The Sorcerer’s Appraisal is a side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Sorcerer’s Appraisal side mission.
- Starting Location: Checkpoint Rest Town
- Quest Giver: Myrrdin
- Requirement: Complete Seat of the Sovran main quest
- Reward: 11,000 G, 2100 XP, Ares Morpho Robe, Myrddin’s Chronicle (Maister’s teaching)
- Quest Description: Residing in a manor in the checkpoint rest town is Myrddin, a sorcerer of great renown. He is even willing to share the secrets of his art – provided he finds you worthy, that is.
Objectives:
- Gather grimoires for Myrddin
- Bring Myrddin “Let There Be Light”
- Bring Myrddin “Fulminous Shield”
- Bring Myrddin “Nation’s Death Knell”
- Bring Myrddin “Howling Blizzard”
- Bring Myrddin “Towering Earth”
Starting Location: The Sorcerer’s Appraisal
This quest is started by speaking with Myrddin, who is located in the Checkpoint Rest Town at Myrddin’s House.
He won’t speak to you normally and sends you away and locks his door unless you show up wearing the Courtly Tunic and Courtly Breeches, which you are required to obtain for the main quest The Stolen Throne. Once you come to the door wearing these you can enter this house. Speak to him again inside to start this quest.
IMPORTANT: This quest is effectively the same as Spellbound, where you are finding the same list of books for Myrddin’s daughter Trysha. If you want to complete both quests in one playthrough then only give 3 books to Trysha and 3 to Myrddin (there are two copies of Nation’s Death Knell for 6 books total). Alternatively, can you can create forgeries of all the books at Ibrahim’s Scrap Store in Checkpoint Rest Town, then give the forgeries to Myrddin and the real books to Trysha (it’s important you give the real ones to Trysha to get her Maister’s Teachings).
Gather grimoires for Myrddin
Myrddin asks you to find him a list of books before he’ll teach you anything. If you speak to him he’ll give one hint for a book, but not an overall list of hints like is included if you started Spellbound with Trysha.
Bring Myrddin “Let There Be Light”
Let There Be Light is located in the upstairs room of Myrddin’s house, on the desk.
Bring Myrddin “Fulminous Shield”
Fulminous Shield can be purchased from the trader Dudley located in Melve where you travel in the main quest In Dragon’s Wake. He is standing near the north entrance to the town. The book base price is 5000 G. Note after you purchase this from him here he will leave this spot, so if you want other items from him purchase them before the grimoire unless you want to track him down in Vernworth later.
Bring Myrddin “Nation’s Death Knell”
Nations Death Knell can be obtained in two locations. The first is from a chest located in the Waterfall Cave dungeon, This is a very large dungeon you can access early in the game, but it would be recommended you wait until you’re around level 20 with some upgraded equipment before going in, as you’ll need to fight two bosses on the way through unless you manage to run past the first one, and then escape from the second one without grabbing any other items. You can enter either the north of south entrances to the cave, then move to the lower right spot on the 1F to reach the spot where you can go to the second floor. On 2F you can find a large room with a red chest. Opening this chest gives the Nation’s Death Knell and Howling Blizzard grimoires, but also spawns a Wight boss that will attack you.
The second location is from the Ancient Battleground dungeon. This dungeon is located northeast of the Checkpoint Rest Town and is a large field with a castle to the north that is counted as the same dungeon map.
Going up the path into the castle on floor 2F you can find a long hallway with a couple of rooms off the side. In the north room (opposite from the locked door) you can find the book sitting on a stone pedestal.
Bring Myrddin “Howling Blizzard”
There are two ways to obtain Howling Blizzard. The first way is to reach the Namless Village location, far east of Verworth. In this village, you can find a woman named Wendy in the house west of the Inn.
She wants the Fulminous Shield grimoire in exchange for Howling Blizzard, but it is not recommended you do this trade if you want to finish this quest earlier in the game.
The recommended way is from the same location where you obtain Nation’s Death Knell, as you will receive a copy from the same chest.
Bring Myrddin “Towering Earth”
Towering Earth can be obtained by speaking to Waldhar, who you are required to rescue from the Vernworth gaol during the main quest The Caged Magistrate. If you didn’t speak with him a second time during the escape or hadn’t picked up this quest before freeing him, you can find him by going back into the underground area in the Slums to The Gracious Hand’s vaults.
After getting at least 3 books return to Myrddin at his house in Checkpoint Rest Town. Give him ONLY 3 books, not all 5 he requested! This is important so that you have enough books remaining to give to Trysha for side quest Spellbound, who wants the same books. Because there are two copies of Nation’s Death Knell you can get 6 books total per playthrough, giving 3 to each person. Otherwise you’d miss out on the Maister’s Teachings from one or the other. If you did Spellbound first and Myrdinn doesn’t give his Maister’s Teaching item “Myrddin’s Chronicle”, try wearing the “Turquoise Ring” Trysha gave you, then rest for a few days and return and he should teach you the spell (for some players it’s not needed to wear the ring, for others it is needed).
This finishes The Sorcerer’s Appraisal side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
For all other Quests refer to Dragon’s Dogma 2 Walkthrough.

You only need 3 of these to complete the quest it seems.

This quest can glitch and even using the fancy clothes he will not open the door tried everything but no work, any solve?
Marius says
If you finish Trysha’s quest before Myrrdin’s, wear the ring you get from her when delivering books to him. Or else he won’t teach you..
PowerPyx says
When you say “teach you” do you mean the Maister’s Teaching?
Because I definitely wasn’t wearing the ring and gave Trysha 3 books first. I gave 3 books to Myrddin last and he gave me his Maister’s Teaching regardless. Wearing the ring isn’t needed for that. You can do both in the same playthrough in any order.

Will test as I did Trysha first in first playthrough. Second he wont teach anything because of Trysha. Will test after work with that ring. Hope it works!
Cheers

Apologies for late reply (fell asleep after work). Indeed the wearing the ring allowed me to get the spell. It introduced more dialogue and I had to wait several days while he made his decision, but at least he did teach me in the end.
Hope this helps. Not sure why for some it did not matter. Maybe seperate playthroughs? Not sure about Marius.
Cheers
