Off the Pilfered Path is a side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Off the Pilfered Path side mission.
- Starting Location: Bakbattahl – Gaol Entrance
- Quest Giver: Hugo
- Requirement: Complete Nation of Lambent Flame main quest and Mercy among Thieves side quest
- Reward: 7000 G, White-Leather Kerchief (if Hugo sets off on his own)
- Quest Description: Though he yearns for an honest life, banditry is all that Hugo has ever known. Now freedom is within his grasp, but he knows not what to do with it. Perhaps you can advise him?
Objectives:
- Offer Hugo guidance
Starting Location: Off the Pilfered Path
To start the quest, you will need to head to the entrance to the Bakbattahl Gaol after completing Mercy among Thieves. You can find it by following the path past the Dye Stores to the end where a guard will greet you at the door automatically.
Offer Hugo guidance
Before you can speak to Hugo, you need to speak to the man named Brefft (he calls out to you when you walk past his cell left of Hugo’s). Speak to him at least twice and he’ll reveal both what happened to Hugo’s parents, and where the new Coral Snake hideout is.
You can then go speak to Hugo, you can either tell him what happened to his parents, where he’ll immediately stop talking, or say nothing and then respond to the second question.
You can then speak with Dietrich, who should be standing right by Hugo’s cell, he’ll tell you the Head Gaoler can sometimes let people out.
You can then speak to Ekertt, who is the Beastren who should also be standing nearby. Offer him 1000 G and he says he’ll work on getting Hugo released, but it will take time.
Now while waiting, you could head to the new Coral Snakes hideout located in the Ancient Battleground, which is north of the Checkpoint Rest Town.
If you go into the castle to the north and to the top floor, you can find Lanzo and the rest of the Coral Snakes. You can take them all out here, then return to the gaol. Doing this prevents Hugo from going to try and deal with them, which results in his death and the immediate end of the quest.
When you come back speak to Ekertt again, and pay him another 2500 G to try again to get Hugo released. You can leave and wait, then return and pay him 5000 G this time, and Hugo will finally be released.
Hugo will then hang out outside the gaol, and you can offer to find him somewhere to work. If you’ve completed the side quest Short-Sighted Ambition with the negative outcome (give Isaac the real book) he will leave the shop, then you can tell Hugo to start working there, which completes the quest.
If you don’t complete the quest until you enter the Unmoored World, Hugo will still be at the gaol, but you can speak to him and the option will change and he sets off on his own, which completes the quest if you weren’t able to meet one of the other job suggestion requirements.
This finishes the Off the Pilfered Path side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Adam says
If you do whilimena questline you can send him to the brothol to become a prostitute supposedly
Kaido says
A bodyguard not a prostitute. If you talk to the lady “prostitute” outside the establishment, she would tell you that after Whilimena disappeared.. many thugs keep making ruckus in the establishment.. and they wish they could have a bodyguard to deal with it.

It is not true, in my run Hugo escaped and went to the Coral Snakes in the Ancient Battlefield. I went to the quest marquer, killed Lanzo and then Hugo appeared.
