Gotterdammerung is the best weapon in the first playthrough of Final Fantasy XVI. This guide shows how to get the Gotterdammerung weapon for the Half Past Twilight trophy. It’s crafted at the Blacksmith after completing the “Blacksmith’s Blues” questline and gathering the required materials from Notorious Marks.
Missable Warning: DON’T sell the materials needed to craft Gotterdammerung (Ragnarok, Orichalcum, Darksteel, Primitive Battlehorn). Selling them would lock you out of obtaining Gotterdammerung for this playthrough. If you sold them, you can gather everything again in New Game+.
Step 1: Finish Blacksmith’s Blues IV Side Quest
First, you must complete the Blacksmith’s Blues questline consisting of 4 side quests:
- Blacksmith’s Blues I – becomes available in Main Quest #35: Here Be Monsters, it starts in The Hideaway by talking to August.
- Blacksmith’s Blues II – becomes available after finishing Main Quest #47: Letting Off Steam III and talking to Mid, it starts in The Hideaway by reading the letter “About Blackthorne”.
- Blacksmith’s Blues III – becomes available after finishing Main Quest #59: Like Father, Like Daughter, it starts in The Hideaway by talking to August.
- Blacksmith’s Blues IV – becomes available in Main Quest #62: Across the Narrow, it starts in The Hideaway by talking to August.
Finishing this questline unlocks the Gotterdammerung Design Draft, which lets you craft the Gotterdammerung at the Blacksmith. The first material “Ragnarok” is also awarded for completing this questline. However, we must still collect the remaining materials before we can craft it.
All 4 “Blacksmith Blue’s” quests are still available after the story. They don’t have to be done when they first become available, meaning they aren’t missable.
Step 2: Collect 3 Orichalcum
You need 3 Orichalcum materials to craft Gotterdammerung. They are dropped by Notorious Marks. Some of the required materials are only available after reaching Main Quest #67: Back to Their Origin. So you will have to advance the story a bit further before you can get everything.
Orichalcum Location #1
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Breaker of Worlds / Atlas. Located in Rosaria > Eastpool > Cressidia (east end). Becomes available in Main Quest #44: Out of the Shadow.
Orichalcum Location #2
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Tricephalic Terror / Gorgimera. Located in Dhalmekia > The Velkroy Desert (south-west). Becomes available in Main Quest #62: Across the Narrow.
Orichalcum Location #3
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Masterless Marauder / Behemoth King. Located in Waloed > Vidargraes. Only spawns after completing Side Quest: Nobody’s Tool (available in Main Quest #67: Back to Their Origin, starts in The Hideaway from Dorys). The first image below shows the quest start, the second image shows the monster’s location after the quest.
If you already used some Orichalcum to craft other armor pieces, you can get an extra 2 Orichalcum from completing Side Quest: Duty Undying II & Side Quest: Under New Management II.
Step 3: Collect 2 Darksteel
You also need 2 Darksteel to craft Gotterdammerung, which is another unique material dropped by Notorious Marks.
Darksteel Location #1
Dropped by Notorious Mark: Usher to the Underworld / Thanatos. Located in Dhalmekia > The Gilded Path > Titan’s Wake. Becomes available in Main Quest #65: Brotherhood.
Darksteel Location #2
Dropped by Notorious Mark: The Grim Reaper / Prince of Death. Located in Sanbreque > Royal Meadows. Only spawns after completing Side Quest: Under New Management II (becomes available in Main Quest #67: Back to Their Origin, starts in Sanbreque > Northreach, from Isabelle). The first image below shows the quest start, the second image shows the monster’s location after the quest.
Step 4: Collect 1 Primitive Battlehorn
Lastly, the final ingredient is a Primitive Battlehorn. This also comes from Notorious Mark.
Battlehorn Location
Dropped by Notorious Mark: Gobermouch. Located in Waloed > Eistla. Becomes available in Main Quest #65: Brotherhood.
Step 5: Craft Gotterdammerung at Blacksmith
Now you have all required materials and can return to the Blacksmith in The Hideaway to craft the Gotterdammerung.
Select Gotterdammerung from the crafting list to forge it. This unlocks the Half Past Twilight trophy and you can use the weapon in combat. It’s the best weapon for the first playthrough and deals 375 damage.
An even better weapon “Ultima” is available in New Game+. See How to Craft Ultima Sword.
