks for Clive’s assistance in crafting the plating that will channel heat away from the mythril engine.
With a little help from Blackthorn, Otto, and Gav, Clive succeeds in sourcing the materials from which the thermal plating can be forged.

Speak with Blackthorne
At the start of this subquest, speak with Blackthorne when you’re ready to head off. You can pick between whether you want to go with Otto or Gav. This is largely superficial, as you will have the same requirement during the quest regardless. This just determines what extra dialogue you get during the quest, so pick which one of the two you’d rather have a heartfelt conversation with.
Make for the river in the south of the Velkroy
You can now warp to the Dalimil Inn, then head out the northeast gate to the desert area. Go to the marked area nearby to meet up with your chosen companion.
Gather stardust 0/5
Now make your way along the very edge of the river toward the marked area. There will be 5 spots you need to interact with to pick up the stardust. You need to be quite near them for them to show up, so you may need to run around a bit.
First pickup right along the river edge.
Second pickup to the left by the rock ledge.
Third pickup right along the river edge near the trees.
Fourth pickup on the ledge directly up from the third pickup.
Fifth pickup near the top of the hill.
Deliver the stardust
With the five pickups in hand, head back near the docks along the river to meet up with your companion again.
Speak with Blackthorne
With the sand picked up, head back to Blackthorne at the Hideaway to complete this subquest.
