Final Fantasy 16 (XVI) How to Craft Ultima Sword

June 25, 2023 by PowerPyx Leave a Comment

Ultima Sword is the best weapon in New Game+ Final Fantasy Mode of Final Fantasy XVI. This guide shows how to get the Ultima Sword Weapon. It’s exclusively available in New Game+ on Final Fantasy difficulty and deals 700 damage. The blueprint for Ultima is visible at the blacksmith from the start of New Game+ but you still need to gather the crafting materials for it: Utterance of Creation, Everdark Reforged, Gotterdammerung Reforged.

Missable Warning: DON’T sell the materials needed to craft Ultima Sword (Everdark Reforged, Gotterdammerung Reforged, Orichalcum, Flawless Darksteel, Flawless Battlehorn, Utterance of Creation). Selling them would lock you out of obtaining Ultima Sword for this playthrough.

Step 1: Start New Game+ to Get Utterance of Creation

After finishing the first playthrough, you will be prompted to create a “clear save”. Do this by saving in a manual slot, this save will have a star-icon on it. Go back to the Title Screen > New Game+ > FINAL FANTASY MODE > Import the clear save.

Upon starting New Game+ in Final Fantasy Mode the “Utterance of Creation” will automatically be added to your inventory. This is 1 of 3 ingredients needed to craft the Ultima Sword. Only two materials left!

Important: Starting New Game+ on a lower difficulty does not give this material, meaning you can’t craft Ultima on “Story Focused” or “Action Focused” difficulty.

Step 2: Defeat Barnabas Main Boss to Craft Everdark Reforged

Finish Main Quest #64: The Last King again in New Game+. This is near the end of the game. Upon defeating Barnabas, who is the main boss in this quest, you will receive the material “Flawless Dark Shard“. Use this at the Blacksmith to craft “Everdark Reforged“. This is the second ingredient for Ultima Sword. So the first two ingredients are automatically story-related.

Step 3: Finish Blacksmith’s Blues IV Side Quest (to Craft Gotterdammerung Reforged)

The third ingredient is “Gotterdammerung Reforged“. Meaning, you will have to craft Gotterdammerung again. The process is the exact same as in the first playthrough. Do the Blacksmith Blues I-IV side quests and then gather the materials to craft Gotterdammerung. All 4 “Blacksmith Blue’s” side quests are still available after the story. They don’t have to be done when they first become available, meaning they aren’t missable.

  1. Blacksmith’s Blues I – becomes available in Main Quest #35: Here Be Monsters, it starts in The Hideaway by talking to August.
  2. Blacksmith’s Blues II – becomes available after finishing Main Quest #47: Letting Off Steam III and talking to Mid, it starts in The Hideaway by reading the letter “About Blackthorne”.
  3. Blacksmith’s Blues III – becomes available after finishing Main Quest #59: Like Father, Like Daughter, it starts in The Hideaway by talking to August.
  4. Blacksmith’s Blues IV – becomes available in Main Quest #62: Across the Narrow, it starts in The Hideaway by talking to August.

Finishing this questline unlocks the Gotterdammerung Reforged Design Draft, which lets you craft the upgraded Gotterdammerung Reforged at the Blacksmith. The first material “Ragnarok” is also awarded for completing this questline.

Step 4: Collect 3 Orichalcum for Gotterdammerung Reforged

You need 3 Orichalcum materials to craft Gotterdammerung. They are dropped by Notorious Marks. Some of the required materials are only available after reaching Main Quest #67: Back to Their Origin. So you will have to advance the story to the end just before the final boss.

Orichalcum Location #1
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Breaker of Worlds / Atlas. Located in Rosaria > Eastpool > Cressidia (east end). Becomes available in Main Quest #44: Out of the Shadow.

Orichalcum Location #2
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Tricephalic Terror / Gorgimera. Located in Dhalmekia > The Velkroy Desert (south-west). Becomes available in Main Quest #62: Across the Narrow.

Orichalcum Location #3
Reward for completing Side Quest Side Quest: Under New Management II. Starts in Sanbreque > Northreach, from Isabelle. Unlocks in Main Quest #67: Back to Their Origin, which is the last main quest before the endboss. Must also have finished Under New Management I side quest from the same quest giver Isabelle.

If you already used some Orichalcum to craft other armor pieces, you can get an extra 2 Orichalcum from completing Side Quest: Duty Undying II & slaying Notorious Mark: Behemoth King.

Step 5: Collect 2 Flawless Darksteel for Gotterdammerung Reforged

Flawless Darksteel Location #1
Dropped by Notorious Mark: Usher to the Underworld / Thanatos. Located in Dhalmekia > The Gilded Path > Titan’s Wake. Becomes available in Main Quest #65: Brotherhood.

Flawless Darksteel Location #2
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Grim Reaper / Prince of Death. Located in Sanbreque > Royal Meadows. Only spawns after completing Side Quest: Under New Management II (becomes available in Main Quest #67: Back to Their Origin, starts in Sanbreque > Northreach, from Isabelle). The first image below shows the quest start, the second image shows the monster’s location after the quest.

Step 6: Collect 1 Flawless Battlehorn for Gotterdammerung Reforged

Flawless Battlehorn Location
Dropped by Notorious Mark: Gobermouch. Located in Waloed > Eistla. Becomes available in Main Quest #65: Brotherhood.

Step 7: Craft Gotterdammerung Reforged at Blacksmith

Return to the blacksmith in The Hideaway and craft Gotterdammerung Reforged.

Step 8: Craft Ultima

Now you have all 3 materials: Utterance of Creation (from starting New Game+), Everdark Reforged (craftable after defeating Barnabas in New Game+), Gotterdammerung Reforged (from crafting Gotterdammerung in New Game+).

With these materials you can craft Ultima at the Blacksmith in The Hideaway.

That’s all there is to crafting Ultima. It deals 700 damage and is the best weapon in the game with the highest damage. You can now equip and use it.
