Make for Drake’s Breath
At the start of this main quest, you’ll be in the dungeon area at Drake’s Breath. Follow the linear path ahead until you reach the first combat areas. Throughout these first outdoor areas you’ll mostly be fighting Akashic versions of monster enemies, so they’re slightly stronger than normal, but nothing really out of the ordinary.
After the first group of enemies, push through the large gate to continue further, dealing with the few enemies ahead then pushing through the second gate.
In the second combat area, you’ll fight with an Akashic Minotaur. This one doesn’t have any new moves over the ones you’ve fought prior, but it can hit hard, so watch for its attacks while you deal with the other enemies in the area.
After these enemies are dealt with, continue up the path ahead. Before heading through the next gate check the left side of the landing area for a chest that contains the accessory The Breath of Wind (Aerial Blast).
Slay the Akashic morbol
In the next area, you’ll have to fight an Akashic Morbol boss. If you remember the one from the start of the game, this one is very similar. The main new attack it will perform is called Worse Breath, which is will likely perform immediately when you enter the fight. This is basically Bad Breath, but the Morbol will rotate while performing it, so continue moving and try to get directly behind it.
The other newer attack to watch out for isn’t a named one but occurs when the Morbol sticks its legs into the ground. A large number of tentacles will appear around the area, swinging at you as you are near them. You can attack the tentacles, but it’s generally easier to just dodge around as they attack and wait for the Morbol to retract them.
After you get halfway through the fight the Morbol will do the named attacks you saw prior, including Wild Rage. Avoid these attacks until it finishes, and it will sit on the ground giving you a temporary opening to help finish it off.
Make for Drake’s Breath
After the Morbol fight, you’ll be inside the mountain continuing on your way. Deal with the handful of scorpions you encounter first, then wait before progressing. The path splits here, with one up to the left and one through the gate to the right. These both lead to the same location, but if you opt to take the path to the left you can avoid an extra fight with a Salamander miniboss, up to you which direction you want to go.
Continue along the linear path past where there will be a scene crossing a bridge. After dealing with the group of enemies including a couple of Bombs you’ll need to jump off the right edge of the area to progress.
On the next platform, you’ll fight a new type of enemy, a Red Mousse. These slimy blobs can use magic attacks corresponding with their general “element”, so this one can use Firaga to throw balls of fire at you. Deal with it, then make sure to grab the chest location right beside where you found it as it contains the vambrace Mythril Wristlets.
You can then jump down toward the next large platform.
Defeat the flame lizard
You’ll now have the second boss fight of the quest, against the Flame Lizard. This should look familiar, as it is the same sort of fight as Fafnir from early in the game. It has largely the same moveset, with only a couple of new attacks. The first is a named attack named Incense. It will cover its body in fire temporarily, and its attacks will be more powerful temporarily. When it stops it will still be covered in fire, and you can continue attacking it normally.
Another unique attack it will perform is called Firewater. It will spray a jet of fire directly forward from its mouth in a sweeping motion, which you can avoid by quickly moving to its side.
Around the halfway point of the fight it will use an attack called Overdrive, which is basically a combination of Incense and Firewater. It will power up then shoot a series of flame jets, followed by a string of physical attacks. Keep dodging while this is occurring, and wait until the attack stops before you start attacking again.
Make for the Oratory
After the fight, progress off the other side of the platform and up the ladder ahead, then interact with the door at the top.
Make for the Comraich
After the scene, you’ll be further inside the sanctum area. Continue following the path ahead and you will now only be dealing with Ironblood Crusader enemies, who are largely the same as the Imperial Soldier enemies you’ve fought prior. The main notable ones are Ironblood Fanatic minibosses. These are similar to the Imperial Champions with the large heavy swings, but they have a unique named attack called Crea y Cwm. This is a large delay swing with a bit of range, that basically functions like a grab if you are hit by it, dealing a large amount of damage. Try to move backward as soon as you see the attack name and the enemy starts the windup.
Keep following the path ahead, note that when you reach what may look like a dead end that there is a door on the left wall before you small balcony area that contains a chest with Gil.
When you reach the large open area there will be one final group of enemies, including one more Ironblood Fanatic. Deal with them then before heading through the next gate make sure to grab the chest on the left which contains the accessory The Grace of the Inferno (Will-o’-the-Wykes).
Defeat the liquid flame
The final boss for this is the Liquid Flame. This is a pretty speedy boss compared to the other ones of similar size, using mostly two action combos for its unnamed attacks. These are typically either swings with its arms, or sets of stomps are holding one leg in the air for a short period. After each of these sets of moves it typically holds position for a moment, allowing you to get some hits in.
The first named attack you will see if called Fiery Impact. Typically the boss will warp away from you a short distance, then use the attack to close back in on you. It can be avoided by dodging to the side in the same manner you can avoid the stomps. It stays in position for a longer period after this, so make sure to use the opportunity to attack.
The other named attack it will perform in the first part of the fight is Eructation. It will warp away from you, then slam on the ground and a fiery jet will appear from a lit spot on the ground. Get out of the area to avoid damage.
Once it’s at about half health the second part of the fight will start, and it will start doing more attacks. The first, an unnamed one, will temporarily transform into a dragon and breath fire along the ground. You can’t really hit it while this is occurring, so just get out of the way and wait for it to come back down. It will typically perform Firey Impact immediately after, so watch for that move before attacking again.
Once its health is dropped below 1/3, it will perform an attack called Eleventh Hour. This is an extended attack, where it will transform into a series of animals in series. Wait for a moment, then it will transform into a series of four beasts that charge at your from around the edge of the ring. The camera automatically tracks the one that’s charging next, so make sure to dodge to the side.
Next, it transforms into four dragons that will breathe fire on the ground diagonally into the middle of the arena. Try to get between two of the on the side so that they miss you with their breath.
In the final part of the attack, it will generate a large circle around itself, which will explode after a short time. Quickly get out of the circle to avoid damage.
After this, it’s mostly back to normal until the end of the fight. The only other new trick is has is a set of named attacks called Flagrant Wyrm and Flagrant Coeurl. In both these attacks, it transforms into the beasts again and charges at your location in sequence, followed by using Fiery Impact. Dodge these then get damage in after the Fiery Impact while it’s sitting still.
Once the boss is defeated there will be a number of scenes, and you will earn the trophy Legacy, completing this main quest.
This finishes Fire and Ice Main Quest in Final Fantasy 16 (XVI).
